      I think Richard Hawthorne endorses this same expression, but he also said the DL is technically a push...which I don't know if I agree with.

    The visual example with bands not only helped me understand the "intention" of a good deadlift form, but also understand another cue someone said that I never really understood. Thank you a lot for that!

  • @cmazzeno
    @cmazzeno 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damn, those bands as an example to push the world away was so creative and it looked exactly like a deadlift if only a little unstable. Thanks for risking your life to show us that example!

    This was great advice delivered in a very comprehensible way. Now to actually apply it in the gym! I'm definitely guilty of overthinking my deadlift (all of 3 of the big lefts actually to be truthful but deadlift the most) and seeing it go to complete shit.

I get worried when I go heavier and try to use my belt. Soon as I deadlift with my belt, I feel a twinge in my lower back. I take the belt off with same weight, no twinge. Any ideas? Belt is tight, my breathing and bracing sucks.

    Brian great video as always man; keep up the great work :) you're one of the few fitness TH-camrs that are no bullshit. I got a question about my dead-lift and i feel like not knowing the answer is holding me back. When i position myself for the dead lift i do a body weight Romanian DL sit back and my hips are not too high and not too low. The thing is that I don't know if the bar is suppose to slide up my shins when i pull the weight, or come VERY close to my shins on the way up. years ago I heard Mark Rippetoe say that the bar should stay as close to your body as possible so that makes me think that it should slide up your shins, but then when I started doing the stronglifts 5x5 the guy said that the bar shouldn't touch your shins. I'm just confused. again, my hips are good: not too high (stiff legged DL), and not too low (squatting the weight) they're in between. that range.

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would probably need to see a video but I can tell you that I keep the bar against my shins. I hope that points you in the right direction!

      I don't think he is advising to do it. Just showed it as an example so you get the que.

      Absolutely right! DON"T do that, you will end up falling on your head! i was just showing that to illustrate the cue of "pushing the world away"

    Hey Brian, do you have any cues or advice which would be especially useful for a taller lifter such as myself with the deadlift? (6ft5) Also great video once again, I'm really going to try and give the 'push the world away from you' cue ingrained in my head.

      Sure man, watch some of the top powerlifters and Strongmen, many of they are 6'5" and taller. they change their set-p a little bit for it but you have the best Guys in the world to imitate. Watch, imitate and learn

    Great video man. I have a question for you. In my set up for the deadlift, I get into a position i feel comfortable in but when I review the video my hips are way too high(looks like a stiff leg DL). When I go back and push myself down into the bar to the point it feels like I am ridiculously too low, the set up looks perfect on film. Is there any reason for this, like poor hip mobility to be able to get down into the bar? Everyone always talks about deadlift set up, but no one ever talks about this. I am a short guy with a pretty broad chest/shoulders and short arms, so I think that's why I am having trouble.

      I don't think there is a "perfect" deadlift that works for everyone, or even most people. Due to different bone lengths of the legs, arms and torso everyone is going to be different. It is perfectly fine to have your hips high if that is how you are built. Don't try to force your body into positions that look like someone else's or you will not be using the leverages that are right for you. My hips are pretty high when i pull as well because I have those short arms also. It's just going to be different than other people's. It doesn't make it wrong, use the strengths you have been given. i hope that helps clarify things man!

    hey Brian what are your thoughts on running smolov jr for overhead press? it's really lagging compared to my other lifts I've tried bands chains changing my grip but I've been stuck at 185lbs for 5 months :/

      Keep in mind that the Smolov programs are designed for geared users. They are very effective, but like I learned the hard way, space out the sessions for recovery if you're going au natural.

      Yea man, i don't know much about them to be honestly. I have never tried one. But you gotta treat your body like a lab rat and figure out what works and what doesn't after a fair run at the program. it may be the best ....or worst thing you have ever done, but you would never know if you don't try. People said i couldn't run conjugate because i am not on drugs...But nothing has worked better for me in all of my years of lifting...i never would have known if I didn't try

    I'm really slow off the floor. Like once I get it above the first 6 inches, everything is fine. Explosive. Hips coming through on time. Etc. But that very first part is so rough. Any ideas on how to help that?

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's your set up and leg drive man. Watch the set-p video again nd work those things. Then try to wedge yourself between the bar and the floor hen you pull out the slack. Then push the world away, it should help!

    Hi Brian. I am looking to start seriously training with a competition mindset. This will be my first comp and my dead is in the 500 lb range right now, probably higher in the next couple weeks. My question is if it would be beneficial to train my deadlift on a stiff or squat bar rather than a traditional dead bar. Would this make it so when competition day rolls around and I make an attempt on the flex bar, it would feel surprisingly easier, or would this just make competition day feel unfamiliar and ultimately more difficult? Love the channel, thanks.

      It depends if you are training fro a powerlifting meet or a Strongman Show. If it is the latter then they may be using a Deadlift bar or an axle. And axle doest flex whatsoever so i would be prepared for that. If your comp has a deadlift bar, it takes a few pulls to get used to the whip. For some people this actually makes them lift less the first time they use it. It is a little bit different animal. Which kind of contest is it?

      +Brian Alsruhe haven't signed up yet, I am deciding between 2 strongman shows here in Alberta. Will just keep training my deads with both stiffer or axel bars as well as actual deadlift bars. Thanks for the input love the channel.

    For someone who isn't as well-conditioned as you are, wouldn't doing explosive movements to work up a sweat make me more tired before I start my deadlift, bench or squat workout for the day?

    • @BrianAlsruheOfficial
      @BrianAlsruheOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. this si the same reason why you see fighters walking into the ring completely soaked with sweat. Work before the real work primes you and makes you better. It works for every single on of my athletes
