Gameplay-wise the original Super Mario Bros is definitely a C. I agree with Kit lol sure it started it all but compared to all the other games it's very bare bones and I'd argue any argument you can make for it, those same arguments work for the rest of the games. Also I'd argue Yoshis Island is absolute S Tier and probably the best 2D platformer ever. My favorite is Mario Bros 3 but Yoshis Island felt ahead of its time with its graphics, mechanics, and using the foreground and background to its advantage. Superb.
The way you feel about the original Super Mario Bros. is how I feel about Super Mario 64 lol. Also I think Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is the best 2D platformer, even if it might not count as a Mario game.
I can see a big Mario fan not being into yoshis island. The egg aiming and throwing is quite different than just jumping on an enemy. That being said, yoshis island is A tier for me! Almost S.
Not me over here swirling my glass of wine as I contemplate why Kit added Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to this list and not Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
I pretty much agree with the combined tier list. Agree with Krysta that Yoshi's Island shouldn't be on the list, but disagree with the rating. Agree a bit closer with Kit's ratings, and the fact that the Makers belong on the list, but disagree with Yoshi's Island being on the list. Turns out I'm team Kit & Krysta after all!!! ❤
I can't believe Mario Maker almost "demake" their friendship. Had them silent for a couple of seconds after arguing wether it belonged on the list or not lol
I know its been a while since they left Nintendo, but its honestly so weird having them be like "This Mario game sucks and the devs need to know" but its so hilarious at the same time. I do agree Mario 1 honestly deserves to be high on the list. Not only an influential game but its perfectly playable to this day. Anyone can pick it up and learn how to play it. Also yeah Super Mario World is S++++++++++++++*
As a Wii U advocate, I will defend NSMBU to my dying breath. Every New Super Mario game had better level design than the last, and U is the best 2D Mario out there. I am glad they're making Wonder more different, but I disagree that they pushed the New series too far, it went just far enough!
If Nintendo ever does a a remake for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, I wish they drop the Super Mario World 2 branding and so it can be named the Yoshi's Island remake. They can even make it more of a Yoshi game too in the remake.
I haven't played every 2D Mario, but I am in the progress of playing every Mario game on a marathon currently. Here's my thoughts: S - Mario 3 and Mario World tied (I prefer Mario 3, but I really respect World for being able to squeeze so much into one cartridge. There's so much content and so many alternate paths.), Donkey Kong on the Game Boy (maybe more of a Donkey Kong game than a Mario game, but this is one of Nintendo's greatest games they've ever made. The controls are flawless and the level design is amazing. I just wanted an excuse to talk about this game lol), Mario Maker 1 A - Mario 2/Lost Levels (I enjoy the challenge a lot. I felt challenged to put the skills I developed through playing the first game to the test. Even though sometimes the level design is mean, I never expect to understand or be great at a game my first time playing. I take a first playthrough to learn, and subsequent playthroughs to remember and I have a lot of fun playing this one as a result of teaching myself how to play the game), New Super Mario Bros. DS B - Mario 2/USA (not a Mario game, but it is a great game in its own right and a significant improvement over Doki Doki Panic in pretty much every way), Yoshi's Island (I agree that this doesn't count as a Mario game exactly, but I'll include it because you guys did. The "Mario World 2" title that Kit brought up was a marketing gimmick outside of Japan because they were afraid a Yoshi-only game wouldn't sell outside of Japan. This would be an A because the graphics are amazing and most of the levels are very fun to play through casually, but I 100%ed the game and I hate that I subjected myself to that thinking I'd get something cool like Mario World. This game sucks to 100%) C - Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Bros. 1, Super Mario Land (this would be a D if it wasn't brimming with so much personality, the music is great, the enemies are really cool, Superball rocks. Great fun when you're at the hospital waiting room or on a car ride. I respect it too much to put in D), New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Maker 2 (I miss the Amiibo costumes, and yeah this doesn't feel as great to make courses despite being a clear improvement with more course elements. Slopes aren't enough to make it better than the original) D - New Super Mario Bros. 2 (I don't like this game much, but it's perfectly fine. Not as bad as people say, but it doesn't try anything particularly new or exciting)
@@alessiocece2098 yes because I've played Mario Land 1 on car rides or at the hospital and I had a good time with it lol. it's not amazing but when it's one of the only games you have for your handheld, you end up playing it a lot to get better at it
@@twangy_juice8126 ah, I read it as in the game/Mario! 😅😂😂 I flied over/skipped through the text a bit, so that's probably one reason!.... For me it's amazing, I would easily put it into A or even S, but the very least B! I also (especially) loved that the levels would get harder after beating the game, so more enemies in the levels etc. ....but I think I never made more than 2 or 3 rounds I guess...since you couldnt save the game, you always had to Play through one go/round..... So why no nso!? 😑😑
I would've rated The Lost Levels higher than a D. If you do the 1-up shell trick in World 1-1, the game becomes less frustrating for the most part. It's definitely an acquired taste, though.
