At this past Awesome Games Done Quick, $1,025,000 was raised for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. It only took a week of continuous streaming, 18,000 donors, and many many runners to achieve. A big thanks to everyone responsible for these amazing numbers, what a humbling achievement. For comparison, last year's event raised just under $500,000.

For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.

It put me off how much the runner seemed to dislike the game as well as the lack of strategy that goes into speedrunning the game. Mr. Driller is designed to be an arcade game and there's a lot more strategy in it if you're trying not to die. It may just be that it's not a good game for speedrunning - it's certainly not awful as a casual arcade game.
I meant bad a speedrunning game, I know I didn't make it clear, along with a lot of other things. I was really nervous.
It is a good speed running game... as long as you don't give yourself all those insane buffs. That version is simply designed to allow you to grind items (that you can turn off) to make the game super easy.

At the time, I was going only for speed which the items did (especially the driller faster one), and i figured if i have one on, I might as well use them all. I realize it wasnt as entertaining as an itemless run, but I feel like it sped up the run which was the initial goal (looking back I should have done slower + no items but I cant change it)
jarvitz You said it should be on awful games done quick..so no you didnt mean bad for speedrunning you clearly made your dislike for the game apparent.
+Dara a (late to the game here but) I doubt he'd run the game (much less blindfolded) if he really hated it because there would be no point to putting the practice in.

i know how to play it fast and good and due to how he explains the game and how he plays and what he does i can say he is not a pro in the game but good enough to reach ataru
30:51 Poor guy at the end there "I saw his hand first", and he got up and ready to play the game at the runner's request, then "You know what, let's get blue glass up here! (Because you are a no body!)" That's so.... disrespectful....
This game is full fledged fun. It's a challenge at first to dodge falling blocks that may crush you as you are drilling your way to victory, but you begin to get quick in speed and build up fast finger work. Playing out of six playable characters makes the game obsessively fun and gives you more variety to the game.
I like the irony of a charity event for the prevention of cancer showcasing a Mr. Driller playthrough that's pure cancer.
Mr. Driller's great, this guy's just an awkward jerk. Take off the max lives and use the standard guy, that'll be a run worth practicing/watching.
Coming up in AGDQ 2015: nail-biting action as Jarvitz attempts to beat Contra with only 30 lives! *gasp*

Hahaha, I laughed when I read this. It's so true. This is honestly one of the worst speedruns I've ever watched, quite possibly the worst. It's clear the player doesn't have any tangible skill at the game (and even wastes time by dying or waiting for air to drop instead of cancelling the blocks and letting the air drop as he descends). Truly an awful showcase of an amazing game.

Why is there always an incentive for killing or saving the animals? I thought it was only for super metroid that one time. Or has it become some sort of running gag?
Mario Mastar So it's ok to kill people and jump on turtles in video games, but not to let the animals die? Not even for $7000 for charity? I suggest you don't watch the Link's Awakening video, you'll be crying for weeks when you see what happens to the NPCs at the end of that one.
djpheeze The problem is that the $7000 is moot point if the lives we're saving are the same lives that would be just as willing to pluck a bullet into an innocent's skull. After all, what's the point of saving one life (espeically through green paper transfer) if it costs 20 lives do to so? To really bring home the value of life, which is what this charity is all about, we have to know that the people who are donating or even running the thing are actually dedicating their time to saving ALL innocent's lives they can, not just a specific group while the rest can burn. Otherwise, would it be wrong for me to raise thousands of dollars to kill cancer patients so that I can open an animal shelter?
That's my problem. If cancer patient's lives are valued to the point that the death of animals can be used as a humorous incentive to get people to pay, then we're not solving a problem, we're just adding to the plague. It's idea of "problem solving" is the equivalent of going to a desert and giving a guy a glass of water, then leaving him to find more for himself. He's going to get thirsty again and eventually die. It's a temporary solution.
And yes, that's the reason why I can't play Link's Awakening. I know what happens, and it does leave me feeling really depressed.

djpheeze Nah, I care about all lives. I just don't like how there's an incentive for killing one life over another. I just prefer if they removed the donation incentive or replaced it with, "If you pay X amount, we will...keep pikachu alive." Something with a more positive message. :)
Sorry for the strong retaliation, but that's just kind of the way I saw it. If the donation incentive WAS to allow cancer patients to die for the sake of sounding bad@ss on a video game stream, that would be just as messed up. See what I mean?
djpheeze Maybe I am, but really more so a guy who's just sick of people being cruel to each other to the point that I don't really care who lives and who dies anymore. After all, to survive is to remain a slave to society's standards where a guy could pluck a bullet into you because you looked at him funny, and to die is to cease being mobile in this world, but no longer feel anything, not even pain. Either the whole world learns to get along, or life is a pointless struggle, cause we're all going to die anyway, so why spend life making others miserable?
and yes, that includes those who take pleasure in slaughtering fictional animals. Stupid as that may sound, it's just a testament to how people enjoy watching others suffer. Those people don't value life except for their own, and if they have to lose what they value most to make this world more tolerable, then by all means.
Course, the internet is a great place to realize the value of human life really is hardly higher than null cause so many people admit to wanting to destroy lives for amusement. So yes, maybe I'm a psychopath, but if humanity wants to blow up the world and end all life as we know it, then by all means. They've caused enough suffering, they'd be doing us a favor.

Why do a run of the pure RNG mode and not the preset time attack stages?
Same reason the Minecraft block uses a pre-made seed instead of loading up the game randomly and showing the runner's skills.
It's a system that donate's hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight cancer, yet has a donation drive to "kill animals" (virtual or not, sending really mixed messages here). SDA has it's share of irony.
Minecraft doesn't have a "Speedrun Mode" though. Mr. Driller: Drill Spirits totally does. They have a "Time Attack" mode.

Hehe, I was joking about the Minecraft part (basically a case of "THey did it for case A, but didn't for case B".)
The second part...it's just something that bugs me about almost every SDA video. Especially these latest ones. At least in the last run, Bonesaw was always there to support saving them. File names, Hardcore runs, no deaths...that's all fine and dandy, but paying money to "kill animals". That's just messed up even if they are virtual.
Mario Mastar well the "kill animals" actualy come from the "save the animals" which they would not even do normaly
Because running the Time Attack stages would require practice and skill.

Playing the game on a handheld port + janked with all these aids on and still loses lives. What a waste of everyone's time. The runner needs to leave this game to someone who appreciates it and can play it. And maybe use the original arcade port to DC or PS1 which also has a time attack mode that could be a different category.
