What it's like to be Homeless in America: Homeless from Covid

  • In an hour long interview Alex tells me what it's like to be homeless, how his perspective on homelessness has changed, the many challenges people in these circumstances face, how to maintain a positive mindset, the hyper-aggressive sexual harassment/assault homeless women face, police apathy to the homeless, structural issues in America, and much more.
Thank you Alex for sharing so much with me about this topic and agreeing to sit down to film this interview despite the cold weather and wind, I found it fascinating.

What a truthful interview... I wish all the best to this guy. A persons mind completely changes when put in this situation. Someone that once rolled their eyes or talked down to a homeless person, suddenly becomes homeless and they immediately start singing a different tune.
Humans are so separated from one another, we treat each other like we are all a different species and it's maddening.

Your right. For first time it happened to me and now I'm 1 yr 4 months living in a crappy hotel for 2400 a month. Jan 28th we had a fire so in 2 min in cold Mn winter my 3 sons and I list everything. My oldest was burned 48% of his body(2nd and 3rd degree) and about a week or 2 later covid hit. So now paying that much for a room and $900 in storage fees who can come up with damage deposit,1st months rent and u-haul or moving help at same time paying hotel, storage fees, food, gas etc? It's worse time of my life. I'm not in severe depression which is not good being a single mom who they depend on me( I have no family) both my parents were only children so I never had aunts, uncle's or cousins and now both my parents are gone so literally no family. I try to have hope and faith but it's soooo hard. I can tell you this I've never had depression until now and never had suicidal thoughts daily until now. There's so many more stories out here. People look down on ppl like me now and all from a fire.

In California I’ve met homeless people who are employed and highly educated.
It can happen because of lack of health insurance and medical bills, loss of transportation, divorce, and the high prices due to state taxes and regulations.
I was lucky to rent a bedroom for $800.00 a month.
In California you are not allowed to hand out food because of health and safety regulations.
The panhandlers, however, raised red flags. They were too organized and way too aggressive.

Had a conversation with somebody about the homeless and how they were relieving themselves on the sidewalk. Looked them in the eye and said they likely didn’t have a choice. The folks who sieged the capitol building did and yet they took their feces and smeared it everywhere. It’s really hard for folks who end up homeless to get out of that situation. The video is informative although it was sad to see these young people in that situation.

I was not smoking or drinking alcohol and did not have a gun and stopped ( during the day at a public park) to let my child age four sit in shade and rest after walking all day and eat a peanut butter sandwich. Police immediately arrived and told us we had to leave the park. ( They would not even let my child sit down.) Even if you were a shelter resident you were locked out of the shelter every day and only permitted entry for night shelter. I developed skin cancer.

I'm sure some people, depending on if they were self-employed or whatnot were out of work and out of money because of COVID. Some people might have been making $20-30 an hour, couldn't work, weren't eligible for unemployment, and not wanting to take a job that only pays $12 an hour. It's understandable on one level. Homeless because of COVID.
However, most people I know who were out of work made enough on unemployment+ that they were financially no worse off, some even better.
Crazy that there are more jobs than people looking for them, granted they're mediocre jobs.
I think some people just won't take certain jobs if they are used to a different line of work. Not that taking a $14.00 an hour job in a fast food restaurant is going to get you back into a home once you've lost everything. When it all first started, some people who were out of work could have went to work in retail or grocery before they lost their homes, but they looked down on those jobs. Not saying that was this man's situation, but some people were complaining about being out of work, meanwhile I was working in a grocery store and never lost my home, plenty of open positions, but nobody wanted to apply for them. Or people would start and quit after two days.
I've actually had people tell me they could never lower themselves to take the sort of job I'm doing, even though they were unemployed, they'd rather wait until they can get the kind of job they are accustomed to - because they have a college degree. As if I don't.
Be humble enough to do the work that's available and not what you necessarily think is a job that's good enough for you.
Like I said, I don't know this man's situation, or that taking a job once you're homeless will get you back on your feet, but there are people out-of-work who do look down on those who work in the service industry because they think it's beneath them.
He said that he used to look down on people who were homeless, and it's good that this has humbled him. Could he have looked down on people who work in the service industry? Possibly.

