  • “Talk About Judy • Dreamers” is the latest in Take The Ring’s theory videos about Twin Peaks: The Return (contains spoilers for all of Twin Peaks, David Lynch’s Hollywood trilogy and The Wizard of Oz). It presents multiple characters-as-dreamers in Twin Peaks theories: a Gordon Cole as David Lynch theory which has roots in pre-internet fan circles, a dark side of Dale Cooper theory based on Tim Kreider’s 2018 essay, and a fresh look at Laura Palmer’s awakening from repressed trauma. This video also takes a step back and views all of us as dreamers with our own interpretations who collectively create the world of Twin Peaks.

The concept of multiple dreamers in The Return makes sense when you consider the possibility that most scenes that take place in The Roadhouse, including all the musical numbers and scenes involving various characters, are all part of Audrey's coma nightmare that she can't escape from.

Seeing Take The Ring in the notifications feels like Birthday and Christmas. Someday there will be a notification of It is happening again, David Lynch and Mark Frost joining on creating another season of Twin Peaks. Lets radiate this back to the unified field so that Lynch will pick it up from there and figure out the need to tell us what's on the missing page through another masterpiece like The Return.

The part where you pointed out that Laura screamed in the original series when the veil dropped and she realized that Bob was occupying her father while he assaulted her made me realize something. Is it possible when she has the exact same realization scream in the return, when she hears her mother's voice while looking at her old house, that Judy is occupying her mother? That explain how her mother did that insane thing with her face and everything, or at least I think it would...

This was a fantastic video, I’ve been bed ridden for 9 days now unable to sit still or prevent myself from going into fits of panic, my throat barely has a needle width gap to breath, I’ve only been able to eat 2 small bowls of soup in 9 days and just generally uneasy because the diagnosis the doctors gave me isn’t adding up and the medicine isn’t working, it’s actually agitating my pain further and giving me new symptoms which are pointing to the bleakest outcome my doctor flirted with but I sat through this entire video and barely blinked with a long hot water bottle tight around my neck, the last 25 minutes and 38 seconds have been the only form of relief I have experienced in what seems like forever squeezed into 9 days & nights.
Thank you so much for this!

@@jefjaegeryeah idk why people hate on it. Everyone’s take is legit on Tp and though some make more sense than others, that’s what’s great about it and I liked Twin Perfects ideas even if I didn’t agree with all of it… I’d never throw hate at him bc he obviously loves TP as much if not more than I do bc damn he put so much time and effort into that! Even this 20 min video took tons of time so a four hour video that’s informative and edited well and humorous and engaging. And contains reasons for every idea he puts forth!… that alone is impressive and deserves applause.
We all love the same series and that is a good thing. We don’t have to agree but we don’t have to throw shade at another creator just bc we don’t like what he thinks the show is about. Personally I thought the flashes on Laura’s face in the lodge being a tv screen was a fkn cool idea.

Twin Peaks is an exquisite and unique gift to the universe from David Lynch, and videos like yours truly do help keep the dream alive. Thank you for all the work you obviously put in to this piece, and for sharing your very convincing interpretations.

I think there is a case for the dreamer (likely Cooper) having killed Laura Palmer, either literally or figuratively.
The dreamer grapples with guilt over her being gone from the dream, everyone saw Laura as this golden perfect being, so creates a dream imagining if she had lived, but its an ugly reality, Laura was actually deeply flawed.
This makes Laura in The Return a tulpa, a copy who has some of her memories, who ceases to exist when confronted with this trauma just like any Tulpa who returns to the lodge.
But who knows, thats the magic of Twin Peaks.

I love your channel and this is my favorite theory by far. This analysis is so well put together, I love how you used clues from Lynch's other works and his infatuation with "dream logic" to explain the story of Twin Peaks. My dreams definitely follow the type of dream logic that Lynch references and it puts a whole new perspective for me on how the story is being told.

Amazing analysis, makes a lot of sense. One of the best commentaries on TP I've seen thus far. I recently watched a video where the presenter spoke about an ancient text (i forgot which one, possibly a Vedic text) that spoke about the Universe running on an infinite loop with minor variations in each iteration. The brilliant series Dark also hinges its narrative structure on this figure 8 repeating loop concept. In that show two separate yet linked universes are created when a scientist tries to reverse the past. Which is pretty much what you described. Dark also has an ambiguous ending; but is more satisfying imho than TP because you need not watch hours of analysis on TH-cam to understand it... regardless i respect Lynch's penchant for mystery.

