amongst a road full of petrol cars it's lovely to hear the clippty clopp of a horse jogging up the street and a pleasure to listen to you're knowledge of the animal
The clip in the beginning really shows how confident and happy Cloud is while doing his job. I notice when you pulled over Cloud's ears were always back, listening to Dad I suppose. Only when he started walking did his ears turn forward again. I find watching working animals who know their job and does it well, fascinating to watch. Cloud is a very impressive boy.
Good point, I see where they could get used to following a leader. Really appreciate how courteous the drivers of vehicles are there. No one slows down on the roads for us here in the rural area I live in here in the US.
Ah, shame nobody slows down for you. Most people in our area are very used to seeing us out and about, we are fortunate even those just passing through tend to be courteous. There is quite a lot of information on how to safely pass horses over here in the UK and we find it's quite rare to have a negative experience. If we do, we just put it down to all good training for the horses!
I noticed some 'for sale' signs and I so very much want to buy one (and move to a completely different country) JUST so I can sit on the porch and see you guys trot on by. Their hoof beats and your voice is so soothing. Also...when driving a unicorn hitch, is it possible to tell the front horse where you want them to be? I notice Cloud kind of wanders left to right and is just doing his thing. Actually, is it possible to communicate with each horse individually in this kind of setup? I apologize for the silly questions, I'm not a horse person, just a horse lover!
Regarding newly resurfaced roads, I wonder if they feel so at home and relaxed on that particular surface, because the FEEL reminds them of when they were youngsters and the feeling on their hooves was an echo of when their little hooves were new and ? Softer… or/and maybe the SOUND is a gentler frequency and vibration that puts them instantly as ease, like a humming lullaby does to us… I remember my little pony Darky really chilling down and relaxing clip clopping on the soft chalk Downs’ paths. It had a muted feel and a softness like caulk … just the happiest memories when mixed with heavy honey bumble bees in a clover field with the sent of freshly torn clover as Darky tore up bunches of sweet leaves and stems under the hot summers sun…. Your commentary always drips with precious little gems and nougats of wisdom….. along with the occasional rare little intriguing mystery… please keep pouring them into our ears, trot on all you Unicorns!
Been watching you for a few years now. I admire you so much. Your advice is so based on experience. I cannot ride anymore, but have three horses, how old is to old to teach a horse to drive. All are excellent in traffic, but now wasting because I cannot ride. What would be your advice?
So long as the horse is fit and happy to do the job, no age is too old really! Barry has trained a 17 year old ex-point-to-point riding horse who's owner in her eighties who could no longer ride him - so far as we last heard, they are still driving together! We also train many outgrown children's ponies in their teens for families who couldn't bear to part with them. It is easier if the horse has done some work in the past, as growing muscle on an older horse can be difficult, but generally so long as the horse is capable physically, there should be no upper age limit within reason!
Your life is a desert and barry hook youtube is Your oasis? The world is a desert and the harmonious coexistence of humans and horses is an oasis? Men are a deserts in this times without a good relationship with horses?
Have you heard of drawing a line of salt in front of a chicken’s beak? She becomes hypnotised and is transfixed; so might it be feasible that the lovely soft monotone grey undisturbed colour of a newly covered road, calms and relaxes the horses in that they see and feel absolutely no threat whatsoever…?.
That is a bit of a myth that has been perpetuated over the years,❤I Know this is not what happens because I tried it with my Free range hens as a teenager,,,, and I tried it every which ways 😅 (I was young and foolish, and I was told this by my Uncle John who was a bit of a joker!!) Perhaps I had the Wrong kind of chicken?!!❤

Oh my what a gorgeous get up! My week is complete.

The new road service is more consistent in both surface texture and colour, so in turn gives more confidence..definitely agree 👍
Have a good weekend driving, Baz and Rhi!! Drive safe! Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦

Could the new road surface have different smells , no fuel or rubber contamination just natural stone or tar .
Quite possible, yes! It would be great to be able to ask them directly, but that's not an unreasonable answer at all.
