    This is the final part of the compilation, so let’s close this case of the Zaibatsu Playthrough of L.A. Noire!!
    || Compiler’s Comments ||
    I put a lot of hefty work into the compilation this time. I mean after all, it is about the length of The Godfather (believe me, I checked), so there might be a lot more edits than usual. Also, there might be some lagged clips. I noticed some before uploading to TH-cam and I had to re-export the video again. I’m sure I got all of them, but if I didn’t and it’s disturbingly lagged please let me know. I’ll look into it and just re-upload it again at a later time.
    THANK YOU ALL ONCE AGAIN. I’m very grateful to this wonderful community for all the compliments and support. I thank those that helped name some chapters, appreciate those that gave suggestions on editing, and everyone else for watching. This compilation turned out better than I expected overall, so I’m proud of myself for bringing you guys good entertainment. I hope you enjoy(ed) this last part.
    Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll hibernate until I decide on what’s next…
    This video contains Parts 36-48 (FINAL) of the LP.

      The big thing I've always overlooked was how Cole's big tragedy from the war was burning all those people in the cave. Then his final desk, not only ending up facing the cowboy, was the arson desk.
      Came to mind when I saw Cole's face describing his "Kewpie Dool" theory. Looked pained.

    I love the argument about Hershal's age, and self-shitting granny wives segment. So much so, I was picturing like, Phelps, Hershal, Pat, Matt, Woolie, and the suspect in question - all in the same interrogation room, as the trio has this extremely weird debate while the others sit in complete awkward silence, along with the rest of the police station somehow hearing everything through the walls.
    Captain O'Donnell probably in his office, disturbed and intrigued, having to stop his confidant pointing practices in front of a mirror.

    So, for those unfamiliar and only have this LP to base their knowledge off of let me explain the backstory.
    Cole Phelps joins WW2 and sees it as a means to distinguish himself. He, at the start, WANTS to be a big war hero, get all the shiny medals, get a big old big big rank and come back home as the Commander Shepard of WW2, because that's what he thinks makes a good soldier, a good man. Throughout bootcamp he's a bit of a tool, his hard work, determination, and ability has him taking on leadership roles and responsibilities exactly as he wanted them. Jack Kelso joins the war more to fight for his country. He doesn't care for accolades or any of that, he just wants to fight the japs so everyone can go home.
    When they leaves bootcamp he serves in the japanese theatre, specifically, Okinawa. Cole and Jack are *not* on the same squad at first. Jack, during basic, joins a rifle company so he can see combat and fight the japs, as per his desires. Cole joins intelligence, he was *supposed* to not have to do any real fighting (it's also probably why he's such a natural detective and knows quite a bit about the espionage stuff when that comes up later). In a desperate gambit, Cole is forced into a combat role, everyone is. A horrible stalemate ensues, atop Sugarloaf Hill, the american soliders take turns holding watch agaisnt the japs. People are dying, screaming, going insane due to it all. Some soliders are doing so bad, they're pained screams are getting to their fellow soldiers. It is hell up there, a hell many soldiers are familiar with. The solution, for those men who are suffering on Sugar Loaf, is to kill them. It's the most humane thing to do. But who WANTS to kill their comrades? Who has the strength to send a friend, a comrade, home in a bodybag by your own hand?
    Kelso does. Cole chastises him for it. Jack challenges him to spend *any* amount of time up there, and Cole *backsdown* like a coward. He should have given the order to retreat a long time ago but now the offensive is committed. He can't leave, and he can't push forward. Eventually the japs attack, Cole is atop Sugar Loaf, and he hides. He is the sole survivor of his own squad. He gets a promotion for his luck, and he's put in command of Kelso's rifle team (Courtney and Irah, along with several others, are also under his command now) and Courtney is talking too Kelso about he's not happy with this turn of events at all, and claims Cole is cursed, he always gets ahead while everyone else around him suffers. In a counter offensive, Cole leads the teams to clearing out japanese defenders. Kelso suggests letting their weapons teams (explosive experts) blow the tunnels, seal them all without needing to risk entering them. Cole insists they will clear them, one by one, according to protocol.
    He orders fire (Flamethrowers) and rifle (Kelso and co.) to take point. They're slowly working their way through when Irah surges ahead into a cave, firing. This is the hospital. Cole demands to know who gave him the order to do that, Jack blames Cole -- Cole did *NOT* order him to push into that cave, Irah does that far ahead of the unit, further ahead than he has any reason to be. The rest of the unit catches up with Irah and they all discover the truth. Civilians, women, children, all dead or dying, burning alive. Ira tries to kill Cole with his flamethrower, but, he's out of juice. People are looking to Cole for a command, and with no other options, Cole orders his men to put any living occupants out of their misery (mirroring decisions Kelso makes). They oblidged, but, Courtney (the medic), has had enough of Cole's leadership. He shoots him the back. Cole passes out from the wound or so we're led to believe. Kelso taking command, orders everyone out of the cave, and orders weapons teams to blow the cave. He says that no one is to talk about what happened there.
    Cole gets a medal after this whole affair, as he's sent home due to his injury. He becomes a cop. Shortly after, Kelso, Courtney, and the rest of the company are also able to go home. They're on board a ship full of medical supplies. Courtney hatches the idea of taking them to the streets, get a real taste of wealth after everything they'd been through. Kelso tells him not to do that.
    The rest is history.
    Contrary to SBFP belief, this is *not* Cole's fault. Cole *thinks* it's his fault for a long time, he becomes a cop in part because he wants to atone for his failures. He only comes to accept himself later. All throughout the game he is lying to himself a great deal, and upon realizing that, you see a strong change in his demeanor.
    What muddies the water is that Cole *is* an asshole. He barely remembers any of the guys he served with in the war, however, keep in mind, *MOST* of those men were people he barely even knew at the time. He remembers Kelso, and he remembers Courtney because they had the biggest affect on him. Irah, while integral to a lot of threads, has his "memorability" robbed from him in the gruesome chaos to follow. Yes, it's incredible dickish big super cop war "hero" Cole Phelps would hit Irah with the "literally who????" but Irah was just a guy with a flame thrower to him back then. But we also see him totally ignore people who he "should" remember. That drunkard who says he knew him in highscool, every solider from the squad who make cameos in the cases. They don't matter to him, and they never did. His mentality is miserable, but, he didn't do anything "wrong."

