- This hunt for Hitler's personal diaries broke into an international scandal - but not for the reasons you might think.
"The Hitler Diaries (German: Hitler-Tagebücher) were a series of sixty volumes of journals purportedly written by Adolf Hitler, but forged by Konrad Kujau between 1981 and 1983. The diaries were purchased in 1983 for 9.3 million Deutsche Marks (£2.33 million or $3.7 million) by the West German news magazine Stern, which sold serialisation rights to several news organisations. One of the publications involved was The Sunday Times, who asked their independent director, the historian Hugh Trevor-Roper, to authenticate the diaries; he did so, pronouncing them genuine. At the press conference to announce the publication, Trevor-Roper announced that on reflection he had changed his mind, and other historians also raised questions concerning their validity. Rigorous forensic analysis, which had not been performed previously, quickly confirmed that the diaries were fakes.
Kujau, born and raised in East Germany, had a history of petty crime and deception. In the mid-1970s he began selling Nazi memorabilia which he was smuggling from the East, but found he could raise the prices by forging additional authentication details to link ordinary souvenirs to the Nazi leaders. He began forging paintings by Hitler and an increasing number of notes, poems and letters, until he produced his first diary in the mid- to late 1970s. The West German journalist with Stern who "discovered" the diaries and was involved in their purchase was Gerd Heidemann, who had an obsession with the Nazis. When Stern started buying the diaries, Heidemann stole a significant proportion of the money.
Kujau and Heidemann spent time in prison for their parts in the fraud, and several newspaper editors lost their jobs. The story of the scandal was the basis for the films Selling Hitler (1991) for the British channel ITV and the German cinema release Schtonk! (1992)."

My dad restores books for a living, and sometimes requires replacing entire pages, but needing to make them look like the old pages so it doesn't look stupid. He would also use tea to age them, as well as just throw them on the floor and walk all over them, lol.

@@cool_bug_facts You also can't control the real aging process, and it can take hundreds of years for some paper to show age. Brittleness also is never a desireable trait for paper. The only thing that can be done beyond mimicking aged paper is to farm it from old books, as most books will contain at least a few blank sheets at the front and back. We often save this paper from unsalvageable books to use as materials for repairs to other books. If a page is missing a piece, we'll go into our drawer of old paper, find a sheet of similar color and texture, and then take a piece from it to fill the hole. If it's a good match I can often make it appear as though no paper were ever missing to begin with.

I like to think that the newspapers defended the legitimacy of the diaries not because they thought it was legit, but because they were too embarrassed about the thought of being wrong that they had to defend it
The newspaper to first publish it was the Stern. They made a lot of money by revealing Hitlers diaries, but they made even more money with the "Hitlers diaries fake!" headline.
That's most of what news has always been. Making risky assumptions early on, then doubling down on those assumptions in hopes that you don't look stupid later

There is a ITV miniseries ("Selling Hitler" 1991) and a german movie ("Schtonk!" 1992), the last one getting an Oscar nomination.
The podcast "Faking Hitler" by Stern (the newspaper that wanted to publish the books) is also pretty good. Though I don't know if there are any dubs for non-germans.

After it was captured by the British it was used as a patrol ship along the Rhine, guests on board included the Queen, Prince Phillip, and Prince Charles (the ship was renamed “Prince Charles” when he was born). Then Heidemann bought it and it hosted SS generals.

