    Ishi learned to knapp from his elders and his notching relfects his culture, very similar to the Wintu culture which have similar notches.....

    Perfect size for an atlatl dart ,I started doing the narrow entry notches and I really like them , I don't do corner notches just because we aren't allowed to hunt with then here in Missouri with a barb , so I just use side notches and a tail notch or cupped base , great video thank you

    @MrPaluegoestarde You are welcome, glad you like the videos. Texas is flint heaven, so I'm guessing that part of Mexico probably is rich in flint resources also. Flintknapping is a great hobby, have fun amigo....jim

    I believe you have answered this in someone else' s comment.
    Thanks.
    The answer: possibly deer ulna, turkey bone or an unknown tool. I wonder if anyone was able to witness this older method and document it. I haven't read or heard about it but such literature would be a treasure.

      Awesome, the old boys had mad skills!

  • @paleomanjim
    @paleomanjim  15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, probably 1/8" or so. Thinness is very important for narrow entry to the notches.

    How would this type of notching be done without steel or metal tools?
    In would like to know what method is used with more primitive tools made before colonial times.

    Hey, I was about your age when I started and found some people that lived near me and got in touch. Also look for knap in's that are in your area. You will find many materials there.

    • @paleomanjim
      @paleomanjim  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if anyone sells these anymore. You can make one with a horseshoe nail, takes a bit of time to make the tool but worth it and the nail is easily replaced

      +Ryan Hunter it`s a bit thick what this video does not show you is just how damn thin his point is anything thicker then lets say bottle glass is going to be extremely hard to do this to.

  • @paleomanjim
    @paleomanjim  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    thats anyones guess, perhaps a deer ulna, turkey wing bone, or something unknown. Whatever it was it it had to be hard and tough....

      @stephenwalther9702 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      paleomanjim Ever seen the top fin of a catfish? Ones from a smallish (one lb. or so) fish has a needle thin point, bu is tough enough to drive into hardwood! I was unlucky enough to get one buried to the hilt in my butt by unwittingly sitting down in it in the grass where someone had topped it point up. Had to have it surgically removed due to the numerous barbs in the shaft!
