I love this, and I am really excited for the "Process" series. TH-cam has plenty of gear reviews, but content that really helps us grow as photographers and see our world and tools in a new way is so much more rare, especially with this level of polish.
Well done, Kyle. It is good to know other photographers. What I liked most was that you stepped away and allowed Nicholas to talk about himself and his work.
excellent video, and i really like Nicholas's work. I love his approach.... goes against 99% of all youtube photographers who go out and come back with loads of 'keepers' or portfolio photographs without no footwork at all, purely to drive clicks....Ansel said you were lucky to get 12 good photos a year... he was right.
I've always thought your documentary style videos are great and this is an excellent example. Nicks voiceover was fascinating and loving the super 8 - very cool.
Thank you for embarking on this exercise. TH-cam is full of access reporting and QVC content, which is fine, but often overshadows the medium of photography. I appreciate the opportunity to discover new craftspeople and learn from their journeys. I love to see photographers exploring the why. You've done an exceptional job crafting this first entry, it is beautifully shot, well paced, and informative. I look forward to more discoveries. Thanks, RMF
Kyle - the production quality on this video (and really on all of your videos!) is award-worthy! Thanks for sharing such great and compelling content, filled with lessons on photography, which you are a master at! Thanks for everything you do, and we wish you the very best in your current set of projects!
Nicholas's work was a massive inspiration to me while I studied at Plymouth with Dartmoor being so close. It is truly great to have content like this to help develop or encourage long term projects and photographic practice. Thanks for always blessing us with such incredible content.
Beautiful little documentary, lovely insights from Nicholas and so many points to take away from for my own image making. Glad you've started that new series, feels like the (shorter) visual twin to your podcast episodes. Also managed to get my hands on a copy of Black Dots, had no idea there was a 2nd run!
I've always thought of Nicholas' approach to photography as fairly pragmatic in comparison to others and I think that really comes through in this charming short doc. Excellent job Kyle!
Excellent video, Kyle. I've been following White's work since I saw Negative Feedback's video on him years ago. You know, it would be extremely interesting to see one of these videos on Mr. Negative Feedback himself, George Muncey. As well as Jack Latham--one of my favorite photographers in the UK. Anyways, excellent video. I can't wait to see more of these!
Beautiful video, I fully agree as a photographer it is tough not to overlook the area you live in as boring (I live in Vancouver, BC). To try and overcome this I take a camera everywhere I go, and if something catches my eye I make a photo, this has helped me to appreciate the beauty of where I live but also as Nicholas said it trains your eyes to be constantly looking for compositions.
A timely video. Same situation near where I live. A lost place and a tasteless dish. Creativity has left this landscape without a trace. Could I cherish the hope that she forgot something there and came back? (good video format)
Beautiful work both from Nicholas' photos and your own documentary skills. I could definitely relate to his rediscovery of Dartmoor, as I've experienced something similar each time I've gone home to Ireland after a decade away. Also taking this production value as a goal to reach for my own series of videos with artists on their process.
Your videos are amazing! I know we all naturally adapt & change our style along the way as our journey progresses, but please keep your current style of videos apparent within your channel, and try not to change them too much! 😉😎 Love your work Kyle & love Nicholas’s work in this video too! 👌🏼
Wonderful video, Kyle. Thanks for taking the time. It saddens me that you can make something like this and it gets steamrolled in views and exposure by a video focused on a camera. You seem to balance both pretty well so props to you.
Thanks, Bryan. I appreciate that. And yeah, I feel ya. I try to focus on the fact that even though videos like this have far less of a reach, they hopefully have a bigger or more meaningful purpose for some people.
Very intresting video...well done! I am an amateur photographer, but I admit that some years ago I thought ok I will go around the world to make pictures in my free time...then I have bought two books, one of Sally Mann, and Landscape of Don McCullin, in which he photographs his surroundings too. There I thought, well Matteo, you can save money and make good photos also here...And why not, document the county where you live in...
Beautiful work from both parties.. and this isn't to diminish either, just an observation... a lot of these classic landscape locations (in Ireland also, where Im from) are are made up of seriously impacted environments. The Dartmoor moorlands are a desert, mostly empty of trees and wildlife. Thats not to say you cant take fantastic photos there (as Nicholas is) but as individuals who spend a lot of time out in these landscapes its something we should really be aware of and put effort into rectifying. In Ireland, visitors (and locals) comment on the beauty of Connemara (on the western seaboard).... denuded hills, with the soil washed away from over grazing by sheep and close to zero tree cover. We dont know what it used to look like so we embrace this new, shifted baseline. While spectacular to photograph, Iceland has the same issue. I feel like if you love to photograph the outdoors and you have some time and energy you should consider contributing to reforestation and re-wilding projects in your location/your native country. Anyway! Beautiful work lads!
That was good stuff Kyle (and Nicholas). I've been thinking recently what sort of photos I could take of my near area.. it'll be a big contrast with what I used to photograph. Videos like this have been good to open up my eyes to different takes on the familiar :) Looking forward to the rest of the series. Are you sticking with landscape photographers?
Kyle, maybe it’s just me, but I think your film making skills from your past career are not letting you down. :) Wonderful work.
I appreciate that, Rick. Thanks!