You've inspired me to create my first tier list, because, I want to accommodate Super Mario Land higher, why is everyone hating on that game? Mario can use a spaceship on it, a SPACESHIP!
For me… Super Mario Bros - C Super Mario Bros Lost Levels - D Super Mario Bros 2 - D Super Mario Bros 3 - B Super Mario Land - C Super Mario World - S Super Mario Land 2 - S Super Mario World 2 Yoshi’s Island - A Super Mario All Stars - A New Super Mario Bros. - B New Super Mario Bros Wii - B New Super Mario Bros U - A New Super Mario Bros 2 - B New Super Luigi U - C Super Mario Maker - A Super Mario Run - D Super Mario Maker 2 - C
Pretty good tier list! Very similar to what I would rank them with the 2 biggest differences being Mario 2 (USA) Being in A Tier instead of the OG Mario bros. The variety in characters and how different it was made it more memorable compared to the first game imo. The second change would be bumping up Super Mario All Stars to S tier because to me its the definitive way of playing those classic games and the graphics/artstyle is a really big step up imo.
I can already tell this will be a great video😂 Can’t wait for Wonder! Edit: New Super Mario Bros Wii was my first video game ever, and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. I mostly just watched my parents play it, but it’s what got me interested in video games.
I'm not going to challenge the overall ranking for NSMB 2, but I think coin rush in combination with street pass gets hard overlooked. I remember at Uni having rival strangers who I would walk by once or twice a week and face off against once I got home. Yeah, the levels weren't the most inspired as a single player experience, but they fit that vs mode super well.
I'm so with Krysta on Yoshi's Island. The stages are boring if you don't wanna nab everything, and they're frustrating if you do try to 100% them. What keeps me from putting it at D tier is the music and aesthetic. It's a beautiful game with an outstanding soundtrack.
Krysta was right. There are plenty of genuine Super Mario games to just have those ranked versus all of the 'spin offs'. Good list. I like the New Super Mario U as a level 'A', because it is HD, power ups are good, and it kept true to the original game design.
But that's what they or some others criticize! 😅 being "true" to the Game design....Instead of/not "risking" other crazy ideas/creativity, like with Wonder now!
Sorry Krysta, but you’re wrong about Super Mario Maker 1 and 2, especially 2. Let’s look at your own criteria: 1.) Can you play as Mario? Definitely yes. 2.) Are there official courses from Nintendo? Mario Maker 1 is a little iffy but there is still some pre-made things. Mario Maker 2 is a definite yes. There are over 100 ready to play courses without having to touch the making side of it. User courses are a mixed bag, but some are well done and very creative. Therefore, by your own criteria, Super Mario Maker 1 and 2 are 2D Super Mario Games, and they definitely belong on the list!
yoshi's island is better than super mario world, but it's not a mario game. super mario maker is a mario game and was maybe the best one, wish 2 had recaptured the magic but oh well.
