I've heard of an alternative to TH-cam where you can log in with your google account but it disables all the algorithm and disables the activity tracking, like a front end alternative website, but I don't remember the name.
In terms of youtube front-ends, there is Invidious which supports subscriptions, notifications, audio-only mode (with mobile background play), and more all without Javascript. You can also host it yourself.
Using VLC and mpv for watching TH-cam is not as good as using NewPipe or getting the links to the max quality audio and video and inputting them in VLC. That's because Google stores the audio and video files separately and the official TH-cam player gets the quality you choose and combines the file. Google does store a copy of the video with both audio and video in the same file, but it's limited to 720p 30 fps. When you copy paste the youtube link into VLC or mpv, it resorts to that copy
For me, mpv could playback the combined files just fine. Could, since youtube-dl is the weakest link right now. It seems to be throttled by TH-cam at random, and the youtube-dl development is so slow these days that they haven't fixed it for months. Guess I should move on to yt-dlp as well. They've apparently solved this problem.
@@jpHasABadHandle The only way I know to play full quality videos on vlc is to get the URLs of the best video and best audio with a flag in the youtube-dl command and then tell VLC to play the video from the internet and combine it with the audio. This is pretty slow and very unintuitive for new people, so I'd like to know if there are any better methods, maybe even with mpv
@@markio1105 You acquire mpv and youtube-dl (or yt-dlp). On Window, I used them as portable applications, and just placed these under the same folder. On Linux distros, you just install them from repos. youtube-dl is an optional dependency for mpv already, so setting this up is nearly effortless. Now you either enter mpv followed by the URL in command line, or use something like ff2mpv add-on, if you're a Firefox user.
@@jpHasABadHandle Thanks, it actually works pretty well! However, it still isnt the best for people that aren't all that tech savvy... I have tried NewPipe on Android, but I haven't tried Freetube on PC

Youre missing the fact that the competition is all worse, nothing is perfect. At least you know who owns it, which is not the case with most competitors.
There's a question that's been bugging me for a long time, even as a tech-literate person: Why does it matter if I knowingly give my information to those big tech corp by using their services? So what if they know my interests, my location, etc.? The only thing that I've thought about so far is biasing results for searches about political stuff, but I'm mindful of that. Also, degrading the performance (CPU, bandwidth usage, etc.) of devices with useless telemetry. I personally feel that things like targeted ads aren't that scary as long as it doesn't get crazy like for example your browsing history affecting your insurance policy in real life. I'm genuinely not trying to create drama or take a stance, just looking for respectful answers about privacy that I might not have considered/realize yet. In my case, Canadian privacy laws apply if that's of any help.
hi, you asked in good faith so I'll answer in good faith. I vehemently hate the "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" argument so sorry in advance if anything I say sounds harsh, it's not personal. first, on a practical level I assume you are unaware of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, and Fourteen Eyes. these are international intelligence sharing agreements between western nations that had the original stated goal of international cooperation to combat the soviet union. since the soviet union is now long gone, the intelligence communities of the participating countries now use it as justification to circumvent domestic privacy laws. Let's say a Canadian intelligence agency wanted some private information on you, but they're legally prevented from gathering it. Assuming they don't find a loophole in order to gather the information themselves, they can ask any other country in the five/nine/fourteen eyes to spy on you and pass the information to you. Pretty convenient, right? but let's suppose you're ok with not only the privacy protections offered by your home country, but also the meager to nonexistent privacy protections offered by the thirteen other countries in the agreement to non-citizens. you're an ordinary guy, no ambitions of getting into politics, never had a run-in with the law for so much as a speeding ticket, and maybe (but probably not) never even done so much as said the word "terrorist" within earshot of a phone. You're not worried about being mistaken for someone with the same or a similar name who was put on a no-fly list, or that something you've done in the past will become illegal in the future, you're not a member of a persecuted minority, you're not a linux user (which is enough to get you put on a watchlist in my home country the United States) etc. etc. etc. Nothing I've mentioned is enough to make you the slightest bit concerned about how much of your private life is accessible by fallible, paranoid human beings, then I'm not really sure what to say other than I hope I've presented you with some novel information that made you think. If I haven't, or you still don't see the potential for abuse, and imo, your obligation to look after yourself to at least some degree, then I think your intuition is just plain miscalibrated. one last thought. even if you don't care about anything else I've said and you're an absolute model citizen, even you probably have curtains on your house. most people instinctively know that regardless of whether or not they're doing anything illegal or embarrassing, it's simply not always appropriate for someone to be able to observe you. hope this helps
