Egon’s literally traumatized by the boogeyman and that breaks my heart since he’s my favorite. I remember in the 2009 video game when he made a side comment like “I’m conducting an experiment where I sleep on average 14 minutes a night” so he can be more productive. I think there’s a correlation between that and his past trauma.
Agreed---if I hear "boogeyman" (or "boogieman" as it sometimes was on the show) I automatically think of this incarnation. Nothing else comes close. It's so warped and exagerrated and twisted, the way a child sees things.
Trust he is...And he eats small children that contains fear (well actually ghost or not any ages everyone or anything that contains fear that will be on his menu)

This episode effed me up when I was 5 years old. So many things were freaky in this one scene. The random alarm clock laughing... the closet lighting up like Poltergeist... Boogeyman's evil grin/Boogeyman's raspy voice... Egon looks legitimately scared... the proton beams have no effect... and he escapes back into the closet shutting the door. Lol, what a way to terrorize the kids watching and your four lead heroes in the cartoon. Boogeyman is way up there on my list for freaky/badass cartoon villains. ;)
For sure Carnage, I think at the end of the 80's that's when I knew that forever I would be a fan of the best of villains. Nothing like a good terror to haunt you as a kid, to remember as an adult. ;)
When they showed his face my heart jumped and then I suddenly realized that this traumatized me as a kid and I blacked it out. That whenever I thought of the Boogeyman, I'd see this face but had no idea where it was from. Man they fucked with our heads when we were kids.

Actually Peter, my parents had a window in their closet when I was a kid. Twas where they put the AC in the summer months. I remember being so fearful the Boogieman was going to get them because they left the closet door open all summer long.
I wish they had made this (and Samhain) a bonus level in Ghostbusters the Video game. Would’ve been awesome character development for Harold Ramis Egon. 👍

This is why the changed the show to Slimer and The Real Ghostbusters. It was pretty dark in the first few seasons and they wanted to make it more kid friendly. Even in GB2 they were told to change Slimer to make him resemble the one from the cartoon more.

I echo all you guys.. I am 45 and this made an indelible impression as well... LOL. Later on they had to tone it down bc apparently it was criticized as being a bit too hard on kids. IMO it was better on the fist episodes despite how hard it was. Do you all feel the same.

Please make sure you updated that. It's nice to know that you follow the voice actors, too. However, that's kind of what I would expect since you post videos on "Real Ghostbusters".
When i 1st time saw the Boogieman i'm getting chills not only to his voice but his looks too and another fact the Boogieman eats everything or anyone that contains fear ghost or not they super duper afraid of him and there's a part of the when the Jr.Ghostbusters encountered him he almost eat them before the Ghostbusters bust out in the room
The second episode I ever watched and still my favourite!! Unfortunately, the town I lived in could barely pick this up and was grainy and kept switching to B&W and back. Ugh.. But I still wore the tape out and watch on Netflix often.
Say what you will about the wacky character design. But I watched this as a little kid during its original airing. And not ashamed to admit... that voice and line delivery made it hard to sleep at night.

This bastard alone made me sleep with a night light for a few years and that is on top of anxiety issues. Still pretty freaky today, but being older, he's not so scary, especially knowing it's Frank Welker on the other end doing the voice.

If it weren't for the fact I saw the movie, "The Day After" before seeing this, I'd be more terrified of the Boogieman. No No, I was more terrified of nuclear war... or surviving it. Not sure which one is worse.
In this episode or in general? Since it's a kid show, he doesn't do much of anything to the kids. He makes threats and scares them, but he never actually lays a hand on them. I heard in some comic that he killed a kid once to squeeze every last ounce of fear out of him, but the comics I don't think are canon in the cartoon universe. So, as far as the actual cartoon is concerned, Boogeyman actually doesn't do anything to the kids except scare them. The only reason he's so violent is out of retaliation for being attacked by the ghostbusters.
Legends of the boogeyman have a laundry list of things he (or she) does to children who are naughty or do not go to sleep at bedtime. Some say he comes in with a switch to punish children (like Krampus for example). Sometimes the boogeyman is said to drown, kidnap, or even eat naughty children. The way I see it in the two episodes he's in is that he's just a part of growing up and learning to face your fears. He feeds on fear, so as long as he can get that, he returns. Children are ignorant to the world, and therefore the scare factor is purer and easier. Eventually, the children outgrow his visits and he doesn't return. He returns to bother Egon because he openly provoked him, so it's a little more personal.

Boogeyman does appear in the regular Real Ghostbusters comics, though with a totally different color scheme (which does not suit him at all). In those comics though, he scares, I think, a little boy to gain enough power to face Egon. You may have to check for the Boogeyman's Wiki to find the actual sources.
To be honest, this interpretation of the Boogieman is one of the goofiest looking. It's kind of hard to take him seriously with that comically oversized head.
Puh-lease! It doesn’t get more horrifying then Spider-man’s Man-Spider transformation from the Spider-man TAS. I still have nightmares about that since I saw it as a kid.

There was an issue of the RGB comic book by Now Comics that had them face the Boogeyman a THIRD time after a breach in the Containment Grid.

They should have used this episode as the basis for the female ghostbusters movie in 2016. Would have made the movie significantly better.

I was scared of Mumm-Ra from ThunderCats. Second was The Boogeyman. This episode was far far scary.