Was not expecting this to be so heated due to answering the question "[X] game isn't a Mario game", I was anticipating a civil war on the grounds of "What's better: Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World?". A very fun video though with a lot to agree and disagree with! I'm curious though, if Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island was considered for the list, why wasn't Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 on the same basis? I personally would rank it as a B-A tier title for twisting the Mario formula and helping to invent the traditional puzzle platformer! My personal ranking of 2D Marios would go: 1. Super Mario World (speaks for itself, pure platforming perfection) 2. Super Mario Maker 2 (this game's flaws are way overstated and its still infinite new Mario levels in your favorite styles) 3. Super Mario Maker (only held up this high by how good using the Wii U gamepad is and the amiibo costumes, otherwise SMM2 clears) 4. Super Mario Bros 3 (I personally prefer my levels to be longer, though this game has excellent variety and quality so it stays up here) 5. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (I used to be a big naysayer about this game but having recently replayed it has a very unique kind of exploratory, 2D collectathon nature that I quite enjoyed) 6. New Super Mario Bros (at the time, adapting 3D Mario's moveset was innovative with huge ramifications on the level designs coupled with the cool power ups made for an utterly unique game) 7. Super Mario Bros 2 (plays really well and the series first foray with different playable characters to mix up the platforming, on top of its more action oriented direction) 8. New Super Mario Bros U (overly hated and has the best iteration on NSMBWii's level design. Luigi U improves it even further with some of the best callbacks to SMB3 level design) 9. Super Mario All Stars (agree with K&K on not liking the art style in these as much, nor their physics as much individually, but as a collective its a nice cohesive package of wonderful games) 10. New Super Mario Bros Wii (fun level designs with an innovative concept of allowing for simultaneous multiplayer that I feel other games do better) 11. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (such a good course correction on the original SML with a ton of personality and unique mechanics and level design making proper use of the GB) 12. Super Mario Bros (an innovative and important classic that is infinitely replayable but its antiquated physics makes it hard to stick with for a full game playthrough all the time) 13. New Super Mario Bros 2 (an interesting experiment in game design and level design, but ultimately does not endear itself to me) 14. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (an underrated experiment in hard game design meant to test those that mastered the original, but not the best suited for consumption by the average player) 15. Super Mario Land (an oddly brief experiment to prove the GB is capable of full console experiences, albeit after a ton of paring down) 16. Super Mario Run (not a bad game, and an interesting entry in the endless runner genre, but lacks good replayability and enough Mario-isms to put it higher on the list) I can't wait to get my hands on Super Mario Bros Wonder to see how it ranks!
To respond to Krista's comment, and to be (technically) fair to Yoshi's Island, there are some mini sections where you do control Mario. If you touch the bouncy stars in a few levels, Yoshi becomes an egg and baby Mario runs along the ground. He even has a little cape too! ...though yes, it's mostly just controlling Yoshi. X3
Mario Maker 2 has issues (online co-op being bad, removing Amiibo costumes, and no gamepad) but I look past it for a few reasons. One, they introduced so many new mechanics, and updated the hell out of it so that by the end, the amount of possibilities was near endless. Two, because people who played the first one played the second, it gave us all time to get better at Mario making. I find there's way more quality levels in this one. Three: Super Worlds.
I stand with Krysta on this one. Yoshi's Island is the first in the Yoshi series and not part of the Mario series. "Is Yoshi not a Mario character?" They are, but does that make Donkey Kong Country a Mario game?

The original isnt a S because its the original. The later games are better so they would rank higher then a S.
Yoshi’s Island is better than Super Mario World
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is easily an A-tier game for me.
totally
I tried it on the nso a few times and it seems so slow and boring to me (sry, hate me! 😅😅)
As hard as this video must’ve been to record, it was hilarious to watch 😂 keep it up!
Yoshis island is a Mario game and it is an S!!
SMB2 being a B is insane, I respect it but I think it's at least an A
Kit and Krysta fights are what it's all about, few things make me laugh more I gotta say hahaha
🙄🙄🙄
Why rank All Stars if you aren't going to rank the re-releases on GBA? SMB3 in particular had what was essentially a "Bowser's Fury" expansion.
Huh? 🤔 you mean the length for it or what?
I can see a big Mario fan not being into yoshis island. The egg aiming and throwing is quite different than just jumping on an enemy. That being said, yoshis island is A tier for me! Almost S.
Not me over here swirling my glass of wine as I contemplate why Kit added Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to this list and not Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land
I love the genuine disagreements in this video.
Kit is the Simon Cowell of ranking 🤭😂 I enjoyed the video nonetheless.
My top 3 favourite 2D Mario games of all time is number 1 Super Mario Bros wonder, number 2 new Super Mario Bros 2 and number 3 Super Mario World. ❤😁❤
Uhmm wonder isnt even out yet!...
