Why do people always say you have to go to the desert to find yourself? I lived in the Mojave desert for 40 years, it doesn't work. If you want to find yourself go to the forest, not some God forsaken desert.

Why do people believe they have to go out into the wild to be able to find themselves? Finding yourself only requires you to do some introspection and self-questioning, this is something you can do in the safety of your own home without needing to put yourself in a potentially dangerous situation.
I understand wanting to go out and experience the wilderness simply for the sake of it, but I just cringe when I see people talking about wanting to go out to find themself or whatever, as if 'themself' is something that can be found anywhere in this physical realm. I think what these types of people are really looking for is some peace and quiet along with a break from the rat race, this can be achieved with far less drastic and risky measures.

Did a six day hike in Namibia, a country in sw Africa. We were compelled by law to do it in winter bc temperatures were too high in summer.
An arid region, not full desert, but in close proximity to the Namib desert. Even then, temps would soar up to over 30 degrees Celsius during the day.

Correction the largest canyon in the world is Kali Gandaki Gorge in Nepal .and the Yarlung Tsangpo Canyon in Tibet is the second largest Canyon, and the Colca Canyon in Peru is the third largest. And even the Copper Canyon is larger than the Grand Canyon. And there are several more that are deeper than the Grand Canyon like the Hells Canyon that is almost 2,000 feet Deeper. And it's not the widest either. The Grand Canyon is the largest Gourge in the world.

  • @AnthonyTownsend-w5y

Best way to survive the deadly desert is to not go into the deadly desert in the first place. "finding yourself" has nothing to do with being in the desert or being atop the Eiffel Tower. If you are of the mindset where you feel you have to go to the desert to find yourself, you will never find yourself, anywhere.

Man, that German family was such a sad story. I feel bad for the kids and the wife. I don't mean to sound harsh but how dumb do you have to be to take an off-road DEATH VALLEY trip on a mini van. Maybe just a lapse of judgment but it's very unfortunate that all those lives lost due to blatant stupidity. Hopefully their story prevents the death of any other innocent person but, is unfortunate that it played out that way nonetheless.
