It’s not uncommon with Garth’s music. No one blames you, I’m sure. You do a good job.
Just lurking here, but had to log on when I saw you refer to this as a cover. I work here in the industry in Nashville and I can tell you with certainty that this is Garth on vocals. I'll send him this link; maybe he'll pop in himself and set the record straight. (But I expect he'll just laugh.)

This is one of the few songs that Garth actually did a video for, but that still doesn't make it easy to find. A good companion to this is Reba McEntire's "If I Had Only Known". Same sentiment, but less metaphor.
This is not a cover
One of my favorites- all genres. My dance was with my husband. We met in high school and were together for 48.5 years until he lost his battle with 10 yrs of stage 4 colon cancer. I picked him up from chemo one afternoon and he was in tears. The woman with breast cancer next to him was talking to her friend about her husband walking out on her and the kids because he couldn't take it. He held me close and said he was so grateful that he knew I would be there. Next month I've have lived for 6 yrs without him. We had a wonderful life - sometimes poor, sometimes middle class but always taking time to smell the roses and do the things we loved. I couldn't have had a better life with the best person I've ever known. Guess God wanted him back. I could have missed the pain but I'd have had to miss the dance.
The "Dance" is a metaphor for life. If you ever get a chance to see the official video, do it.
Garth brooks is single-handedly the best concert I have ever experienced. He’s such a consummate performer. Every song he sang was like listening to him on album, minus the overwhelming roaring of the crowd singing ever word in unison. What a concert!
Same. Garth threw the best party I’ve ever been to (well, me and a few thousand of his closest friends). 😄
I hope people realize the “dance” isn’t just about that one night under the stars. It’s about an entire compilation of memories and experiences. This is played at many high school graduations and even at funerals. It’s saying the entire experience was worth it, even though it’s sad after it’s over.
For me this song is always about dancing with my baby son in my arms, making him laugh, but the child who later in his life we lost. If I'd known that would happen, would I still have married and had him? ABSOLUTELY. The gift of him was worth everything. Love you still, Kevvy.

My husband who was a Veteran, lost his cancer fight 5 months ago. We spent 22 years together and I would never have missed the dance.
My DIL’s brother, who was 17, told his parents if anything happened to him he wanted this song and Alabama’s Angel Among Us played at his funeral. He was in a horrendous auto crash shortly after and died 2 weeks later. Both songs tore our hearts out.

I have a Garth brooks autograph baseball. He played in the minor league with the NY Mets. He met fans every day, would talk to ppl on the phone. My brother would sit with him and talk bout how his wife had an addiction problem and Garth told my brother about his upcoming divorce, and how he fell in love with Trish yearwood. My brother couldn’t believe how down to earth he was, also my brother had no clue who is was because he hate country music.but he’s a big fan of garths
My wife and I while dating loved his song Shameless. She passed in August 2022 from viral pneumonia. So this song touches me deeply. I'm so happy we had the "dance", but I still cry several times a week, missing her.
I’m terribly sorry. I lost my wife a year and a half ago, and I still think about her everyday. Most days are manageable, but things will still trigger me. And that’s okay. I have to believe we will be reunited some day. I’ll say a prayer for you and her.
This song helped me through the loss of my husband of 30+ years (friends for 36+ years). I lost him in 2020, the pain was suffocating especially watching our only child suffer. BUT realizing that we're all going to loose or be lost to our loved ones helped me appreciate "The Dance" that was our life. I wouldn't change a thing, I'd still pick him so "I'm glad I didn't know" and just loved, laughed and lived daily.

This song puts life in perspective when you lose someone. I had 42 years with my husband before he passed. The dance goes on through our children and grandchildren. So sorry for your loss. So grateful for Garths beautiful song!

This song always meant a lot to me. As you grow older you appreciate it more with each passing year.
I remember the official music clip for this that was played on CMC, Garth makes a very beautiful statement at the end, I will never forget it, he says... "You know, I never compared myself to the folks that are seen in this video, but if for some reason, god forbid I should leave this world unexpectedly, then I hope they play The Dance for me, because I mean that's it, I could of missed the pain but I would have to miss the dance... And I wouldn't miss this for the world"
No worries! It's not your fault. A lot of reactors have thought this was Garth as well.

I lost my best friend in '15 and used this song as a reference in the eulogy I gave for her service. So many good times we shared and her loss was more than I could bear. If I hadn't opened my heart I would not have felt the pain of losing her. But I would not have all the wonderful memories. Rest in Peace, my dearest friend

this is one of those songs that have been played at 4 of the most loved people's funeral in my life my sons my father-in-law and both of the men that raised my 😢

Garth did not write the lyrics to "The Dance". Tony Arata wrote them. Garth heard the song when he was at a little place in Nashville called The Blue Bird Cafe. Tony was there and was singing The Dance, and Garth fell in love with the lyrics, but did not yet have a recording contract, but he still talked to Tony, and asked Tony if he was planning on recording it, or if he was trying to pitch the song out to other Artists. Tony was trying to pitch it out to other Artists, but no one was really interested in it at the time, so Garth asked Tony to hold onto it for him, and if he ever got a recording contract, he would gladly record it. As we all know, Garth did get a Recording Contract, and The Dance was one of the Songs that he recorded on his very first Album titled Garth Brooks. The album was released in 1989, and became one of Garth's many major hits. It's a song about the loss of loved ones. It's also the song that Garth closes out all of his shows with before the encores.

