That is a terrific ride! When we were there, I took a tour they had of their steam shop and their car shop. From the questions I was asking, they knew that I knew a lot about the steam locomotive and they took me on a nice private supplemental tour of an engine upon which they were working at the time. I got to go into the smoke box and the fire box and see them bead over the ends to seal the tubes, etcetera. In your video here, it sounds like 480 is having some valve timing issues. They showed me how they do that also. For me, that was the most wonderful trip, ever! Thank you for helping me reminisce!! You got me excited all over again!!
They are nice people and a great shop. I hear people bad mouth Durango for no access to the shop. Really? Yes, they charge to take a tour. No wandering around like at some shops. But this is better. Because they are there telling you what’s going on and as you say when they know you have interest in their work, they are so great about walking you through it. Showing everything.

Yes. I rode this train in 2005. Bought the Parlor car when it was about 90 bucks. Round trip. Got video. Lots. Each time i watch it.....it's breathtaking. Your right....once in a lifetime. Enjoy!
Nice very nice. That scenery is spectacular and steam just makes the scene perfect!!! John Allen's famous Gorre & Depheited model railroad obviously got inspiration from this region.
@@ToyManTelevision I really enjoyed the stuff on Otto Mear. I'd love to see more about him and his railroads. Great stuff incredible scenery too. As the old saying goes "glorious scenery is the nightmare for any railway engineer" obviously it didn't scare him off!
What a beautiful line, Lovely yellow coaches, so cheerful! One day when I travel around the world to the best tourist steam railways I be sure to add Durango and Silverton to my list!
By the looks of the orange water, you must have went on it shortly after the mine spill. What a mess that was. Love the video, I just moved out of Colorado and I miss it.
Great video, Dale! Great photography and great music, too! (I can tell you have a favorite there!). I've got to go there. I knew Leo Campbell well (of Campbell Scale Models). I had my furniture shop in his shop. He lent me space. But I never made it to Durango when he moved there. I'd call him now and then but he died before I got there. Now Durango is like Beverly Hills I hear.
I lied. I was there. In late 1966 I was in college in Flagstaff and some of us went to Durango to ski. We stopped by the roundhouse but everything was closed up. It almost looked abandoned. Nothing of interest could be seen, and no one but me gave a hoot. I'll be back, I said.
66 Was a bad time there. The D and RG was TRYING to close it down, trying to make people go away. I have 40 minutes of video wit Robert Richardson who explained it. Amazing story. 66 was the worst.

The diesels they have can't pull a train up the grade. Great for switching. They are looking for several road engines to do that with. But many fans are against it thinking they will stop running steam. D and S says, no, jus when the fire danger is high. Never again will we be the cause of a major fire. SO, D and S will shut down and cancel all trips when the fire danger is high, OR buy 5 or 6 diesel road engines. Im in favor of the diesels. I doubt they would ever stop steam as thats what people com to see. BUT Grand canyon did.... so?
@@ToyManTelevision that's kinda funny the Steam Engines can pull more then the engines that replaced them, and your right people keeped going to the Grand Canyon Railroad even with diesels, same with steamtown pennsylvania my home state they only have 1 steam and that's a switcher for the Baldwin Locomotive Works when they were in business by the way great work on the channel
Did you hear that not that long ago the Animas river there was turned almost completely yellow? There was an accident in an old abandoned mine up in Silverton, where some workers were doing some stuff, and there was a spill. I could see that there were a few spots of yellow still in the river from the video.