Welcome back! Good to see new posts by you. Awesome Essay.
For Twin Peaks being a dream, David was asked this question and he replied saying, "no, it actually happened". I think this is the same event where David is on Skype to an audience, on one side of the stage and he is also asked whats happening in Twin Peaks right now and he closes his eyes for some seconds to (im guessing) receiving ideas in real time and then tells the answer.

You hit on a lot of great points. A few clues that the Twin Peaks in part 18 is the real world, as opposed the the idealized dream world from the original series and most of the Return, they gas up at a Valero instead of Big Eds. The house is occupied by the actual homeowner. Everything has a realistic look and feel, instead of the TV-like original quaintness.
And the way Dale/Richard acts is the biggest clue. He's more of a regular guy, less polite, even a little bit like Mr. C.
And you explained perfectly why there's little inconsistencies, like Becky having a car in one scene, and not in another. Theyre caught in an infinite loop where little changes occur but the main story stays the same. This explains all those little odd glitches and time frame issues that didn't add up. Becky's story was full of them but they were all throughout the Return.

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

damn dude, I don't think I caught that about Becky's car. I always say this, BUT I do plan on talking about Becky in another video - there's a lot of those glitch things going on with her storyline. glad you're digging my content!

@@TakeTheRingforgive my lengthy reply. theres just so many questions.
Did something happen to Hawk? Maybe when he found Glastonbury grove? Or visited Sarah? Many clues in his Log lady conversations. (References to when they USE to talk "face to face") Then watch the scene in the station where "Hawk said to meet him here", the way he emerges from his offoce in complete shadow/darkness seems odd. And when Cooper looks at him in part 17 "now, some things will change..." Hawk gives this understanding nod. Something is up with that.
With my most recent viewing i realized. Pretty much every character has these odd implications that make you wonder if theyre dead, part of a dream, etc. Like Lucy still dressing the same, saying she never goes home. Wally seems not real. And he was supposedly born 25 years ago. Like everything ties back to Dales original experience in Twin Peaks, the station seems stuck in 1991, minus a few details. Is Dale always the dreamer?
And Audrey and her extremely bizarre situation needs to be dissected.
'Whos the dreamer' could almost change scene to scene. Was Big Ed dreaming about getting his freedom, and meeting/proposing to Norma? Maybe him eating soup was the depressing real world.
Was the scene where Becky was invited to pie a dream? she had a car and was worried about steven again, after all the chaos we saw.
The scene where shelly, becky and bobby meet in the dinner starts kind of normal but unravels quickly into a nightmare type scenario.
Also the timeline is weird. It seems to jump all over the place. Most scenes have hints as to what day they take place (dates written, moon phases mentioned, watches visible) and it seems to never quite add up. Frost said the show was mostly happening chronologically but im not so sure.
The bleeding drunk in jail, does anyone else see him except the crooked cop Chad? Plus he dissapears as soon as Freddie knocks the cop out. Never seen again. Is he just a manifestation of guilt or something?
Also i wish i fully understood the early episode where Dale should be able to come back in. If Dale went through the original socket, before Naido flipped the switch, where would he have ended up? In Mr. Cs Mercedes/BMW driving? Glastonbury Grove? Was Naido working for Mr C in the muave zone? I still don't even fully understand that whole scene, with the blocked curtains and the arms doppleganger .

@@kevinr.3542 yeah totally, I tried to tease that at the end with showing the shot of Audrey before the waterfall - besides us and the creators, pretty much any character could be considered the dreamer of this story or characters inside another dream. it's an endless game to play in your head - that's why I love it so much and why it's still talked about, I think