His motivation was to retake the territory that was forcibly taken from Germany and given to Poland/Russia after WWI and to punish them for the ethnic cleansing they began waging against the Germans who still lived there
While his early writings mention the overrepresentation of Jooz in banking and media, he was primarily opposed to these Slavic peoples during his rise to power.
So, when he talked about “the Aryan race” he didn’t mean white people as opposed to non-white people. He meant Germanic white people as opposed to Slavic white people
This is pretty plainly evidenced by the fact that his primary allies were Japan (not white) and Italy (definitely not considered white at that time). His army also featured more than a few Arabs and Africans and it even featured a fair share of Jooz.
When he came to speak of “the jooz” as a problem it wasn’t based on random racist animosity that fomented from the ground up at the working class level. It was frustration with the jooish elites in government, media, and politics who were conspiring against Germany’s interests from within Germany.
Specifically they were threatened by Germany’s rapid industrialization and economic ascension coupled with HitIer’s decision to take the country’s currency into its own hands instead of relying on the (Jooish) central banks.
So this wasn’t just a paranoid suspicion. It was a fact. You can read New York Times headlines from more than ten years before WWII talking about Jooish lobbies in America, England, and Germany conspiring (in the strictest literal interpretation of the word) against Germany’s economy and its war effort. Just google “Judea Declares War On Germany” and note the date.
What led to mass expulsion of Jooz from Germany altogether was that he kept discovering people at the ground level collaborating with the saboteurs. It became impossible to tell the good ones from the bad ones so he just had them all expelled.
Note that in all the history of genocide-level mass murders nobody has ever put people on trains to send them someone else. They just.. you know.. march them into a field somewhere and kiII them. Putting people on trains costs a lot of money. It’s not something a mass murderer would bother with if he planned to just execute people by the millions.
Likewise, they wouldn’t house them in special-made facilities that featured amenities such as (Im not making this up) swimming pools, theaters, and maternity wards.
The reality is that six miIIion were not mass murderer. Some were. Probably somewhere between 100 and 300 thousand by reasonable estimates. Most died of starvation and sickness after the supply lines to the concentration camps were bombed. Those camps were just detention centers though. And they held lots of people. Not just jooz and certainly not six miIIion of them
In the end the bad guys won though because America stabbed the good guys in the back. The bad guys then wrote the false history of what happened and nowadays it’s literally illegal in many places to question the official narrative (which is all the evidence you need to know it’s a lie). The story has been rewritten in a way that convinces everyone that HitIer was going to try to genocide all non-whites but he actually literally led the most racially diverse military coalition in human history and his primary enemies were people that looked more like him than his own allies.
Since WWII there have been quite a few times where “the US” (who is just the military wing of the Jooish world bank cartel) has declared someone to be a genocidal madman who must be overthrown. Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Assad, Putin, Castro, etc. Coincidentally what they all have in common is that they challenge the US dollar and the banking system on which it operates. That’s what gets you invaded. Not waging war or genocide. If it was the US would have invaded Israel half a century ago yet all it ever really does is praise it and send it money.

imagine a scenario where you’re waking around in a forest and you just see some cardboard boxes with swastikas on them
Watching the editors and historians get it wrong remind me of the time my father was a vice president at Holt Rinehart and Winston and he was their chief editor, so he allowed the placement of a map of North America that supposedly was from Leif Ericson and he put it into the American History textbook which at the time was the most commonly used edition in the country. The map came from Yale University and he thought it would be a great idea to start the book with the map. 4 months later after they had printed the book, it turned out the map was a forgery, using a felt tipped marker for the map.
But it made it into the book and has been there reprinted over and over since the late 1960s. The map has created a whole field of education, may professors have been hired and rehired in educational institutions worldwide on the subject and it all comes down to a forgery.
Once again another great moment of German journalism, gotta love it

The book "Selling Hitler" by Richard Harris and the ITV film of it Qxir mentions in the description are actually pretty good, Jonathan Price plays Heidemann and Alexei Sayle Kujau. The discredited historian David Irving is played by Roger Lloyd-Pack (Trigger), Irving's presence is unfortunate in hindsight but he did doubt the dairies from the start.

This is such a brilliant story. It really made huge waves here in Germany back in the day. And Kujau ist still an absolute legend. You can´t help but love the guy, I mean there is nothing better then conning Nazis out of their money.

I remember watching all this unfold in Germany. From the very first report in the German weekly magazine, Der Stern, that Hitler's dairies had been found and will soon be published, I was more intrigued by the stupidity of the people so easily buying into the story without any reflection of just what they were doing. Der Stern, a primary national news outlet at the time, never really recovered from it and has a far smaller circulation now.
