    Last month I discovered the "Vernon Subutex" trilogy by french feminist author Virginie Despentes. And it's f*cking awesome.
    It's a bit Kerouac-esque, but way smarter & without misogynistic ideologies hold by the author (but definitely hold by the characters in the book).
    It's a wonderful punk-drug-capitalist-communist-hateful-sex-pain mess. And Virginie Despentes is such a great person.

    • @helenadelapena8678
      @helenadelapena8678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Despentes literally says in one of her books (King Kong Theory) that feminists want the abolition of prostitution because they are ugly prudes who are afraid that their husbands will leave them for prostitutes that are prettier than them 😅 She is marketed as a feminist but I don’t think she is one. She’s just a rich girl that meddled in sex work for a while cause it looked fun and when she got bored of it she stopped without stopping to analyze the condition of most women in prostitution and why it even exists in the first place.

    • @antifantastisch4467
      @antifantastisch4467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@helenadelapena8678 I haven't read the King Kong Theory yet, will do it soon though.
      Every thing I've read from her makes her sound like a very non pretentious, non elitist down to earth feminist.
      I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt, that this was a joke.
      She was raped at the age of 17 and said her sexwork gave her the control of her sexuality back.
      As well as earning more than by working at Lidl.
      That doesn't sound to me like a rich girl doing it for fun.
      btw I'm against the abolition of prostitution, there's a hole sexwork positive branch of feminism.

    In comparison to your mammoth reads, my recommendation might feel minuscule, but my favorite read of the month was Zadie Smith’s Intimations. This is a collection of six or so essays written at the beginning of the pandemic from Zadie’s perspective as she grapples with the drastically shifting tides. It lived up to its namesake, it was intimate and lovely and welcoming and reflective; I didn’t think I had any interest in reading about the pandemic (this may be the only exception), but her masterful use of language made me feel understood in a way I haven’t by many books recently. I would certainly recommend to anyone!

    Just finished the Bloody Chamber, a superb collection. The first story achieved more gothic horror in 40+ pages than Mexican Gothic achieved in over 300 pages. Totally agree about the assessment. This collection might only be just over 140 pages but the stories are so rich and descriptive.

    Thank you another great video. My favorite book for October was Infinite Country by Patricia Engel. You recommended that one! Thank you so much! I also enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. Thank you for your videos and I can't wait to read some of the books you recommend today. 😊 have a wonderful day

    I haven't heard anything good about the Maidens. Unpopular opinion but I thought The Silent Patient was not great either.

    Lmao your Maidens rant 😂 I am currently reading The Silent Patient and am really enjoying it, so it’s super disappointing to hear that The Maidens is…not good

    King Lear was my first Shakespeare play and ngl it made me much more intimidated by Shakespeare than I needed to be.

    idk if any other people have said/asked for this, but I would absolutely love if you did a video discussing different essays/essay topics that you've written! hearing you talk about writing essays on Paradise Lost just made me yell at the screen "TELL ME WHAT THE TOPIC IS" and I would love a whole video discussing different essays you've written!

    For manga that I think you would enjoy, I HIGHLY recommend Witch Hat Atelier! It follows a young girl named Coco who's dream is to become a witch and is introduced to the world of magic. The artwork is STUNNING and I think you would really enjoy it. I also recommend Blue Period (which is about a boy who's love for art is awakened), Yona of the Dawn (an insanely good historical fantasy/romance), Blue Flag (follows four friends in their last year of high school and has a love quadrangle including queer characters) and Kimi ni Todoke: From Me to You.

    If you like worldbuilding footnotes in fantasy books, you should check out the Zamonia Series by Walter Moers. It's the most amazing german fantasy series/world. The english translation seems to be great as well.
