Chaps is short for chaparero. Protection from chaparel, a very tough and thorny plant in the southwest that is impossible to ride through without protection. Vaqueros and or cowboys would rig leather similar leather gaurds for their horses.
Love the #ranchkitty... i show in leggins or if I’m riding in brushy country or if it’s cold! but otherwise i don’t typically wear them mostly because i don’t feel as Mobil 🤷🏼♀️ i like them a little on the short side so i don’t step on the fringe and trip and i like az bells or shotgun patterns 🤠
A friend of mine was a cowboy in north Texas. He was working on his father's ranch somewhere near Amarillo. One day he got out of the truck to open a cattle gate and got struck by a Western Diamondback. He was wearing a set of Bullhide Shotgun Chaps and fortunately the snake's fangs did not penetrate the hide. So, he was lucky. However, he did say, those big snakes hit hard.
Thank you CC. Always love your videos. Fringes also act as a natural fly repellent so to speak. Flapping around, they keep flies away from your horse. I'm no one to educate the great Craig Cameron...just something I've learned from some Californio style cowboys, buckaroos/vaqueros. God Bless cowboys!
I see you Don't pronounce them Chaps with a hard C but like Shaps, a soft C.. I didn't know that.. I guess most Bikers don't know that either. Thank you for the history lesson and information sir!
Ok so what protects the horse, or is their hide aka shin tat tough? "Chaps are intended to protect the legs of cowboys from contact with daily environmental hazards seen in working with cattle, horses and other livestock. They help to protect riders' legs from scraping on brush, injury from thorns of cacti, sagebrush, mesquite and other thorny vegetation"
I may be doing some horseback riding this fall and some farm work in north Florida where I live and I was wanting a pair of chaps to protect my legs and I was wondering do you recommend chinks or shotgun or batwing chaps. Also I want some western gloves for my riding as well. What kind of gloves do you recommend that are good for both riding and working?
Dang. I thought this was going to show the cat climbing up his leg. That would be an excellent reason to wear chaps.
😂
0:13 ranch kitty 🥰❤️✅

I also believe the chinqs he mentioned are derived from chinquadores which vaqueros were known to wear
Very well said! Thank you, and we have a lot of it here in Az. It will punch through a tire like a piece of rebar....
This old man is great
More great info from the Legend Craig Cameron!
Well! That's super nice information! I want to buy a pair and just wanted some advice and you explained great sir! Thanks!! Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷!
This is a man who knows what a Marlbro Red tastes like
By adding sooooo much more surface area, fringe helps the leather wick moisture and dry quicker in case you get wet

I thought you wore them to keep your jeans bottoms from getting all dirty, on the side of the sweaty horse.
Brother, I’m sorry to say, but listening to your voice and how raspy it is is like nails on a chalkboard for me lol
Because he's a real cowbpuncher ol son
Why do folks in West Hollywood wear chaps?
Cowboy's wear em cause they wanna look like bikers.

I'm thinking probably some boots or leg wraps for the horse.
There pretty tough they nether act bothered when I ride through spiky brush
Good reason not to wear them if u ride english
This didn't answer "Why anyone wears Chaps.".
Chaps are protection from weather and injury from bushes or trees (etc) while riding.
Pretty sure he said weather and so he doesn't slip around in his saddle.

Duh? Mesquite has some serious thorns. Plus cactus and snakes.
