I’ve taken to charring whenever the ground is part of the build. Good build to expand the wood for the fire. I really like that wood stove and the idea of re- burning the smoke for heat. Very nice.
The only down fall of that stove is tyat system. If you mess up the converter it will cost you $300-$500 for a new one. But if run right it will last 5-10 years.
Thank you. How is your place coming along? Herald said you have been doing a lot. One of these days we will have to get together. Now put out some videos bro. lol
My husband and i grew up in rural Northern Michigan. There was never a break in the summer because there was always work to be done around the property. Wood was our only source of heat, so it's a constant thought. Cutting, splitting, stacking, gathering, and finally burning. Wash, rinse, repeat. We live in Tennessee now and miss the simpler life (simple does not mean easy) we grew up in. We appreciate all the values we were taught, and yes, we even miss the hard work sometimes, but we will never, ever miss the wood only heat. 😅 Great thanks to you and Sarah for another great, informative video. I look forward to the next one. As always, Christina
Hi guys. Nothing is more important than a good woodshed. We also burn all types of wood but really prefer birch especially on them cold winter days. We also have a fire on daily for part of the day but like you said, to get the dampness out. Great video. Cheers 🌷🇨🇦
It is a plus anytime you can have lumber milled on your own property. You do amazing on the voiceovers Rob. Maybe one day we'll get to stay at your B&B.

I stumbled onto your channel and im so glad i did! I am enjoying your content so far. Its so interesting to me (i live in the desert in the usa) to see what you have to do for winter preparation, that far north! Thanks for sharing 👍🏼 😊
@curmudgeinnak one day i hope to visit Alaska and see the beauty of it for myself. In the meantime I'll just watch your videos! I'm really enjoying your channel.
They are amazing. The other good one is Quatrafire or Quadra fire. Can not remember the spelling. That one does not have the converter but burns just as clean and efficient.
Hey Rob, great video looks familiar, I've been on wood for 2 weeks up to 18 cords so far my woodshed is 12×35 , finally got my greenhouse done and ready too, wanted to ask you where you got all your black planting pots? Take care and hope to see you eventually. Mike
Hey Mike, I dropped 15+ birch in the winter and we will start bucking them up and splitting this week to start filling the new shed. We have had great luck cutting in mid winter and bucking and splitting in the fall. Everytime we do it by the following fall the wood is at 18% or lower. Perfect for burning. As to the black planters Nancy got them from someplace in town. We have a lot of them. We will be changing the greenhouse a little in the spring and will use them in other places to grow stuff. Hope you are doing good. Did you get my DM on FB?
We have not done a proper walk around yet. When we got here the place had stuff all over the place and as soon as we have it tidied up a bit more I will do a full walk around. Our main focus has been finishing the new house and that is almost done now.
a splitter is the way to go for sure. I can split a lot by hand but why stress the body out. None of us are getting any younger. ;-). Thanks for watching.
It is the old stigma of burning a pine tree. It will make your flue clog up in short order and cause a fire. The Spruce for us has been dead for 6-7 years or more but still standing. Bone dry.
Curious why wood you build the wood shed so far away from your house? I built my wood shed about 20 feet from the house and in winter thats far enough away. I live in northern Ontario Can. We probably get just as much snow as you. We also live off grid and have for 20 years, to me life is good. Love watching your vids. Have a great day.
That large shed is for seasoning the wood. We have a number of other sheds that hold 3 or so cord each. As the ones in the large shed age and dry we will transfer them to the other sheds as needed. I like to have as much wood on hand as possible just in case we have a super cold winter.
Currently we use maybe 80lb of propane a year. and a few hundred gallons of gas and diesel a year. It comes up on the Railroads Tundra Truck service a few times a year.

Lots of hard work but in the end so very rewarding especially when enjoying the heat during the height of winter.👍👍👍
Exactly. Heats you three times sometimes more. lol

Alaska living doesn't have the word "bored" in it. Y'all are constantly improving the property for sure.
Lol this is very true. We never sit still very long.
Nice to see someone reuse and repurpose items.
We try to reuse anything we can here. Makes for less waste.
Love y’all! Thank you for sharing with us! 😁
You are very welcome. Thank you for being here with us.
Oh my gosh...that stove 😍 All the work will be so worth it when you're getting to enjoy the heat in those frigid times!
Enjoyed the video, thanks!
That little stove is amazing. The cook stove in the main house is amazing to just not as efficient.
lovely people god bless x

Thank you my friend.
Rob, I like how you repurpose material . I’d say as remote You and Sarah are, it’s a necessity .
It is. We have no real way to get rid of things. Sooner or later I will have to find a way to get rid of certain things.
Beautiful day!

I think a lot of country kids have different thoughts on how we all got raised. We do not seem to mind the hard work at all.
Nice start and I can't wait to see the finished areas!!

Thank you Paula and Jason. you guys are the best.
Great video, little by little gets it done.

Thank you and you as well. :-)
What a great log store. You are really making your home soo much nicer!
Thank you! We want to keep it nice and comfy for us and guest that come up.

Hello and thank you. It is slowly getting filled now. :-)
Rob I need to build a wood shed here. We’ve been storing it in our shop right now.
The sheds are the best way to go. Keeps the mess down for sure. Hope you all are well Jan.

Thank you.

Wow, so much hard work and lots of wood. Winter is coming and I know where to go get wood. lol
lol, Hey you. How are things? Did you close??? Drop me a text.

Make sure you change that Fiskar handle coolant annually Rob. 😂
That's hilarious. I was thinking the same thing. 😂
I just drained it. Need to refill it. lol. Keep the bears up that way Ed. Send the wolves down here please.
I really like what your doing with the property great video thanks for sharing here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Thank you Mike. We are enjoying it as well.
Judging by the water that must be a Fiskars axe. I've had that happen to me before. lol
LMBO. You are correct. I love it but I always have to remember to drain it if I left it sitting with the head down.
Lots of work, but better done in Summer than winter
Hey Rob, Yen and I are coming one day! ....I've got the twin sister to that wood stove in my house....thankfully 4-6 weeks before splitting time here.
Nice. Hope to see you up here my friend. I love that little stove
Those birch trees are huge compared to the ones we have!
And some are MUCH larger. I have burls on a few that are half the size of the side by side.

That is the problem sometimes. You hear so many versions of the same thing it is hard to know which is right.

The video should be from around this time last year.

What would some people consider wrong with burning spruce wood?
It is the old stigma of burning a pine tree. It will make your flue clog up in short order and cause a fire. The Spruce for us has been dead for 6-7 years or more but still standing. Bone dry.
Great job! How many acres do you guys have?
We have just over 4 acres. We hope to purchase the empty lot next to us to make it a total of 9 acres.
Amazed by the over growth of grasses, shrubs and weeds on your property. It seems like losing battle. How often do you cut it back k?
to often. Everything grows very fast here.
