  • Plastic parts... do you use thermoforming or injection molding?
Thermoforming provides many benefits over injection molding for larger parts such as golf cart tops ATV bodies and gas pumps. Thermoforming has many surprise benefits such as strength and weight. Today we welcome Bob Carrier and David Grice from C&K Plastics to tell you and show you how the thermoforming process works on ASK A GURU.
C&K Plastics offers a comprehensive range of services and capabilities including: vacuum forming, pressure forming, twin sheet forming and a full compliment of secondary operations.

What is the difference between vacuum forming and thermoforming?
Vacuum forming uses controlled heat, force, and vacuum to make a thermoplastic sheet pliable enough to conform to a mold contour. Thermoforming generally relies on temperature only.
    What is Pressure Forming?
Pressure forming is similar to vacuum forming, but it uses high-pressure air assist to create significantly better part definition.
    What is Twin-Sheet Forming?
Twin Sheet Forming uses distinct top- and bottom molds, heat, and vacuum to create a void between two sheets of plastic while forming a strong edge seal.
    What is Vacuum Forming?
Vacuum forming is the process of taking a flat thermoplastic sheet and using controlled heat to make it pliable enough to conform to a mold contour by simultaneously applying force and vacuum. Vacuum-formed parts are typically three-dimensional, and finished parts will have the defined shape and detail on one side.

The machine is called a sheet machine that oversized molds and heavy gauge material will not fit into a inline thermoforing machine. Female molds use plug assist for deep draws along with snap-back. I worked in thermoforming for 37 years and even helped Sencorp in R & D on their 2500 and 2200 3 station inline. Setup is pretty easy getting the machine to run is a art form. Webs and thin walls along with host of other troubleshooting skills.

Great information for manufacturing large & strong plastic parts. I assume that "no wives were harmed in the making of this video"..??

Hmmm.... I thought injection molding was the only option for a product I'm developing, but now I will have to experiment with vacuum forming. Can I get sheet material with carbon or glass fiber fill? I'll have to look into this!

    I have a question
I have a thermoform machine which I just purchased , every thing is working fine but the issue is the trimming process, the heating ,forming are all perfect but the trimming section is giving issues, . It trims perfectly when machine works for the first 20 min's but longer than that it no longer trims well

      Sounds like a heat issue

    Can rpet be thermoformed

RPT is a strong and durable material that is often used in insulation, packaging, and construction applications. However, it is not suitable for thermoforming.