God I hope there's a season 4 , and David Lynch is just really being secretive about it. I noticed he recently cut his hair to a more Gordon Cole-esque length. Great work! Thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable!
One thing I found interesting was the number of references to dreaming in The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, which I recently read for the first time. There are numerous examples written by Laura, such as:
I have had nightmare after nightmare and have finally chosen to avoid sleeping altogether.
Sometimes when I'm dreaming I feel trapped there and so frightened.
If only I could stop this fear / Of dreaming that I'm dying
I will not let anyone hurt me, like in the dream. I'll hurt myself first.
I am either dreaming him [BOB] to life, and slowly killing myself, or he has told my parents of his visits and has offered, in return for their own safety, that these visits will continue without possibility of interruption.
I tried to talk to Dad at breakfast and he just sat there twitching, like he doesn't have any extra thoughts [...] Neither one of my parents will talk to me... What is this? Some kind of dream?
[...] I am only doing what I am suddenly used to doing... Creating a show for other people to look at, while inside my head, I go into a dream.
See? You [BOB] are in my head. No one besides you knew the details of my dream of death.
Not sure how canon anyone considers this book, but it's an interesting point of discussion for the topic of dreamers, especially given it was published early on in terms of Twin Peaks material.

I prefer to think of the supernatural elements are truly at play here. Good vs evil. Light vs dark. These characters are in the middle of this battle. But hey that’s just the way I see it. Or rather want to see it. Lynch’s work is open to all interpretations that’s the beauty of it. Still this is a fascinating video and really does make sense from the dream perspective.

I ended up watching the rest of it and I loved it. I remember thinking after it was over that it was the closest any film had ever come to what an actual dream is like. Also just jumping in after it had started and missing the very beginning only added to the mystery and dreamlike quality.

wonderfully done! taking a LOT of elements and squishing them into an actual idea. but, that's always been Lynch's MO (sorry, couldn't resist). I like that he never says "this IS that" or "here and when is where this is really going on". he's been very canny about keeping specifics loose and up to interpretation. never REALLY spelling it out for you, or spoon-feeding you. he'll give you all the options but he never points one way. i truly admire that, and his idea about 'you fill it in, let yrself try to make sense of it, and you might be right, cause i SURE don't know!'. unfortunately, (or fortunately!), i doubt we'll ever truly know, and I, for one, am totally fine w/ that!!! Stan Kubrick left no real questions (mostly), Coppola the same, but, again, that's alright w/ me. take it for what it is/might be/could be/etc. it's still got that 'what just happened???' quality, no matter what! let's keep it that way and keep asking the questions, cause, let's be honest- that's the answer ;)

@@TakeTheRing I've been thinking a lot about Audrey's psychology recently, and have a suspicion that The Secret Diary unlocks her for me (pgs 13; 27-28 in the paperback reprint). Her quiet, lonely idiosyncrasies in the Pilot reflect Audrey's life up to that point - desperate for the love of her family but instead intensely jealous of Laura and her father's continuous attention and love for her over Audrey. After Laura dies, it's almost like Audrey recognizes the hole left behind and seizes the opportunity to fill that in the lives of everyone around her, especially her father. Her greater openness in Season 1 onward, and her desire to "solve Laura's murder", ultimately comes down to her wish to be who Laura was (and is, in the mind of Cooper) in people's lives so she can finally obtain love and acceptance, and the consequences are disastrous. If we assume TR Audrey is trapped in her own head (institutionalized), and Charlie's threat to "end her story too" is Audrey's internal fear about ending up [dead? abused? trapped and miserable?] like Laura, "the story of the little girl who lived down the lane" is obviously that of Laura, specifically the child Laura who got that strange kick out of how she could divert Ben Horne's attention away from his own daughter.

The concept of Twin Peaks being a dream of Cooper's makes sense when expanded upon sure,
But I think even just the fact that Mark Frost is the co creator of Twin Peaks, rather than it being a sole creation of Lynch is reason to discard this theory.
If it was just Lynch, I'd be more open to the idea, but knowing that Frost is the one who was big into the expanding lore of the show in a sci fi/fantasy type sense makes me feel this is more the type of show it is.
I love Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire (and Eraserhead too)
for their dream concepts but I feel like Twin Peaks is just its own thing.
It can be an effective story without it needing to be all a dream too

Nice review i like it. My Lynchian addition to ponder is:
    Harry S Truman + atomic bomb = ?
Is it just writers prerogative or something else. Probably nothing but I'm surprised I've never seen anyone else raise this at least as a curiosity. I like the idea he was reincarnated as a sheriff to solve a mystery related to something he is directly responsible for unleashing upon the world.