    Then on the subsequent podcast he came down with Turbo Scurvy and revealed that he's never had a salad in his life.

      Mayo and vinegar are commonly used in salad dressing. There are some dressings without either though. It's still totally possible to order salads and get hyper constipation anyway.

      Danny Provolone But, phelps didn't say anything about not saying anything about the cave. In fact, kelso was the one who said "we never speak about what happened here". And the way phelps phrases the order to kill the civilians, it's as a last resort/mercy kill, cuz they are out of morphine. Phelps was a shitty officer, but he wasn't directly bloodthirsty/having a murder boner.

    Pat keeps saying the cave is Cole's fault, but Kelso and everyone else wanted to Blow up the entrance and move on. Y'know, trapping all those injured and children to painfully starve to death for 3 days. Clearing the cave with a flamethrower detail was the routine "official" process. Granted, it messed up IRA in the head and caused the arson case, but saying it's all Phelps fault for doing it by the book is a bit harsh

    One of my favorite parts of this LP is Woolie saying the pedophilia was always a bonus. Which means he completely misunderstood that the reason that two traffic cases exist. The motives were in response to pedophilia. Two different responses but responses nonetheless. He probably forgot by the time of him saying that, though.
    My all time favorite is how stupid Pat comes off by saying Cole was at fault for the entire plot. Yeah he made a bad call with the cave of civilians, Ira is also at fault for rushing in without thinking, should have looked first and not fired at all. Not to mention Courtney is at fault for shooting Cole, Kelso is especially at fault for demanding no one speak of this again. Which for some reason all of those idiots on the boat followed and then wonder why he’s getting praised by the civilians who weren’t on the field for being a super cop or whatever.
    Pat’s some kind of exceptional idiot to look at the cave scenario and blame Cole for getting shot because Kelso “didn’t stop Courtney”, he looks even more idiotic for blaming Cole for Courtney and his cronies’ idea to distribute morphine. I think the story makes it pretty cut and dry that all of them made terrible calls during the war, no one is exactly 100% at fault. But the thing that is the worst is arguably the entire game’s plot happened because of the morphine distribution, that Cole had no involvement with whatsoever. It was Courtney and the idiots, with Kelso enabling them. Because Kelso is too big of a bro to report them for even talking about stealing it. Pat’s mental gymnasts must be truly amazing for him to come out of seeing that incident as Cole’s fault. “I love that the morphine heist is also Cole’s fault.”
    As he said himself, “You can’t beat this ignorance.”

      @jackthorton10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @alldayagain
      @alldayagain ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Especially considering Courtney's response to the cave was "let's just blow it up"
      Cole's order to 'clear it out' isn't implicitly a violent act. It's protocol, especially for more guerilla engagement, to clear a path in an out to cut-down ambush chances. I image the plan was to storm/survey the cave, and use for if necessary. Upon entering and seeing people with no weapons (or cowering), they'd just have moved on. But than Ira jumped the gun, to which Cole questions and Courtney says "you gave the order". I was so confused like "the fuck he did!". He said clear the cave out. Not burn it to the ground or collapse it like Courtney wanted to fucking do.
      I think the most Cole was at fault for was being in over his head. He froze on sugar loaf, but they didn't take it. He was promoted, but he clearly felt he didn't deserve it. He handle the cave fiasco as best he could. He came back to the states and joined the police, making way through the ranks. But he could never stop trying to solve every case (seen with the first one of the game where he discovered a list denoting some conspiracy), and his partner is like "Cole, we solved the case. Let it be."
      He got in over his head trying to fight the corruption of the city. Maybe for the wrong reason of wanting to prove himself, or maybe chasing glory to prove he was worthy of his promotion and awards given during his service. But ultimately his intentions were good. He could have ended up like Roy is he just kept his head down and did what he was told.
      But it's a noire story, vacant of clear heroes and villains. Just a lot of people stumbling in a miasma of greys.

    So, watching this in the background while I paint some stuff - am I the only one bothered by Pat's insistence that *everything* is Cole's fault? Especially when it comes to Courtney and his pals carrying out the robbery - how can you blame Cole for that? They shot *him* in the back, he got sent home because of what they did, and he had to work to make something of himself as a beat cop before becoming a bigshot detective. Yeah, he was a shitbag in the war, but he can't be accountable for his former men deciding to take an easy route in getting a good deal for themselves.

    • @BuckShockley13
      @BuckShockley13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Did he really have to work? He got to interview the same guy over and over until he confessed to the most obvious murder ever. But if Cole hadn't been a glory-seeking asshole, Hogeboom would've never gone crazy and burned that cave of civilians, Courtney would've never shot Cole, and Cole becoming the hero cop despite being the biggest asshole there ever was in the war wouldn't have driven Courtney and everyone else to such an extreme. The B and C stories in this game - the military flashbacks and the newspaper cutscenes showing the Suburban Redvelopment Fund - are directly caused by Cole Phelps.
