Sylvius Leopold Weiss is simply wonderful. His work should be as famous as Bach's work.
My prized possession is Robert Barto's collection of Weiss' Lute Sonatas. What a sensitive and consummate artist so true to the tablature! Not a day goes by but there's a Weiss CD playing in my house...the other is Bach! Two Baroque giants of frets and keyboard!

Sylvius Leopold WEISS 1687~1750 ...born in Silesia, Weiss service with various princes had taken him to Rome, where he received his formative impressions. He returned to Germany bearing the cantabile lute style of Italy. Bach probably met him in Dresden, and the two men had developed a lively exchange of ideas. When they got together they "competed in improvisation and played fugues". …
