I like how every singer that covers this song puts their own spin of how the pain and yearning in the song should be presented. And every single damn cover really does allow me to feel the pain. I think that's also why the audience would always cry, regardless of the cover or the singer. The lyrics and the tune are just... depressing. The inevitable separation of a pair and the wishful hope for a next life's chance to reunite. It's just beautiful. The pain is beautiful.

People may not have to agree on her version of the song, but they have to agree that her vocals are pretty superb. The original will still and always be #1 in my books, but her spin on it isn't bad. If it was covered the exact as the original, it would have been boring. I think she did the song justice in her own way.

You should hear the original by Lee Sunhee. She wrote this song soon after her husband's death and every time I hear her sing this, I legit cry.

This is definitely my favorite version of this song. Vocally she's a monster and that's very obvious. But I love how she made me feel certain things throughout. She conveyed the first part of the song like a two secret lover happily meeting in the Joseon era, and towards the end of the song it became a tragedy (with the instruments and her vocals coming together with so much emotion). I instantly got those scenes in my mind as soon as she started singing. A vocal legend indeed.

옛날에 월드 탑클래스 배우 비비안 리를 설명하는 말로 이런게 있었는데 '비비안 리 같은 실력있는 배우에게 저런 미모는 필요가 없을 것이다. 그 실력이 묻힌다.' 대충 이런 것이었음.
내가 보기엔 소향님이 딱 그 말이 어울리는 것 같음. 분명 감성과 영혼을 노래에 충만하다 못해 넘쳐흐르게 담아내시는데, 세계 최고 수준의 가창력과 고음, 음색이 그 감성을 묻어버리는 경향이 있는 것 같음. 그래서 까는 사람들이 하는 말이 '가창력은 엄청나지만 소울이 안느껴진다' 뭐 이런 소리나 운운하는거고. 분명히 소향님의 노래엔 듣는 이에게 전하는 폭발하는 감정이 녹아있음. 그런데 너무나도 뛰어난 실력과 완벽한 고음이 음악적 지식이 없는 일반 청자에게는 오히려 그 실력이 노래에 담긴 감정을 마음으로 직접 부딪혀 느끼기엔 부담을 주는 것 같음... 물론 나도 음악에 대해선 문외한이지만 그런 생각이 종종 들 때가 있음. 소향님의 기막히게 완벽한 실력이, 세계 최고 수준의 고음이 사람들에게 감정을 전달하는 데에 장벽이 되어서 자꾸 억까를 만들어내는 것이 아닌지를.
전혀 그런 터무니없는 비난을 들으실 분이 아닌건 사실 모두가 알거임. 감히 누가 이 분을 노래로 비난하고 평가질하겠음? 그럼에도 불구하고 이상하리만치 소향님 영상에 그런 댓글이 다른 국내 탑티어 가수들 영상에 비해 많은건 그게 원인이 아닐까 함. 대중적으로 쉽게 접할 수 없는 너무 대단한 실력이 일반인에게 주는 미묘한 거부감... 그리고 본진이 ccm가수라는 살짝 대중적이지 않은 감성이 노래를 노래 그 자체로 평가하지 못하게 만들고 소향님에 대해 억지 비난을 하게 만드는 것인듯.
하지만 복면가왕에 나왔을 때처럼 친숙하고 대중적인 곡을 부르신 것을 자주 들어보면 다 편견이고 이 분은 정말 여러 평론가들이 말하는 것처럼 세계 정상급 가수이고, 이분이 한국에서 노래를 불러 주신다는게 감사하다고 느낄 거임. 정말 한국 가요계에 있는 최고의 보석이자 거장 아니실지...

omg this was very beautiful that people even cried during the performance! I love how she turned this into her own style instead of how the original singer sung it. Both are elegant and beautiful! I'm not saying So Hyang was better or that the original was better. She brought out the same emotions with her voice and style and did not rely on the original's style to sing this song. I've seen plenty of covers of this song because that is how great this song is. It's very hard for people who are covering to bring out the full emotions behind the lyrics and song. So Hyang did lovely though.
