In Motor Trend, the Rav4 Hybrid ran 0-60 in 76. and scored over 36 MPG in overall driving. You can get a well-equipped Rav4 Hybrid XLE AWD for under $30k
My wife has a 2015 Rogue and love's it. The closeness to the center console drives me crazy. My knee is cramped and gets sore when I am driving and feeling cramped. Good unless your 6-2" or larger and need to move the seat back further.
I'm 6-3", got into my friend's Rogue and got out as soon as I got in. It's also one of my pet peeves with so many of the new cars. Toyota has now gone full-tilt stupid on center consoles. You know, I used to have way more knee room in my pre-center-console Celica and Corolla than I do on my Camry, and the new ones are worse. People are ignoring it, but I have developed ankle/tendon issues due to weird twisted position. On top of that, I have to take my right hand off the steering wheel in sharp right turns because of the closeness of the steering wheel to the thigh (leg blocked by center console). This is disconcerting and not safe, and all in the name of providing more room for f*&$ big gulps. I will never in the future buy a car with one of those plastic monstrosities in the middle. If that means I have to completely scratch some brands off my list, so be it. -- And before someone comments 'why don't you move the seat back more?' -- the steering wheel does not extend that far, and you can't have a safe and comfortable driving position.
Zeronorhero Weight has nothing to do with it. I am barely over 200. It's height, and I have fairly long legs for 6-3" (190cm). That's what bites you. Those 4-5 inches make a big difference.
Very good review everything was explained really well , the 2017 Nissan Rogue Hybrid is also pretty nice Nissan seems to step up their game alot in their upcoming vehicles .
Another great review Alex. I hope you are right and this is priced less then the Rav4. I have many video's on my page showing my first 10 months of owning the Rav4 Hybrid. I really like my Rav4 and do not plan on changing cars anytime soon but I like seeing more cuv hybrids.
Around the 1:30 min mark you mentioned that the Rogue is the only vehicle in this segment available with a 3rd row seat. Is the Mitsubishi Outlander in this segment? I only ask because I think it comes with a 3rd row as standard and I didn't see it in the relative size graph so maybe it wasn't considered.
Well of course a brand new CR-V will be better than it's competition that's currently been out since 2014. Then when the new Rogue comes out in a few years, it'll be better than the Honda. It's just how the industry works.
Motor Trend got 0-60 in 7.6 seconds in the Rav4 Hybrid and 36 MPG in their testing This has about 20 HP less, but trades that for a couple of MPG more. This also has less overall cargo room than the Rav4, even though it is bigger Their back seats are about the same size
alex , i like your channel and the reason i happen upon it, is bcos im interested in buying the nissan rouge hybrid. was really fired up after watching your detail review of the car, but, as i did some more research into the car , i realized that nissan has a huge issues with their cvt, causing much problem for their owners and under low millage..should you not let you viewer know about this problem that nissan has with its cvt.? thank-you.
He risks not getting more cars for review if mentioning the issues. Thank you so much for mentioning the results of the research. Foresters have similar issues with their CVT. I exclude most heavy cars with the belt type CVT. It is push belt - design to transfer the forces from one direction. That would mean issues down the line when engine breaking. I am planing to do lots of mountain trips.... Mazda has traditional torque converted auto. Honda, Toyota and M. Outlander have similar eCVT - no gearbox in a traditional sense.
@6:45.... what you mean unlike some hybrids out in the market???? i thought you were comparing the ONLY TWO crossover hybrids in the market?!?! nissan and toyota... fyi, the rav4 hybrid HAS a spare tire!
Raul Trujillo - I know, this guy is constantly shorting the Toyota. Did you hear his pointless whining about the electric AWD? It’s not going to cause any issue if you’re not off roading 🙄, meanwhile, the RAV4 will absolute destroy the Rogue in MPG as a result. RAV 4 gets FAR BETTER MILEAGE. The RAV4 goes 42MPH in full on EV. Rogue tops out at 25MPH, with NO EV MODE. RAV4 drives NOTHING like a Prius. No way this will compete with RAV4 on price. Who is going to buy a USED Nissan HYBRID?
I dunno for some reason hybrid tech seems to sap the life out of regular cars only the more expensive hybrid models seems to have a soul i.e. Tesla , Lexus etc...
+mark williams - You say: "only the more expensive hybrid models seems to have a soul i.e. Tesla , Lexus etc" Except "Tesla" is an electric car NOT a hybrid.
Alex, I think you're exaggerating the benefits of AWD in snow. In practice there's not much difference in cornering or stopping performance at speed. Crawling around in deep snow at low speed is another matter, but something that I rarely need to do here in the great white north.
Eric Aubanel Additionally, 80 HP on one axle at low speed is more than enough to add significant benefit. I'm not sure any real snow traction capability is missing in the Rav4. This is coming from a pretty anti-Toyota guy.
I was thinking the same thing. It seems like 80 hp (close to half the total HP of the car) is more then enough power at lower speeds when driving in snow or any other bad weather. I have not had any issues with my Rav4 Hybrid in the snow in CT.
When you review hybrid vehicles, you shouldn't just reference how much money is saved over time. You should also reference how many miles you can travel on one tank of fuel. It's really important. If I'm driving across Florida for four or five hours, and I don't need to stop, it's a huge convenience. Something I'd pay extra for. Imagine it's midnight or 2:00 a.m. or something and your wife is driving home. Wouldn't you feel better knowing she doesn't have to stop until she gets to your garage?
