❓Question of the Day: Do you use an auto focuser on your rig?

To answer your question, all the time Steve. I have 3x ZWO EAF and 1x PLL Senso Sesto 2 I keep my rigs built up so all I have to do is is clip them to the mount, connect the power to the control mini PC and away to go. In my own opinion continuously swapping gear from one rig to another is not only time consuming but increases the risk of problems. I do understand some people might have a budget to do this though. I don't think I need a focuser at the moment, my next buy will probably be some filters.

Thanks Kev, I tend to be the same as you and keep rigs built up on a permanent/semi-permanent basis...especially when imaging here in the UK...time is often of the essence! Lol!

looks like a nice little unit! and it’s nice of them to include a temperature probe too, id be very interested in using this one instead of a ZWO EAF in my future automated rig

Cheers Stewart! Have fun with yours...I hadn't realised that you had a look at the Gen 1 offering too...with the Rose Gen 2 you can do a great comparison vid! :)
Congrats on your Askar 71! I'm looking at the 65PHQ at the moment, they seem to be knocking the scopes out at the moment! Lol!
Have a great week mate and thanks for tuning in! :)

Looks like an amazing small bit of kit.
Do you know if there is support for Alpaca? Speed and backlash is very interesting to see, specially backlash as that is a potential dealbreaker.
    Cheers!

Not sure on the Alpaca support, but will certainly check with them and cover in my next video mate, no worries!
Thanks for tuning in and have a great weekend! :)

The focuser software doesn't Alpaca. Regarding backlash, the focuser doesn't use flexible couplings. Instead gears are used and the rigid components can provide excellent backlash compensation performance. Normally we use overshoot backlash compensation method so the amount of backlash is not a key factor.

@@astroasis2020 Thank you for the answer, I believe Alpaca might be something to look into in upcoming versions.
I have measured my focusers regarding backlash, and the smaller, the better. Gears have backlash and more gears = more backlash. Flex couplings are not the main issue when i measured. (I measured with calibrated gauges scaling sub 1/100th mm)
I am at 4/100th which is 40 steps roughly, software compensated. That includes my feathertouch 3515)

£299 lol? The clutch is nice but a Gemini eaf cost £60 (no clutch)

Is it really £300? Wow good luck selling that

I noticed some stores sell this product at a price of around £300, and some stores sell at a lower price than £300. The focuser suit includes external temperature probe already. Users don't need to buy additional hand controller because they can use mobile phone to control the focuser over Bluetooth when capturing solar system objects or visual observing.
Before we start designing the focuser, I noticed many amateur astrophotographer bought several electronic focusers, one focuser for one telescope. Because it is not a easy work to install or uninstall those focusers on a telescope. It is not easy to share one focuser between different telescopes. Normally we don't need to buy each camera for each telescope. We don't need to buy each filter wheel for each telescope. So one of the design goal of Oasis focuser is to make it easy to be shared between different telescopes. In some cases we only need to loosen/tighten one screw on the clamp to move the Oasis focuser body from one telescope to another telescope. In some cases we need to loosen/tighten 4 screws on the clamp to move the Oasis focuser body from one telescope to another telescope. Those screws are easy to be operated. I belive in all cases we can move Oasis Focuser body from one telescope to another telescope in one or two minutes. This means Oasis focuser can be easily shared between different telescopes and users need less electronic focusers. This saves money for users eventually :)
Besides, we provide around $30 USD discount for users who help measure or verify the installation for a telescope model on which Oasis focuser is never installed, if they order from our AliExpress store.