@@heidifruchtl354 I got my info directly from Garth himself. I used to have a DVD that told all about Garth, long before he ever went to Nashville, back when he was still in Oklahoma. It talked about the Band he formed out there with a group of guys, and the name of the Band was Santa Fe. It also told how Garth actually went to Nashville twice to try and score a record deal, with the first time being in 1985. He was actually talking to a record label exec in his Office when an aspiring singer knocked on the door, and asked to borrow $700.00 from the exec, and Garth said that he made that $700.00 per week playing night clubs in, and around Oklahoma, and the Record Exec then told Garth to go back home, and Garth did go back home less than 24 hours after arriving in Nashville. Then it went on, and explained how, and where Garth met his first Wife, Sandy Mahl. It was Sandy who talked him into making another attempt at Nashville, and he went again, in 1987, and this time, he stayed in Nashville, only because Sandy kept telling him that he had what it took to make it big, but he had to wait it out until his turn came up. And that's when the Bluebird Cafe thing happened with Tony Arata. Garth had already been writing, and he had co written another one of his hits called "IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES", and had performed it earlier that sane evening at the Bluebird. It was that night that a Record Label Exec from Capitol Records Nashville was sitting in the audience, and the next day, Garth was signing on with Capitol Records Nashville. He had asked Tony Arata if he was planning on recording "The Dance" or if he was trying to pitch it out to other Artists.. Tony wrote it in hopes of someone like George Strait would record it, but no one else, including George was interested, so Garth asked Tony if he could have it if he got a record deal, and Tony let him record it on his very first album. That's the story I heard as told by Garth himself.
My late husband was on tour with Led Zeppelin. He took me to see Garth Brooks and he said Garth was a better concert. I still miss my husband. I wouldn't want to miss the pain of him passing because I wouldn't be a part of us loving each other.

You right it is hard to get his music. Even this is just lyrics with another singer singing it. I went to his concert at LSU Stadium. It was awesome. I could feel this stadium shaking under my feet.
I think you'd really enjoy his song, We Shall Be Free. It's a timeless song, that we can all agree that we wish it had a time to not be needed any longer.

Written by Tony Arata in 1986 It was turned down by Everyone for 3 yrs Garth had told him If I ever get a record deal I'm going to record that and in 1989 He did and made it his Tony didn't even recognize it when Garth played the album for him He even said man I love that song I wish it was mine... LOL He didn't recognize it because it had only been a demo with piano and guitar for 3 yrs It Took Garth to give it Life. I thought that was pretty darn cool.

I lost my sister when I was 18. She committed suicide but was found in time to be resuscitated and put on life support. We had to make the decision to turn off the machines because she was brain dead. She was 25 and had a beautiful 3 yr old boy. It was the right decision and I knew that in my head, but I couldn't make my heart understand. I felt guilty for giving up on her. Every time I thought about her, all I could remember was that one decision. The only memory I could see was her lying in that hospital bed hooked up to all those machines. For two years, I couldn't get past it. Then one day I was driving and trying to find a radio station. I didn't listen to country music then. I stopped on a station that was on a commercial. The song that came on next was Garth's The Dance. I had to pull over because I was crying so hard. Not because I was sad, although I was. I was crying because all of the good memories of my sister came rushing back. This song gave me back my memories of my sister. There's never been a song that has meant more to me than this one. And I know it means just as much to so many people. It's an incredibly powerful and emotional message. It's hard to go through the pain in the end, but the journey and all its' special moments are definitely worth it. Thanks for reacting to this one. You made my day today 😊

Songs like this link all of us, because we've all been there. Whether a dear one passed away or walked out of your life, makes no difference, it was the journey with that person that mattered. The depth of pain is a direct reflection of what they meant to me, so bring it on, because they were worth every ounce.

I wish you could see the video. It had clips from the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, and several others that were gone too soon. Maybe someone can help out with others that were shown in the original video. Would they have made the choices they did if they had known how it would all end? It is a great song. Another you should listen to is "Unanswered Prayers."
You spoke so well on the meaning. I've lost my parents, 24 aunts and uncles, 6 cousins, 2 sisters, and my 36 yo neice last Christmas. You go through stages, as we all do, but listening to this song, it makes you grateful for the time ive have had with such a huge loving family. Memories are beautiful. ❤

This is my tribute song to my husband, who just drank himself to death after our divorce, and I will never get over the guilt of that however, if you’ve ever heard the song whiskey lullaby, that is the tale of our lives.

This song gets played a lot at memorial services and funerals with a video or slideshow of the person being honored and all the things they loved doing in life

I was married for 17 yrs and my ex had an affair and left me and our son. Just disappeared...I had no idea where he was. No note, phone call, nothing. I almost died over it all. Then this song came out and I listened to it a lot. Would I have changed anything, I really don't know. I loved him so much and the damage to our son was irreversible. So except for my son being born maybe the dance wasn't worth the pain.