I'm impressed by the 2nd row recline in this Rogue. The 2018 Honda CR-V didn't do this which makes no sense. No mention of how good the SL Bose speaker system is here. But I'm sure its much better than the CR-V .. I'd choose this 33Mph hybrid over the (supposed) 29mpg non hybrid CR-V. Why did I assume this Rogue has remote start... thats stupid. Anyhow Ill go visit Nissan and see this for myself.
Great Review Alex. I look forward to seeing your full "home turf" review. I have a quick question. I am curious to know the estimated cruising range on a full tank of gas. I have a hybrid car but am considering a cross over.
Is the cargo floor flat or does it have the pretty extreme slant that the rav4 hybrid has? I'd rather the rav4 hybrid in just about all cases but that was a deal breaker for me.
Alex...I hate the placement of my brother's Touareg rear cam/DVD. Itsit very low and is extremely difficult to really use. This one seems the same. Did you notice the easy/difficult use backing up? Also, I wish you would comment on the rear vision more. This car seems to have a poor passenfger rear glance view...a ver important driving requirement.
Alex have you made any assessment on maintenance cost on the hybrid system. Things like how often the battery needs to be replaced and how much will that cost labor and parts. Wondering if that actually offset the fuel savings.
I like the electrical air con. It is over 30 deg cel for min three months where I live. I hope it could work without me being in the car - with some app etc. Similarly like Outlander PHEV has.
Alex, do you know whether the SL model will have a heated steering wheel or not? And can you please elaborate on how the ECO an Sport mode will work with the Hybrid engine.
1. How is the visibility - all around. The reason for asking is that I find CR-V visibility low... Rogue is also better looking. 2. Does anyone has experience with Nissan's CVT? It is belt driven, which worries me since I am planing to use it on road trips in the mountains. There will be a lot of engine breaking.
I have owned the Rav4 Hybrid for 10 months now. I have many videos on it. I average 37 mpg driving 95% back roads. I do not think you will see a lot of fuel savings if you mainly drive on the highway. I am not sure about the Rogue but the Rav4 does not go ev only past 45 mph so it does not go ev only at 70 mpg.
Test drove this. Didn't like it, it was sluggish and felt cheap, ride was also poor. Honda CR-V Ex-L was nice and roomy, similarly felt cheap though and was sluggish. Dash layout was also not very logical. Rav-4 seemed way overpriced for it's quality and power. I liked the Tuscan, Sportage SX, and CX-5 much better.
I liked CX-5 as well. Apparently the trunk is the smallest but should be big enough. Good visibility in CX-5, CR-V has terrible visibility... no Kia in Japan ;(
I don't think we can conclude that the AWD system in the Rogue is better than that of the RAV4's (comparing hybrid to hybrid). At low speeds, when you need AWD the most, the electric motor is producing maximum torque. The rear motor in the RAV4 could very well produce over 100 lb-ft of torque (I couldn't find any published figures but it's not uncommon for a 50-kW motor to generate that amount of torque; the Leaf's motor is rated at 80 kW and 210 lb-ft of torque, for example) If the Rogue's system torque is around 200 lb-ft as you estimated, then the centre differential has to be able transfer over 50% torque to the rear axle match the RAV4's capability. I cannot find any data to support that. Most FWD-based AWD systems are not able to send majority of the torque to the rear axle. In addition, with an independent motor on the rear axle, you can fine tune the front-to-rear torque bias much better than with a mechanical centre clutch. E.g. from a standstill, you could even program the RAV4 to take off like a RWD. To your point, I think a mechanical AWD only becomes advantageous at high speeds when the electric motor runs out of steam.
Apparently the battery in RAV4 is not enough to provide max power for the back engine without the combustion engine kicking in. This means the ICE has to kick in and start moving the front wheels as well to produce enough electrical energy for the back motor. That means the front wheels will spin (let say on ice) before the back axle start moving. Alex explained that on Outlander PHEV video better. I am still thinking RAV4/Harrier (available in Japan where I live) is better option due to eCVT. The belt based CVT scares me - I do a lot of hard downhill engine breaking in the mountains. Apparently Foresters have issues with their belts.
The hybrid gear cluster makes noises when moved around. It felt cheaply made. Was disappointed as was considering Honda better quality than Mazda... there was no noises from interior in CX-5
He literally ripped the trunk floor open in order to access the spare tire! LOL! ... And he didn't even show the rest of it with the sub-woofer system on the way!! too embarrassed to continue!
I'm six years late!! But I'm buying this Alex.
One category this car wins without any doubt. Beauty. This car is beautiful.
Lol
Ugh, get your eyes checked, it’s hideous.
It's a very good looking car. Absolutely.
I like it for a good looking square bum - I like a big trunk. Strangly enough my wife likes it as well.
best reviewer on TH-cam. 100% guaranteed. very detailed as always
You're killing me...! :)
We're thinking to upgrade from a Sentra 2008 to... a RAV4 Hybrid or (now) a Rogue Hybrid.
In Motor Trend, the Rav4 Hybrid ran 0-60 in 76. and scored over 36 MPG in overall driving. You can get a well-equipped Rav4 Hybrid XLE AWD for under $30k
Kia Niro 50mpg.
Talons X - teeny tiny Kia, yeah. You can’t even fit a bike in the niro.
Talons X niro is a hatch back with a fancy cuv badge ~ market hype misrepresentation
Another great review! I think the Rogue is one of the best looking cc's on the market and I'm sure we'll own one :)
This has been the best and most professionally done review of a car I ever saw. I am subscribed.
Making it so tough between this and the RAV4 hybrid
With the toyota you know you are getting rock solid reliability.