Here in UK the then government introduced a right to buy law which meant that tenants of Council provided and rented social homes (often funded by younger family) could get up to 60% discount on the purchase. In America i believe that there is enough money/wealth That no one should be without food,a home, and health insurance.these 3 things are the basic things someone needs to survive to live to be safe.If the people in power in washington have great paying jobs and live a high on the hog life style off tax payer dallors just like it cost what $200,000 for the president to fly on air force 1 then there is enough money resources for the goverment to provide a home health insurance and enough food for low income disabiled, elderly, children in this country. If they cant help give those things to the ones in this country that need it they need to stop sending the money to other countries to help them until they help there own.if you work or dont you still are a tax payer.Everything you buy you pay taxes on so everyone pays taxes regardless.I am just so fed up with our goverment that we vote into office to help and once they win they end up doing nothing for change where change is needed once elected they turn and put all there time and effort into all the wrong stuff. We need more being done to help pass laws and get more assistance money for housing, food etc.they give out big tax breaks to the rich and cant even give struggling americans more stimulus and help during covid the rebublicans want to claim there is no money to help struggling americans they say its not needed etc etc mean while they just pass laws to give to the rich at the expense of the midfle class and poor. These politicians give big tax breaks only to fill there own pockets because those are the ones who support them and give them big donations to help them get re-elected.The more wealthy you are the more wealth they want its an
Addiction to wealth knowing they have way more money then they can even spend in there life and you cant take it with you when you die thats why i say no one should be without food a roof over there head and health insurance.the rich should soften there hearts and let the greed go and use some of there wealth to help the less fortunate.
I would like to add that it does not help that the goverment has not raised federal minimum wage since what 2007 or 2009 but they raised there own pay senators back in 2007 made $165,200 today they make $174,000 a year.there pay has incresed every year our tax dallors go to pay these people and they lower raxes for the rich give them big tax breaks they dont worry about increses of minimum wages incresing to keep up with inflation cost of living for the poor that shows really what is top priority to the ones in power.Dont get me wrong there are a handful of good ones in the house and Senate but not enough to get whats important and moral and right to pass into law for there to be change in this country to many crooks out vote them.its so sad and i truely believe thats why war against our goverment is already happening the big one is near.the peoples voices are not being heard and we the people have been fed up and want change.

He admitted to his inability to adapt when the jobs he has worked was gone after covid-19 hit. People, there are thousands of jobs put there, programs to help homeless and assistance. A lot of homeless people have a history of poor coping skills and traumatic childhoods which has led them to addiction. Addiction is one reason why people stay homeless and they get caught in a cycle where they can't get out of their situation because of their addiction's. We need to help people find a way to cope without drugs and alcohol. Then we can help end homelessness. And some people actually choose to be homeless so we can't help all of them. I had a cousin who ran away from home because she didn't feel loved, some mental abuse but she ended up on skid row. Come from a wealthy family but her childhood trauma was too much and she ended up drug addicted and using alcohol to cope. She lived like that for about 12 years and finally got herself cleaned up and became an EMS, and had her own apartment. Sadly, she died of a heart attack a few years later from the stress of her choice's.
It boils down to choice's for a majority of these people.
I get depression, self loathing and isolation, but we can't stay in those states of mind. We need to take a chance on ourselves and believe we can make anything possible. A lot of these people actually turn down assistance because they know they won't be able to get their drugs or be able to drink their alcohol in the facilities or temporary housing. Again, a vicious cycle of self perpetrated destruction. Considering our population is almost 350 million people and just over half million are homeless, says a lot about our country. Poverty is a fact, but it's also a choice. Sometimes it's because of our loyalty to family and not wanting to try new things and expand our lives too. Family can be toxic, friends can be toxic and environments can be toxic. We need to get away from those people as soon as possible. Another big reason for addiction of any kind whether it be drugs, alcohol, food, consumerism etc is because of the people we are around. We think if our parents are addicted that it's hereditary or it's predisposed to be like our family, but we can choose to break those cycles and create any life we want, you just have to want it more than your loyalty to toxic people.

You are under the assumption human beings are capable of saving themselves from being lost in life. We can't. No one can. Especially if no one is in your corner. We are social creatures. We need communities, tribes, friends, mentors, family, and partners to survive in this world. You really don't seem to view these people as humans. Given your heartless judgements. Get off your high horse and attempt to hear their stories before you start making assumptions about who they are and why they are where they are.

I divorced abusive spouse. With a felony I could not get work for seven years. He mentioned private prisons. Mafia paid them to detain me and I was abused/starved for two months. All I could do was crawl I was so starved by the prison.

You couldn’t share some of that food with other homeless people? What about this doesn’t make sense to me ?
This guy is definitely not telling the truth. In just 10 mins he’s contracted himself somewhat@ least 6 times and his math and logistics just don’t add up. Didn’t catch it ? Listen to him again . More going on here then he’s letting on . I don’t personally believe he’s homeless but acts the part to obtain donations and whatever $ they are lucky enough to be given while banking their own$. I bet at the end of the day he slinks back home and has a nice chuckle with his “wife” . The interviewer however is awesome. I liked him . Keep up the good work sir .
