Garfield & Friends DVD Differences (Volume 1 vs. Season 1)

- Today, Skiprope Entertainment put out a brand new Garfield & Friends Season 1 DVD set that contains new 4K remastered widescreen transfers of the original series.
This video compares the newer version to the originally released 2004 20th Century Fox Volume 1 box set, which, in doing more research, show the original telecast versions, rather than the edited versions once seen in syndication and on cable networks (although Orson's Farm is the name on the US Acres segments, which was the name outside of the US).
Uh.... I'll just stick with Fox's release of Garfield and Friends. I really don't the stretch 16:9 cropping and the stock artwork they used. Even though, it's gonna be expensive to buy these it will all be worth it for Garfield.

There should be a crime for airing cartoons (60's to 90's) in the wrong aspect ratio.

Wow thanks for doing this review! I'm looking to get all the seasons on DVD off Amazon right now but I wasn't sure which one to get... I grew up with Garfield being an 80s baby, we used to watch it on TV in the early 90s on I think it was Channel 4 here in Canada. We used to record Garfield, Sonic the Hedgehog, Futurama, Simpsons all kinds of stuff on VHS. Would prefer to just get a copy that's in 4:3. Seems to be an issue with a lot of old cartoons that I want to buy on DVD there's a crappy version and there's a good version.
I saw a review on Amazon, and it said that it’s still in 16:9. I do have the 20 Garfield Stories DVD, which is an episode compilation, but with the remastered edition, but I’m just gonna get the original Fox DVDs for the rest of the series.
The good news is that the season 2 release is listed as 4:3 by PBS themselves but still has the "remastered" moniker. I'm not sure what to make of it but I'm getting it to see if the Fox release again or something else. The worst case could be cutting off the sides of 9 Story's remastered 16:9 footage since the vertical portion would be cut off (it's very unlikely but it is a cheap release and hard to imagine it getting the care the original source material deserves).
I think those remastered versions are from syndication. The original CBS broadcast versions were lost. The syndicated version didn't have the "Friends are there" intro for seasons 1 and 2 but the "We're ready to party" one which is why they remade the original intro.
And since they are syndication versions, I don't think "Screaming with Binky" will be included in seasons 2 and 3.
Tubi has the same remasters, and the “Screaming with Binky” segments are included.
Actually I have the season 2 and 3 re release dvds and they do have the "screaming with Binky" segments.

I don't like the cropping in the original Garfield short for the remastered one. My first thought was they might have replaced the original theme with a new song and at least they didn't do that, but the animation doesn't look the same. I'll probably stick with the original releases :)
I tried to get the original release box sets off ebay recently, the box sets came in crushed like the plastic expired and over half the discs were completely shot. When i watched the few that were usable i didn't find the quality to be that great. Even on this video it's obvious the remastered version has a better quality picture.
To me, the remastered version is okay. I’ll give it that at least they manage to restore and enhance the colors, but when it comes to the intro, it can leave a lot to be desired.
In the case of the intro song, I much prefer the original hand drawn animated version over the remastered flash animated one.
To clarify, that’s not to say I hate Flash animation entirely. In fact, if enough effort is put into it, it can deliver some pleasing results. And there are a few shows that do use the medium very well.

It's not remastered. It's mutilated. Remastering means making the picture better, not worse.
Well if you watch Gumby and other classics, it shows the original film but years later when they come on DVD and Blu-Ray it's all remaster by making the colors better in HD style. So it will still have black and white dots but not alot but Gumby has alot of black and white dots because they stay the original films although it's remastered.

Its a shame 9 Story dosent know how to make a good remaster.
This just reminds me of when Funimation does DBZ remasters. They just crop everything to 16:9.

@@VennyRestore except Funi DVNR'd those transfers, these aren't DVNR'd they're just cropped from a fantastic transfer, this is probably the only cropped series that has the least amount of problems imo, Simpsons was DVNR'd and stretched and squashed in scenes, the visuals looked horrible because they used TV masters instead of original films. These have accurate colors and no DVNR or squish and stretching for scenes, sure the intro is appalling but it could look worse like Funi's DBZ or FXX's Simpsons.

I already have the original dvd release. I don't think it's worth double dipping just to have "U.S.Acres" written on the title cards.
Well crap! They cropped it to make it "widescreen". Example the part where Jon is on the phone with Liz. The top part of Jon's head is cut off some. I was really hopeful this new release would be better. But it seems like it's not. I knew Garfield & Friends was never made for widescreen originally and was afraid something like this might happen. Should have just went for the better picture quality and kept it 4:3 full instead of fake 16:9 widescreen. I've been a fan of Garfield since I was a kid too. Thank you so much for this too! : ) I may still get these though. It seems like the picture quality is a bit better too. The Orson's Farm thing happened in the comics version too I believe.

My question is The Remastered versions. Are they going to come out with All 7 seasons? With 121 episodes.
And a question about the other version of the 5 Volumes. Are all the 121 episodes on that set?

On the Fox ones, yes, all 121 episodes are on there.
As far as all 7 seasons coming? One would assume yes but we still need to see if Paramount takes over that or if 9 Story still does
Volume 1 has more episodes because it has season 1 and some of 2

We might get newer releases of the episodes from Paramount Home Entertainment since Nickelodeon bought the rights to the Garfield franchise, except for the two live action movies.

Except that 9Story will still have remastering rights to them still, and transporting the remaining episodes to Paramount. 9Story signed distribution rights to the media, Viacom can’t take that

have you compared episodes, does the new version crop a lot of the picture or how did they do it? I think I will stick to the original release
The picture is cropped a bit but not much that it's distracting, it's like what FX did with The Simpsons a few years back
@@TheReviewingNetwork If you compare it frame by frame, the 9 Story effort is an actual scan of the original film. You do gain more visual real estate on the side, but the top is still cut off. It's a bizarre choice given the effort put into the remaster itself.
@@s.garabet1677 Wait so the show was made for 16:9 at first?? Kinda like how Malcom In The Middle was actually filmed in widescreen but broadcasted in 4:3 full. And yeah I hope we get a fixed proper not cut off version someday. Keep the true widescreen without any cropping.
@@TeamRocketHQR no, it was really meant to be 4:3. Some, not all, frames do have extra details on the side but the top is cropped. It's not the best decision but they are 4K scans of the original film so there's that. Some segments with the quickies, they pan the camera to not obscure the text.
@@s.garabet1677 Why would you crop at all? Just keep the proper aspect ratio even if it's a weird looking one. Or is it so we'll buy a "fixed" version years down the road on bluray? XD And yeah I've noticed that wiht animation cells over the years. There's always or most of the time extra background all around the actual 4:3 cell space. But it's usually never enough for proper widescreen. Thank you for the info too! : )
