Minnesota was one of the elite teams in the nation, but Lindsay Whalen was injured and missed a large portion of the season, which resulted in a number of losses, which resulted in a 7 seed when, in reality, with Whalen at her best, they were probably a 2 seed.

Thank you. Now I know the rest of the story. First time I had watched this game, although, having had glimpsed of WNBA games before I already knew Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville. Their dominance of Duke in this game was not unexpected. Moreover, the old time officiating is wonderful to witness again, instead of today's theatrical flops to induce an offensive foul.

Alex Manzon: Not really. When you compare the positions.
      PG Shonrock < Harding
      SG Whalen > Beard
      SF Bolden < Curry
      PF Anderson > Tillis
      C McCarville > Bass
Harding better than Shonrock hands down.
Whalen better than Beard. She has more moves, IQ much better, great passer, great defender, and tough to guard
Bolden & Curry are fairly even. Both play hard on both ends. Bolden plays better defense.
Anderson better than Bass. She has great foot work and runs the floor extremely well in which makes her hard to guard for an undersized post player.
McCarville better than Tillis. Enough said. Hell she's better than both Bass and Tillis all together. As seen at the 5:45 mark in the 1st half.
Minnesota plays better as a team. They know each other well, they work much harder than and they are all individually talented. That made them a better team than Duke.

@@timothyriggins8651 When you look at the longevity of their careers, Duke is by far better. Minnesota Players: Whelan and McCarville are the only 2 who made an impact in the WNBA. Whelan obviously reaching Olympic team status. But their other 3 barely had a career post college. Duke Players: Harding was the number 1 pick in the WNBA and making an impact on every single team that she played for. Beard also going top 3 overall in the draft and similarly making huge impacts on all of the teams in the WNBA, Currie similar to Beard going high in the draft and being a top scorer for every team in the WNBA. Both Harding and Beard were on all defensive team and all three: Beard, Harding and Currie have been WNBA all stars. Bass had a long career in the WNBA and even won a championship for the Mercury where she was a key player for that entire season. She started on every WNBA team that she played for at some point. Tillis was the only one out of these 5 that didn't have a long WNBA career but she did play for the first couple of years after college. So when you look at it this way, Duke 5 overall are way better than the Minnesota players. Not even close.

@@zeusarreguin3200 I get your point, but that is later in time. We're talking about during that 2003-04 season. Minnesota was an awesome team. Duke could do nothing with Minnesota. At the half Nell Fortner made the statement that all the defenses that Duke runs on teams was having no affects on Minnesota. They clearly had nothing on them. The weakest link in the starting 5 for UM was Schonrock, but Minnesota dominated every other position. Now as time goes on players evolve and some don't. That's were we are at now. So yes, Duke players progress while some of the Minnesota players took a step back. 2003-04 Minnesota was the better team.

@@timothyriggins8651 The only way that I agree with your statement is because of the outcome of this game. Obviously Minnesota won, however I think that if you look at overall stats of each player throughout that entire season, Duke had an overall more balanced and talented team. This is based on stats during that season. I realize that they are in completely different conferences so you'd have to compare difficulty of schedule within each conference, etc. but both the Big 10 and ACC were 2 of the power conferences. Also, pre-collage all of the Duke's starting 5 are McDonald's All Americans. If you look at the 1-2 seasons after this season, Duke still had Harding, Currie and Bass (Minnesota still had McCarville, Boldon and Shonrock), Duke went to the Elite 8 in 2005 (Minnesota lost in the Sweet 16), Duke Final 4 in 2006 (Minnesota out in the first round). Minnesota basically had mediocre seasons after Whelan left. But after Beard left, Duke maintained their national power rankings being number 1 at any point for those years. I think that says a lot considering how dominant the ACC was in 2006 when the Final 4 had 3 teams from the ACC (UNC, Maryland and Duke). Maryland and Duke were the final.
