Check this out. Justinian II from the Heraclian dynasty in the end of the 7th century (Heraclius means hero like the Judges the 7th book in the Bible). Justinian II was kicked out of his kingdom sent to the Khazars and imprisonned there, but he escaped and managed to kill two Kahazar (guards?) along the way and even though he had his nose cut off he returned to his kingdom: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justinian_II?wprov=sfti1

That’s strange because Heraklius’ son Heraclonus was the first to be mutilated in the early 7th century because he was the son of Martina the niece of his father. His father Heraclius remarried to his niece. But the children turned out to be deformed except Constantine who was from his previous marriage. But this fellow actually came back to his throne for like another 6 years. Adonibezek was the first to be mutilated in the Bible in Judges 1 the 7th book.
He came to power at the low point of the empire, he's a reasonable ruler simply for not losing the rest of their territory. The Byzantine's were pretty much a punching bag of the east by this point. Or in simpler terms Arabs/Slavs: "It's free real estate!"
Sounds like Justinian II was a victim of his own lust for revenge at the very end. Gutted his own bureaucracy but was unable to replace them in meaningful ways. He lived by the sword and died by the sword.