Thanks. Hoping to make more of these when time allows.
3:08 „Talking about things unfolding within the landscape rather than being the subject the landscape itself“!
Well done, Kyle. It is good to know other photographers. What I liked most was that you stepped away and allowed Nicholas to talk about himself and his work.

I appreciate that, man. Was nice to shoot with the Beaulieu again!
One of my favourite photographers. Carpathia is incredible.

Really appreciate that, Michael. Thank you.
Really appreciate this approach and ethos. Giving time and space to reveal the familiar. Thank you

Cheers, Will. Glad you enjoyed this one.
What a beautiful documentary - such an interesting story in finding subjects to explore in familiar places. Can't wait to see more docs in the series!
Thanks, man. Let's catch up soon.
Fabulous documentry Kyle, love the Super 8 look, so creative - well done.
Thanks. Was nice to shoot some Super 8 again.
Very nice work Kyle. I was wondering when you might revisit this type of documentary style of work. Excited to see more!
absolutely beautiful and just the message / pep talk I needed to get through the gloomy winter
Half way through this and loving it. Beautiful pace of story telling. Thanks Kyle and big up Nicholas!
Amazing, Nicholas's Black dots book is one of my favourites to flick though for inspiration
Great documentary, truly inspiring ! I love his work and yours and the "combination of both" turned out beautiful. More please ! :))
really nice work.
This is so great! Been following Nicholas work for a while, and its amazing. Great documentary! Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you!

excellent short film on Nicholas. love the patience of his work.
Cheers, Pat.

Well done. Thoroughly enjoyable with a great reminder of what can be found in your own backyard if you look with fresh eyes.
so so so good!

This is fantastic- thank you! 🙏

this was so inspirational. thanks for sharing guys!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your podcast and hope you bring it back, but this is fantastic too :)
One day!
Fantastic! What a great documentary.
Still hoping to see you and Steve O'Nions hike Snowdonia one day 😁

Stunning
Thanks, Zach!
Amazing work. Both the photographer and your video.
Thank you.
this was incredible Kyle, as a huge fan of your podcast, this feels like the closest to a visual representation to that. really enjoyed this.
Happy to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful work! Excellent video and glad you’ve introduced me to another amazing photographer.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very impressive visuals and an interesting new take on your podcast idea.
Just wow. All of it.

Excellent documentary - thanks
Amazing documentary, Nicholas's work is so inspiring. I'm very looking forward this new serie of videos. Thanks Kyle!
Thanks, man. Let's catch up soon!
This was really well done.
A fascinating video Kyle - perhaps an ongoing series about inspiring photographers....
That's the plan.
I'm sure this series will be a lot of work but this was fantastic!
Wonderful video, Kyle. Thanks for taking the time.

When I think about Dartmoor, my mind takes me to that image with the green doors in the snow
Great piece - also kudos for the sick colour grading throughout!
🙏
Fab video! ☺
Really loved this video. On a technical note, can anyone identify exactly which f-stop backpack he's using?
Thank you! It's actually a Shimoda Backpack, I believe its the Action X70.
Really enjoyed this Kyle.
Outstanding.

Thanks for the comment. And I appreciate these thoughts. You make some good points. Something to think about in the future.
Excellent video 👌🏽looking forward to more on this
Thanks, man. Gotta catch up soon!
So beautiful.
His portrait really remind me of Laura pannack’s work, both obviously fantastic

Thank you! Hopefully will make some more of these. And won't strictly be limited to just landscape photographers.
I make work near where I live, because I want to make work but don’t much enjoy driving..
my lecturer on the masters used to say, the ordinary is stranger
great photos and super relatable topic
