God allowed a stroke & mental illness to get my attention

  • Allan Gallant suffered a stroke in July of 2017. It was so severe, the doctor said it was a miracle he survived. He should have been paralyzed on his right side, but God spared his life and body. Allan did suffer paralysis; his voice and speech were gone completely. He was in shock. God restored his voice, but different from what it was. He has what is called “aphasia”, a degenerative communication disorder. The very thing that gave him purpose from preaching and singing, changed. After recovering from the stroke and going through speech therapy, he noticed he was struggling deeply with panic and anxiety issues. He ended up in the mental health hospital for 10 days, and at one point wanted to end his life. Through his recovery, God gave him and his wife a burden for people who suffer with mental health disorders. The burden shaped into developing a ministry to focus on the stigma of mental health. Allan has been accepted as a Chaplain with The Fellowship and has launched their ministry called AGORA Network Ministries which seeks to equip, educate and engage the local church to the mental health stigma inside and outside its walls. www.agoranetworkministries.com

One thing I noticed about most of these stories is most have someone to share their journeys with. Most have spouses. I have been suffering alone for many many years and losing hope. The battle of life is hard enough and then suffering alone makes it unbearable.

Being married is work. Desire God. Married or not, God is who you truly desire. You can't put the burden on a spouse or anyone to bring you happiness.

It is harder alone, I agree. But often the spouse is not on your side and this makes things even harder. Many of us are single, and The Lord is responsible for us. He must makes things ok in our heart and mind. He will. I pray you receive His peace and joy and that the enemy of our souls is not able to take those away from you🙏✝️💟

What a powerful and inspirational testimony. The lord uses our pain and struggles to get our attention because sometimes we only focus on ourselves and on earthly life. All things work together for our good and use it for his glory.

      2 Timothy 2:19-26
But the solid foundation that God has laid cannot be shaken; and on it are written these words: “The Lord knows those who are his” and “All who say that they belong to the Lord must turn away from wrongdoing.” In a large house there are dishes and bowls of all kinds: some are made of silver and gold, others of wood and clay; some are for special occasions, others for ordinary use. If anyone makes himself or herself clean from all those evil things, they will be used for special purposes, because they are dedicated and useful to their Master, ready to be used for every good deed. Avoid the passions of youth, and strive for righteousness, faith, love, and peace, together with those who with a pure heart call out to the Lord for help. But keep away from foolish and ignorant arguments; you know that they end up in quarrels. As the Lord's servant, you must not quarrel. You must be kind towards all, a good and patient teacher, gentle as you correct your opponents, for it may be that God will give them the opportunity to repent and come to know the truth. And then they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the Devil, who had caught them and made them obey his will.

I got rhabdo from a workout at the gym once and couldn’t straighten my arms for a week, that freaked me out so I can imagine the fear of your hand clenching up after a stroke. Not fun. God has us in this humble state to be able to appreciate his mercies even more. God bless you, you seem like a cool man and like you made a very good recovery (you’re sharp)

never leave us when we are down.

As a human who has to live the everyday difficulties of existence like everyone else, when you people of faith say things like this, it sounds like when people make excuses for an abusive boyfriend. "I had to hit her so that she behaves the way I want her to." I would have a problem with it if that same grace were extended to people. But it's not. When humans, who don't now what we're doing and lack the guidance of an "absentee parent", make such a mistake, we're 'monsters'. When God does it, he's the "almighty benevolent". It sounds like Stockholm Syndrome to me.

i can't agree with this title...
God never gives or causes you pain or illness. those are often results of natural cause or side effects from living in the world instead of with Jesus.

@@hadassahe3854 how can you say that? You probably dont see or ignore the realities of life to give you a sense that you're in control. I was a hospice nurse and worked the ICU through the pandemic. I've seen many people die. Ive seen kids die. You cant tell me it's always gods will to heal. Its not. If there is a god it's our job to align ourselves with humanity and trust that beings will.

Amen God punish those He loves.Psalm 52:9 O Lord, I will praise you forever and ever for your punishment.Revelation 3:19 I continually discipline and punish everyone I love, so I must punish you unless you turn from your indifference and become enthusiastic about the things of God.Heb 12: 5-11 And have you quite forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you, His child,He said ,My son ,don't be angry when the Lord punishes you.Don't be discouraged when He has to show you where you are wrong. For when he pusishes you, it proves that He loves you. When He whips you, it proves you are really His child.Let God train you, for He ie doing what any loving fatherdoes for his children. If God doesn't punish you when you need it,as other fathers punish their son's, then it means that you aren't really God's son at all, that you don't really belong in His family, but God's correction is always right and for our best good, that we may share His Holiness. Being punished isn't enjoyable while it is happening, it hurts, but afterwards we can see the result, a quiet growth in grace and character.

According to Jesus, are we to preach hope and healing to all the nations? Here is what Jesus himself said we are to preach:
“This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and REPENTANCE for the FORGIVENESS IOF SINS will be preached in HIS NAME to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem."
The forgiveness of sins IS salvation and it comes from repenting in Jesus' name according to Jesus himself, who tells us it is what we are to preach to all nations.
