@stevebradley. How can you say that Cool Ground was only slightly better than a moderate handicapper? He won, amongst others, the Gold Cup, the Kim Muir, the Welsh National, two Anthony Mildmays, the Greenhalls Gold Cup and the Jim Ford. I would imagine that most owners of moderate handicappers would be quite happy with one of those races...:)

The mistake he made here, was that he pulled up too much towards jumping that last fence, giving the two other others, who were bigger horses, the chance in eating into his lead with their bigger strides. A great pity.
Carvill's Hill was injured during the race and never attained the same heights again. I do think Jenny Pitman should not have run Golden Freeze the way he was ridden.
Great ride from Adrian Maguire, he nearly always hugged the rail in a race, not making the horse have to do extra mileage. The best N.H. jockey never to win the british jockeys championship.

Just watched this some 20 years having last seen it and my personal opinion now is... The dye was cast at the first fence when Carvills Hill made that shocking blunder and though Golden Freeze was upsides his for over a circit, besides jostling for the lead going to the first bend he had no input to CH performance that day. If you watch GF throuout he never at any stage hassles CH and in fact even go as far as to say CH was more the one who was doing to hustling(even though he wasn't) I understand people saying Jenny P used under hand tactics to benefit Toby Tobias and saying GF should not have been on the line up but worse horses than him have run in the race in the past so was entitled to run, plus there is nothing in the rules to say pacemakers are not allowed. My conclusion is that CH jumped poor that day and never got into a rhythem, not his ideal ground and more simply he just wasnt Gold Cup winner standard. On a final note I think PS was a very overated jockey who gained from Martin Pipes reveloution, he was good on the moderate hurdlers but not such a good chase jockey and why a man of his experience did he try taking GF on knowing that he wouldnt last the pace he could have easly sat back and stalked GF and allow him to take him through the race. Easy for me to say though I suppose.

Reminiscing today with an old friend. He had never placed a bet before and I convinced him that Cool Ground would win! We put our days wages on it £25 ew each at 40s . Fortunately, we had a bit leftover to cover the 10% tax. But if you want an even better example of a bet that day, a toilet cleaner from Southampton (?) called Richard Mussel put a 10p ew accumulater on all 6 races at Cheltenham that day. All 6 of his selections won. He won £500,000, the maximum payout in those days. I seem to remember he bought the company 😂.
If my memory is correct, I don't think it was 10p E.W.accumlator, I think he had £1 win singles on all six winners, then he had, I believe 50p on four fold accumlators and a 20p E.W. six fold accumlator, with Ladbrokes. Now, if he had taken early Prices ( at the time of him placing his bet, Cool Grounds Price was 50/1 ) he would have doubled his winnings to a £1000,000 , ( One Million ). Yes, at that time the Maximum pay outs were Half a Million (£1/2 Million ) at Ladbrokes but, with the exception of These Big Festival Meetings, including Royal Ascot, Grand National Meeting or Glorious Goodwood, when it was doubled to a £.Million.
Nothing wrong with that race only that a hot favorite got turned over and was well beaten. The stuff i heard about Jenny Pitman over the years i assumed she was responsible for drugging carvils hill.

Pssst.... You might want to check to see if Carvill's Hill had a leg before the race!

Can you repeat that in English please?!
Mcoy or Walsh would have won on him
Not on that ground mate.
Dreadful tactics by Golden Freezes Connections, obviously not Good Enough, just purely there to Hamper Carvills Hill, and lets be Honest try to make Him fall. Golden Freeze dropped back rapidly and pulled up. Its ok to Use inferior Horses as pace makers in flat Racing, but no place to use Horses inferior in National Hunt Racing, to try and stop a favourite winning Thankfully The Same owner and Trainers main Horse Toby Tobias was unplaced.
Carvills Hill was brut bully who got downed by Mrs p and his own frailty
What an idiot.
Scu,s arse completely fell out, and it turned out to be a classic 😉 👍
