    I'm not a yeti guy but they're designed to be "pre-chillled". If you just put ice in it the cooler will absorb the radiant cold given off by the ice. If you threw another bag of ice in after the first batch melted it'd last you a solid week. I have a Siberian Alpha for rafting and my ice last 6-7 days in 90+ degree weather sitting in my raft.

    I modified my igloo a few weeks ago and put it to the test over the 4th ofJuly holiday. I filled it up with ice on Wednesday afternoon of the 3rd and of course added warm drinks. Had a party on the boat on the 4th. Didn’t do anything on the 5th and on Saturday the 6th, went back to the boat and Wholly Cow......... still have 1/3 full of ice and soaking in very cold water. Best tip I ever got on adding the foam to the lid of the cooler. Thank you

  • @jasonsnook8353
    @jasonsnook8353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You don’t need to drill holes in that lid to fill with foam.. On the inside of the lid there is a plug located in the middle. It will easily pop out revealing about a 1/4” hole. When u finish filling with foam, temporarily strap the lid down for a day so it doesn’t warp. When dry put plug back in hole.

    • @johnscura8716
      @johnscura8716 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you do drill a fill hole and/or holes for air to leave as the foam expands those holes should be on the outside surface. Keeps water from soaking into foam.

  • @rebelking7302
    @rebelking7302 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I drilled holes in the bottom of cooler and filled it with foam in a can also, after last year with 100 degree temps in SE TX and let me tell you, my little Igloo out did my buddy's Yeti BIG TIME. So try doin that, I'm sure you'll see a big difference. So recap, fill the lid with foam, and sides of bottom anywhere you hear it hollow. Thanks for video

    I own the 45 yeti and I live in my car out of choice and the yeti has been holding my ice. It’s been 70 degrees outside and more on the car in direct sunlight and it’s been 5 days and the ice is still there keeping my milk and groceries cold. It will probably last me the whole 7 days. A friend told me to insulate it from the outside and it can probably last about 10-15 days. Don’t know if that’s true but I’m gonna test it this Sunday when I go and buy ice. I have this custom made reflectix and I’m gonna wrap it to keep some of the sun from beaming on it and see if it will hold the 15 days but in the car 24/7 has lasted me 7 days. Thanks for the great idea though I might get a smaller igloo cooler and insulate it myself and store it under my seat since my yeti is huge and bulky.

    As long as there's ice the water is going to be the same temperature. if you really want to make it cold add some salt to the ice water, it lowers the freezing temperature of the ice. it will melt it but it will also get colder.

    My thing is....
    I spent a lot of time living from coolers. We camped a lot, growing up, and at a point our electrical went out in our trailer so I have experience with coolers both high-and-low end...
    1) empty excess water 1-2 times a day.
    2) seal everything tightly
    3) Salt the BOTTOM LAYER OF ICE, only Kosher salt *DO NOT USE ANY OTHER SALT.*
    4) Limit the amount of times cooler is opened; if you grab a beer grab 2-4 for everyone... if you need your food grab everything at once dont make 3-4-5 trips to the cooler.

    I bought a lifesaver 55qt cooler from Walmart last week. Filled it with three bags of ice that night. About 50% ice after 5 days sitting in the back of my truck. I had the drain opened up the entire time. Made in America. That’s good enough for me. Looks like the lid is hallow so I’m going to expand foam that shit. 97 bucks.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      weirdfish weirdfish. I'd drill the outside instead, then seal the holes after a month of curing. I'm not sure I'd want spray foam curing and outgassing into my fish or soft foods. I'd also do each of the sides and the bottom (less spray) because Igloo uses just EPS and has gaps.
      I have one of those Igloo water barrels. I may try that.

  • @richardpowell4281
    @richardpowell4281 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    And this was just a basic mod. I have seen people put rubber tape seal around the edge so the Igloo seels tighter. Putting layers of insulation inside to make the walls a bit thicker. So if you fully modded it you may get the same results as the Yeti still at a fraction of the cost. who knows. Nice build!