@AlexonAutos The Mitsubishi Outlander is a CUV and it has standard 7 seating
Seems like you can't lose with A A+ A A+ SCORES :))

Galaxy That 2017 isn't even out yet. But from looks I guess it does best it. Driving dynamics is still to be tested.
Weakest hybrid imaginable. Truely an outlier. If you want a hybrid, I’d get the Toyota, where they are not the red headed step child of the lineup.

Xtrail and rouge are the same it's just a name difference between countries
Does this have a torque converter, or does it just use the electric motor to get things moving from a stop?
Also, another question about the Rogue Hybrid, Alex. What's its turning circle? I read through a bunch of specs but couldn't find that.
I saw a Kia Niro today at the dealership. it's smaller than a sportage. I don't know if you can place Niro and Rogue in the same category.

John K - yeah, big question. Do you go with the company that has decades of experience and commitment to hybrids, or the latest also ran?
Alex, the second row seats. Do they recline and move fore/aft?
yes sir. I really like that recline feature. The 2018 Honda CR-V does not do either.
Do you really see fuel savings if you manly drive in the hwy 70+mph with either the Rouge or Rav4 Hybrids?

Rogue hybrid vs RAV4 hybrid?

honestly, if they had taken away that horrendous "v" shaped chrome in the front it woulda made the car look so MUCH better.