I've never disagreed with Krysta more than I have with her terrible opinion of Yoshi's Island
So you also hate Mario Land?
Naah, I don't hate it. But I would play pretty much every other one before playing Mario Land again @@alessiocece2098
I can't believe Mario Maker almost "demake" their friendship. Had them silent for a couple of seconds after arguing wether it belonged on the list or not lol
😂😂😂, Cmn Kitt Super Mario Bros is a S
"Super Mario Bros. - S" That's a W for Krysta
SMB3 > Super Mario World
I know its been a while since they left Nintendo, but its honestly so weird having them be like "This Mario game sucks and the devs need to know" but its so hilarious at the same time.
I do agree Mario 1 honestly deserves to be high on the list. Not only an influential game but its perfectly playable to this day. Anyone can pick it up and learn how to play it. Also yeah Super Mario World is S++++++++++++++*
Oooooh, I've never been more Kit gang before..! No no no, Krysta!
13:37 THE MOMENT. in case you stumble late to this video
Super Mario Bros. 1 is absolutely one hundred thousand percent S tier, and still holds up now Lol great video one of my favorites so far
Wow, yoshis island is an S tier for me. I like it better than mario world
Mario Maker 2 S tier
As a Wii U advocate, I will defend NSMBU to my dying breath. Every New Super Mario game had better level design than the last, and U is the best 2D Mario out there. I am glad they're making Wonder more different, but I disagree that they pushed the New series too far, it went just far enough!
If Nintendo ever does a a remake for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, I wish they drop the Super Mario World 2 branding and so it can be named the Yoshi's Island remake. They can even make it more of a Yoshi game too in the remake.
NSMB U deserved to be A, even if only because of Luigi U!
Yoshi's Island is an S tier, better than the best 2D Marios. both wrong, especially Krysta. It's also the only great Yoshi game however
This is too funny. "Why do you hate Mario?"
Since Kit is a "big" fan of Sonic you guys should do a tier list for the 2D games especially with Superstar coming out.
Easy, sonic origins at z teir and the rest are a
@@themonado5030uhmmmm....OK......
To put the original Mario at A is crazy. It's iconic yes, but it does not hold up anymore.
I haven't played every 2D Mario, but I am in the progress of playing every Mario game on a marathon currently. Here's my thoughts:
S - Mario 3 and Mario World tied (I prefer Mario 3, but I really respect World for being able to squeeze so much into one cartridge. There's so much content and so many alternate paths.), Donkey Kong on the Game Boy (maybe more of a Donkey Kong game than a Mario game, but this is one of Nintendo's greatest games they've ever made. The controls are flawless and the level design is amazing. I just wanted an excuse to talk about this game lol), Mario Maker 1
A - Mario 2/Lost Levels (I enjoy the challenge a lot. DS
B - Mario 2/USA (not a Mario game, but it is a great game in its own right and a significant improvement over Doki Doki Panic in pretty much every way), Yoshi's Island (I agree that this doesn't count as a Mario game exactly, but I'll include it because you guys did. This game sucks to 100%)
C - Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Bros. Slopes aren't enough to make it better than the original)
D - New Super Mario Bros. 2 (I don't like this game much, but it's perfectly fine. Not as bad as people say, but it doesn't try anything particularly new or exciting)
Uhmm, are you sure you're talking about Mario Land 1 when saying he's waiting in a Hospital or being in a car!?
I agree 100% with SMB3 and SMW. Those two games I really enjoyed🤩
Thank you for another tier list, guys. We really appreciate it 🙏❤
I wouldn’t count Super Mario World 2 as a Mario game the same way I wouldn’t count Super Mario Land 3 a Mario game
If you count Yoshi’s Island as a Mario game, you have to also count Wario Land (Super Mario Land 3)
Do you have two Accounts perhaps?