    Bought a Yeti for our motorcycle competitions. Besides holding the ice for the weekend, I forgot about the cooler and left it in the driveway. I ran it over with my 16 ft enclosed trailer. Totally unharmed. Tiny scratch on the side. If you like to buy something once, get a Yeti. I have had a lot of other coolers that cracked, broke, or otherwise shit the bed before the Yeti. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

    I have a ton of yeti coolers and yeti cooler bags… Got a great deal from my work and the bag is my favorite. The worst thing about a yeti is everyone knows I’m an idiot for spending hundreds of dollars on a damn cooler. I bring my cheap cooler Out most of the time in case someone wants to steal it. The yetis are great in my jeep and in my work truck, only add ice twice per work week in the summer. Don’t like dragging them on job sites or anywhere they will get stolen... cheap coolers for the win. The Dam yeti cups though... Are absolutely fantastic, and no one wants to steal him and share mouth germs... Especially after I’ve been kissing their mamas

    After you foam the lid make some of those ice grenades with salt inside them.... I have not yet foamed my lid but I usually was getting half a day before all the ice was gone.... and now with 4 ice grenades and a flat gel pack on the floor of the cooler. I am now getting two days per bag of ice.... the grenades get soo cold with the salt inside there that the ice forms and freezes to the pvc pipes to make one giant ice stick.

    My Yeti story goes like this. I bought one over ten years ago. Main reason was I never would clean my cheap coolers very well. I’m thinking I will clean out a expensive cooler, cause you know. Why wouldn’t I. Over the years that cooler has had everything from deer to frogs in it. Probably 100k road and boat miles on it. Not sure if it’s the best cooler ever but it stays clean. It’s still the only cooler that has lasted more that one summer. Love your channel btw.

    The only reason I see to get one of those $200 to $300 coolers is if you do a extreme fishing or camping trips where you can't get ice for weeks at a time and you have to rely on what you brought when you started and I'm not doing that any time soon so always go with the cheap cooler for a day or two of fishing or camping and I'm good with that. It does not cost much to make a well insulated cooler. But they sell at an insane premium. I bought a 50 liter yeti rip off from killshot and it does the job. I only have to ice it once for a 4-5 day trip to Florida. It was still almost $200 which is insane but not yeti insane. Also do not forget that a seriously insulated cooler is no fun to lug around. If you are day tripping go with a Coleman or Igloo. You will probably need help lugging a big yeti or Rtic cooler for any distance when empty, let alone once you load it up.

    Use real vanilla extract in HOT water to get rid of that fish stink in your cooler. Igloo has recommended this hack for decades and it works. It got the smell of week old crab and gafftop out of mine.

    Austin, Texas-based Yeti was founded by brothers Roy and Ryan Seiders, two sportsmen who decided to make coolers for the luxury outdoor market rather than for mass discount retailers. In 2012, they sold majority ownership of Yeti to Cortec Group Management Services LLC, a private equity firm.

    Paying for a higher quality cooler is fine for me because I know the handle isn’t going to break off like the igloo coolers are. Also, it’s nice to have a cooler that you can stand on and won’t slide around.

    Put your Igloo in the truck and it'll be there when you get back. Leave the Yeti and it will magically disappear. Poof, $200 gone with the wind! I'm liking the Coleman marine coolers, fully foamed, super tight lid seal, keep ice for days and cheap.

      Rightt! They advertise them stupid yeti cups saying it will hold a cold drink for 6 or 8 or however many hours in 98° tempature! Who in the heck leaves a cold drink for hours in that kind of heat.& yes youre right.who leaves cold beer in a cooler for days! I have a couple of them white igloo coolers for $30-$40.00 that are great.they keep fish on ice & beer at the same time.

    There are a lot of tricks to help lower cost coolers keep things cool. Draining the water will reduce the amount of ice melt. (more important for camping and keeping meat cold) You can add a block of dry ice in the bottom and then add ice on top to help modulate temperature. Some people will add foam insulation to the inside of the cooler which will improve it even further. The ultimate question becomes, how much room do you need versus how long you want it to be cold. If it is just for a day or two at the beach. Add in a LOT of salt to the ice with a good mixing and bury it in the sand.

    I would say the expensive colers are worth it if you use your cooler enough. I'm a truck driver and was using a cheap cooler for a while in the semi for my food and drinks. I then bought a pelican cooler and it very quickly payed for itself. Instead of buying a bag of ice every other day I was only buying bag of ice every 7-10 days, fast forward a couple years of using it and it has more than paid for itself... AND ITS MADE IN AMERICA! hell yea

    If you lived in a super hot state like FL or AL, I could see needing a cooler for the truck 24/7 that had ice cold drinks so you don't die of heat stroke; but for the rest of us in the cold states the 100*F temps only last 60-90 days. I don't think we need to spend that much on a cooler

    An ancient Chinese proverb: "quality only hurts once" I can understand why someone might not want to spend three bills on an ice chest but Yetis' are built though. They will last a lifetime so in the long run, I think they are worth it. The main problem with them is people will steal them.
