Join Dan as he shares his simple process for creating a strong crackle glaze on a large shallow Bonsai Pot by applying Sumi ink as used by Japanese calligraphers.
That's impressive! I thought the pot was great before, and what a transformation into another beauty! One of my pots from you, again, from Peter Adams, is a crackle white glaze. Now I understand how it most likely was done.
Started making my own bonsai pots. Learning alot from your videos, bought a surface gauge for making a nice flat lips, and a coil clay maker. I'll be in tune for future videos.
Bingo! you got it in one - that's exactly what I strive to do - to respect the clay and let it do its own thing so as not to destroy its inherent character
Thanks Andy - great fun and as much a learning curve for me as for my viewers because so many of the things I was doing this time were all 1sts for me. It's a pity you don't live closer - I'm sure there'd be much we could chat about re pottery etc. Take care my friend and stay safe.
@@danbartonslifewithbonsai745 yes mate my dad was a bookbinder for years so got it quite early. I understand. Think I've got a bit myself. Much love xx
Thanks Dan for another lovely video and thanks for keeping pottery alive! Do you know out of all the lessons in school, pottery was the only one I couldn't wait to get to.
Very interesting method, thanks for the video. However, why didn't you remove the ink on the bottom of the pot? Won't it get all over the garden when it rains?

There's nothing quite like clay - it's a calming medium to work with - thanks for your kind comments.
Very interesting method, thanks for the video.
However, why didn't you remove the ink on the bottom of the pot? Won't it get all over the garden when it rains?
It's not ink on the bottom of the pot - it's an iron oxide glaze - I often treat my pots this way.
outstanding really amazing thanks for sharing
Really love the effects thank you for sharing
Wabi sabi in nature right up my street
@@rsa420 Mine too!
Beautiful work! Where did you get the technique from, or did you develop it yourself?
Thanks for your kind comments - I am completely self-taught.
Dan, you used a water soluble ink. Will this be washed off by rain and regular watering?
Over the years it will, but the crackle will be replaced naturally with time as the pot matures.
How do you get the black wax off?
It's not wax - it's sumie calligraphic ink which is water soluble and washer off quite easily.