@@alessiocece2098 Just the one
@@Melonposting OK, because another guy has made almost the exact same comment! 😅
For me…
Super Mario Bros - C
Super Mario Bros Lost Levels - D
Super Mario Bros 2 - D
Super Mario Bros 3 - B
Super Mario Land - C
Super Mario World - S
Super Mario Land 2 - S
Super Mario World 2 Yoshi’s Island - A
Super Mario All Stars - A
New Super Mario Bros. - B
New Super Mario Bros Wii - B
New Super Mario Bros U - A
New Super Mario Bros 2 - B
New Super Luigi U - C
Super Mario Maker - A
Super Mario Run - D
Super Mario Maker 2 - C
Super Mario Land I think it's really fun pick-and-play game. Also, classical music!
Yeah it's way better! 🙄 than they or he depicted, for sure!....and I don't mean their opinion....
Did Mario ds have the mini games and casino or was that Mario 64 ds?
They both did. Super Mario 64 DS had more of them, though.
So you also hate Mario Land?
@@alessiocece2098 Never did I really say that but is it weaker than the other titles I mentioned? Yes.
Yoshi Island is an A but I wouldn't call it a Mario game either.
And thus this video was the declaration for Civil War
Mario Maker 3, have your smart phone be the "GamePad"
Can I buy the Kit and Krysta controller in the background?
I can already tell this will be a great video😂 Can’t wait for Wonder!
Edit: New Super Mario Bros Wii was my first video game ever, and it’ll always hold a special place in my heart. I mostly just watched my parents play it, but it’s what got me interested in video games.
I love their banter so much
I'm not going to challenge the overall ranking for NSMB 2, but I think coin rush in combination with street pass gets hard overlooked.
My personal ranking of 2D Marios would go:
1. Super Mario World (speaks for itself, pure platforming perfection)
2. Super Mario Maker 2 (this game's flaws are way overstated and its still infinite new Mario levels in your favorite styles)
3. Super Mario Maker (only held up this high by how good using the Wii U gamepad is and the amiibo costumes, otherwise SMM2 clears)
4. Super Mario Bros 3 (I personally prefer my levels to be longer, though this game has excellent variety and quality so it stays up here)
5. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (I used to be a big naysayer about this game but having recently replayed it has a very unique kind of exploratory, 2D collectathon nature that I quite enjoyed)
6. New Super Mario Bros (at the time, adapting 3D Mario's moveset was innovative with huge ramifications on the level designs coupled with the cool power ups made for an utterly unique game)
7. Super Mario Bros 2 (plays really well and the series first foray with different playable characters to mix up the platforming, on top of its more action oriented direction)
8. New Super Mario Bros U (overly hated and has the best iteration on NSMBWii's level design. Luigi U improves it even further with some of the best callbacks to SMB3 level design)
9. Super Mario All Stars (agree with K&K on not liking the art style in these as much, nor their physics as much individually, but as a collective its a nice cohesive package of wonderful games)
10. New Super Mario Bros Wii (fun level designs with an innovative concept of allowing for simultaneous multiplayer that I feel other games do better)
11. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (such a good course correction on the original SML with a ton of personality and unique mechanics and level design making proper use of the GB)
12. Super Mario Bros (an innovative and important classic that is infinitely replayable but its antiquated physics makes it hard to stick with for a full game playthrough all the time)
13. New Super Mario Bros 2 (an interesting experiment in game design and level design, but ultimately does not endear itself to me)
14. Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels (an underrated experiment in hard game design meant to test those that mastered the original, but not the best suited for consumption by the average player)
15. Super Mario Land (an oddly brief experiment to prove the GB is capable of full console experiences, albeit after a ton of paring down)
16. Super Mario Run (not a bad game, and an interesting entry in the endless runner genre, but lacks good replayability and enough Mario-isms to put it higher on the list)
I can't wait to get my hands on Super Mario Bros Wonder to see how it ranks!
I agree with all of Krysta's opinions about which ones should be on this list!
But IMO the Mario makers definitely belong there....I mean they're literally sm Bros level designers.....
It's still not a Mario game (for me and for most others and even officially.... it's a yoshi game after all! 😅)
Finally... a Tier List I can agree with
I grew up with all stars and enjoyed the added backgrounds, more immersion imho😊
Their chemistry is… interesting 😅
I stand with Krysta on this one. Yoshi's Island is the first in the Yoshi series and not part of the Mario series.
"Is Yoshi not a Mario character?"
They are, but does that make Donkey Kong Country a Mario game?