Excellent! I would love to see how you would differentiate The Missing Pieces and Fire Walk With Me in this schema - the same hingepoint between the two circles during two different loops? Perhaps one could interpret TMP to be 'canon' to the version of history which Cooper changes by saving Laura and in which Jeffries arrives in 1989 instead of 1988. I am interested in further analysis between these two works and their relationship to everything else bc I interpret TMP as the developmental lynchpin (heh) between the original TP productions from 1989-92 and The Return: shot as part of the original FWWM in 1992 but only edited and released in 2014, reflecting Lynch's later fragmented directorial/editing style we see in The Return, and operating on a very similar emotional level. Contrary to the belief that FWWM was "darker" than the rest of TP, when FWWM and TMP are taken together, the style and content so closely resembles the tonal and narrative variety of The Return.

    • @TakeTheRing
      @TakeTheRing  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

🔥🔥🔥 yes! I agree 100% about TMP relating to The Return. I have some notes jotted down about it - not sure if I'll do a whole video though. but YES - the actual editing, like the long gaps in dialogue and silence/staring between Truman and Andy in TMP is just like TR. AND things like Lucy not understanding the intercom in TMP is literally the same thing as her not understanding cell phones in TR. AND YES, I'm totally onboard with TMP is the missing Jeffries link, the crossroads/intersection of where 1988 (original canon/timeline) meets 1989 (retcon/new timeline) -- great comments! (I do explore this a little bit in my Jeffries video if you haven't seen it 👍)

    • @SoLinkSmash
      @SoLinkSmash 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TakeTheRing Thanks for the quick reply! One example of a scene in TMP that gives me such an impression of TR is the wide shot of the Double R that lasts for a long time, intercut with Shelly going out and in, Nadine/Ed going in and out, and Norma crying in the booth. Or another: the fight between Chet and Cable (and indeed, the whole "new setting" of the Deer Meadow investigation) would fit right into any episode of TR tonally and pacing-wise. Anyway, glad to hear that you've noticed this too and have some notes on it already. Cheers!

FTR, Cooper’s personality was not split into Mr. C and Dougie Jones; it was split into the good Cooper and the bad Cooper. The Dougie Jones we see throughout S3 is a result of measures the good Cooper takes to return to the reality he departed at the end of S2. Maybe a minor quibble, but whatever.

Lynch/Cole is the dreamer, but he is also part of the dream of Dale Cooper. Everything from Part 2 to Part 17 is the dream of Dale Cooper in the Black Lodge. Remember, Mike told him he could not leave the Black Lodge *until* his Doppelganger had returned - and that only happened in Part 17. Dougie is a transcendental projection into a dream world.
The conversations he has in the Black Lodge with The Fireman and Laura Palmer in Part 1 and Part 2 respectively are immediately followed by his reappearance at the end of Part 17. Eg. when in 1989 he is leading Laura Palmer away to safety and she disappears, we see the effect of this in real time in the Black Lodge in Part 2 - she is *also* removed. This makes sense, Cooper has saved her, so why would she be stuck in the Black Lodge anymore? Right after this, Mike asks Coop, "Is it future or is it past?". The conversations with the Fireman too, about "Richard and Linda" and "430", and "listen to the sounds", all have special significance immediately if you see Part 18 as being an immediate follow on from this.
Try and watch the Black Lodge Parts 1 and 2 with Part 18. It makes more sense! I think.

that's what I struggled with when The Return finished too - "it's all a dream" feels like a cop out, right? but like you said, I chose to go deeper and have some fun with it and explore that angle from different characters to Lynch to us as viewers. also, I always try to remember that the Wizard of Oz is all a dream too - and it doesn't really take away from the hero's journey. so, even if it's not real, we experience it with the character as if it was real - so really, what's the difference, you know? thanks for the comment!

I think it's not that Carrie just releases the repressed trauma when Dale takes her home - maybe the doubled scream is that they were there at the same time regardless the year (we're in the loop of 8 anyway). It makes no sense for Cooper to bring Laura home if this is where the evil happens and when her father ends up killing her. Why bring here there? You can't avoid the whole tragedy when you put its victim back in its centre. It seems to me like Cooper was so preoccupied with saving Laura from murder he completely missed the real problem that was happening in the Laura's life to begin with. So yea, I like the idea that then in the end she might be whispering in his year that he (Dale) killed her in this timeline where she was "saved" by him and brought home. After all only Laura knew what really was happening, so only she could tell him who killed her on both timelines. Hence they shared the same dream. A bit messy but I hope it makes sense.
