How to Put Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV) on T-Shirt | DIY | Make Your Own T-Shirt | No Heat Press

  • Hi Foxy Friends! Today I am showing you how to use Heat Transfer Vinyl on a t-shirt without a heat press. That's right I used a regular iron with the no steam setting. It seems super hard, but really once you do it once, you'll want to keep making more and more! Anytime you hear a cool quote, you want to put it on a t-shirt. Once you get the hang of it, it does make it easier to have some sort of heat press, I have the Easy Press (bought after making this video) so that I can put it away and not have it out all the time.

    My favorite part of the video was that there were no dislikes after it didn't go perfect on the first try. The internet ghouls must have missed this one. I appreciate that it didn't go right the first time because that was my experience. Other youtubers would have edited that out. I feel normal again. thanks!!!!

      It's useful to see that it's not easy to apply a vinyl even for someone who's done it before, so we newbies can be prepared if encountering similar issues.

    I like the way you broke it down and got straight to the point but can u explain to me what is cricut program? And where do i design the words at like what font i wont and all that other stuff

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So the cricut uses it's own software called Cricut Design Space where you do all of your designing for your projects. If you had a Silhouette Cameo they also have their own program called Silhouette Studio. You can find free fonts at dafont.com, so you pick what you like, downloard to your computer and start designing in the program of the machine you use. There are other free programs, like Inkscape that you can use to design things and then import into the machine program as well. The file extension that works best for both programs are called .SVG, so if you were looking on Etsy for already made things, look for SVG files. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes! If you want to start an etsy store I would maybe suggest instead of using an iron to use an Easy Press or Heat Press. But for now the iron will work, the others just make it a little easier. Make sure to state to wash inside out. I haven't had a problem with letters coming up. When are you done pressing, make sure that you can sort of see the shirt material coming through on the letters, you'll be able to sort of see the pattern of the fibers. That way you know you have a good bond. Good luck with your Etsy store!

    Do you have to cut the design mirrored? I’m a bit confused 🤔

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes you do because when using Heat Transfer Vinyl you have to iron on the plastic side, with the vinyl facing down, but in order to cut that out, you have to cut it mirrored, so when you flip the design so that vinyl is on the shirt/hat/fabric and plastic side is up, the letters are the correct way. With regulars vinyl (think, like creating a sticker) you cut the design and use like a sticker. Hope that makes a little more sense?

      Yes when cutting HTV you mirror the image. I've forgotten to click that mirror image button too many times to count!

    so if my design comes in two colors do I need to buy two vinyl colors?

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes. But when layering two colors, don't do the full 30 seconds on the bottom layer. Just press it enough to get it to stick to your fabric, maybe 5-10 seconds, and then add your other layer on top. You'll get shrinkage with the bottom layer and your top layer might not line up. Good luck with your project!

      @@FoxysDomesticSide thank you for your answer if I do infuse ink work will this be possible or need to be vinyl?

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thawareechan3015 I've never done infusible ink and vinyl together. Remember if you use Infusible ink that you have to have a mostly polyester shirt. I guess it would work, but I don't think it would look very good together. Since the infusible ink looks like it is a part of the shirt, while the vinyl lays on top of the shirt.

    Can I use a printer instead of the circut?

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could use Printable HTV, or buy some of the iron transfer from Michael's. Just make sure you cut out the shape/words as close to what you print as possible, so you don't see the transfer sheet on your shirt.

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      typically you would use a permeant vinyl (651) on a cup (like a sticker), this needs heat transfer vinyl (HTV) which needs some sort of heat source to make it "stick", does that make sense?

      Wash inside out and it should last for a long while. If it starts to peel, just repeat the process on ironing it back on :)

    What’s the clear paper? I’m a bit confused

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The clear paper is what the heat transfer vinyl comes on. So your cutting machine will cut the vinyl and not the clear plastic. Then you can press the vinyl onto your clothing and peel off the clear plastic part which leaves the heat transfer vinyl stuck to your clothing. Hope that makes sense?

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@msmariarivera813 If you are cutting it correctly the HTV should never separate from from the clear plastic sheet until you iron onto whatever you are ironing it to. It sounds like you might have permanent vinyl?

    How long do these prints last?

    • @FoxysDomesticSide
      @FoxysDomesticSide  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well depends on how you take care of them. But if you apply the vinyl correctly and wash inside out and dry in low they should last quite a while. I have a shirt that I wear quite often and it is still going strong. If your vinyl ever starts to peel off, repress and good to go!
