Awesome! I am working my way up to a sump. One day I will probably have one... I have experience with an FX6 Canister Filter because I used to have one on a 125-gallon aquarium. It was great meeting you and taking a picture with you at Aquashella Dallas Saturday, May 20!! You'll probably remember us now when I say: My dad and I are New Yorkers too just like you. I have African Clawed Frogs and they are doing good. I love breeding cichlids!
Heads up for you. You can remove the bits from your screwdriver and use it as a nut driver. Makes it a lot easier to lock down your hose clamps instead of fighting with the slots and the flathead screwdriver bit.
I have been out of the hobby since I was around 12. At 54, I just jumped back in with my wife, going with Mbuna. After a lot of research, I decided to forego canisters on my 100 gallon and build my own sump. I purchased two 40 breeders from Petco, one as the sump, the other I sacrificed for glass to be used to separate the sump chambers (FYI, the bottom panel on the Aqueon 40 breeder I used for chamber glass is tempered...ask me how I know. All other panels were used and were not tempered). A lot of work and learning, but I'm thrilled with the results. My sump goes like this: water return chamber into two 4"/14" socks>mechanical filtration chamber (FilterFirst)>moving bed chamber containing ~70% K2 and two air pump outlets>secondary mechanical (FilterFirst)/chemical filtration (purigen and Chemi Pure Blue) chamber>UV filter/return pump chamber. I have to say, I'm thrilled with the performance. Water is crystal clear and water testing is beyond my expectations. 35 Mbuna and 7 Petricola, and I'm testing Nitrate at a level where I only have to water change every 3-4 weeks at 40PPM. I'm thrilled with the performance, considering the sump was very inexpensive to build compared to all of the prebuilt online options I could find. I change my two socks every 3-4 days, dump my Aquatic Experts FilterFirst pads in the mechanical chambers once they demonstrate reduced water flow (~7 days) and my chemical filtration gets changed as needed (months). I love returning to this hobby, and keeping my fish happy and healthy! Keep up the good work!
Wait, wait, wait, wait, what???? Is actually what was going through my mind as I lost about 4 min of your video when it hit me and I paused in thought. This system eliminates the large overflow chamber in the back of a tank and the ATO tank…..wooow! See I completely got out of the hobby about 5 years ago and haven’t kept up with the latest going on. I had a 300 gallon saltwater and recently thought about getting back in with another saltwater and maybe a freshwater too! So I’ve been trying to refresh my knowledge and study up and came across the seamless sump system and your video! This was an excellent video and I’ve just become a subscriber and I also really like the seamless sump system . I was looking for any innovations and specifically a sump system made for larger tanks. Thank you for the clear info (even though I’m still a little foggy on how the trickle valve in the sump works) I have some studying to do but I think you sold me. I appreciate you and Semper Fi!
Glad to hear you enjoyed the video and found it helpful! I actually DIY'd an upgrade to this setup to create even more flow into the reservoir chamber for better flow. You might enjoy that one too - th-cam.com/video/8FSPKWroxNU/w-d-xo.html Appreciate the sub, Semper Fi!
What I admire in you, is that yr always improving yr tanks, the socks do a great job, but most of the people complain that they are hard to clean, normally going to the wash machine, but they well leave yr water Cristal clear, it's always good to watch yr videos, my freindm
Hi Kev, love love your channel. And also I ordered a complete system from custom aquarium for my African cichlids about six years ago and let me tell you it’s the best system some I’ve ever had was intimidated at first, but it’s the easiest thing ever.❤
I just received my 75 gallon tank from Customer Aquarium. Only have one sock AND my system stoped with the tub for the pump. However this video helped will help me set up my Aquarium- thanks I saved to rewatch 😊
I installed the Seamless sump on my new 240g from Custom Aquariums a month ago and love it. I plumbed in a water line that goes through a carbon filter and brings in one gallon of chlorine free water each hour. I also drilled the reservoir tub and added a bulkhead and a drain so it drains out excess water. No water changes!
Thank you for this video & sharing your knowledge I received a huge tank with sump system and wasn't sure how it all works. Appreciate you sharing what you know. 🫶🙏
Just want to say man you’ve completely inspired me in this hobby. In short I have a 55 gallon tank: 1 red tail shark, 10 Tiger barbs, 4 yo-yo loaches. All completely healthy. Water is crystal clear due to your help in many videos. The wave maker is a GEM in this hobby extremely underrated and adds so much extra filtration. My fish love it. My red tail shark is now 1 Yrs old and some change. Great video man! Seachem Prime is a LIFE SAVER
I was hesitant to have a sump for years! If my seemless sump was created back then, I would have nothing but sumps!😂 I modified my sump so I can get 30 days or more before cleaning it. I can’t wait to see you get there too.
If I may. I'd recommend you a mechanics pen light. They are small and easily portable, and they come in a wide range of prices and brightness. They would be perfect for seeing better for setting up and for recording in tight areas.
Superb! Once you go sump'd there's no going back.i truly hate cannister filters now. The ability to run reactors for my purigen/carbon on my discus tanks & on my marine tanks biophos/chaeto has hugely helped with stability.great setup hope you enjoy it🎉🎉🎉🎉
This was absolutely terrifying for me Kev!! 🤣 Very interesting and informative...but It will be along time before I get to this level! Could this sump be used for salt water Aquarium also? You did the power outage test...looks like it good to go. For the first time using a sump and installing...you did an amazing job! Hope new tank will be up and running soon with no more issues for you! I can't wait to see when it's finished! Thank you for taking the time to show this! Very much appreciated and will have this for future reference.( it'll be awhile though)! 🤣 😊❤
I felt the same way about sumps for a long time! And it is a lot of upfront work. but once its in there's very little to do to maintain it. Clean the socks every few days and replace chemical media monthly, which is super easy to do since its an open system. But I totally get where you're coming from. I've been doing this for a while and only now finally felt like I was ready for it lol But I'm glad I pushed myself to expand and try something new...AND get this information out to everyone for whenever they might be ready 😊😊😊 It'll be here for you when you are! 💪
@@KaveManAquatics well that you so much Kev. You did explain this Step by Step and very thorough on everything. I'm not ready for hoses and fittings..🤣 Great informative video! 😊❤️
One of the best forms of filtration when I've used a sump has been a moving bed. Large amounts of k1 type media does make some noise which can be somewhat dampened but in terms of performance, it makes such a huge difference to the biological filtration of a large tank.
Been waiting on this video, a sump pump has always looked a bit completed really feel comfortable with my canisters but if I want a big tank someday this is the best filtration, Thanks again and hopefully I'll see you at Aquashella Chicago !
Good job man, congrats on the new tank. I have learned a lot from you about hold and keep african cichlids. Regardless of the sump, i wasn't a big fan of the set up, since i am used to the return pumps set up in last, running normal from what I could see on this video the water rarely goes to the refugium. Also, it may help in case you are having drain noise, change those pips for hard ones, and use valves to control the overflow. But from this video, I couldn't listen to the noise, so I'm just leaving a tip in case there are. I am looking forward to updates 😉 Keep up the good work!!
Absolutely love your channel, so informative and even though I have a fair bit of experience I've learnt a lot from your videos. Keep up the great work.
Hey nice informative video. Just a tip.. the hoses heat with boiling water it will soften the pvc making it easier to fit barb fittings then secure with hose clamps.. 2 tip see if there is an electronic cutoff / stop valves on the outlets to stop flow to sump pump when power goes out. Cheers
Only have a 100 g tank, so I’ll stick to my fx4 and fx6 but you make such entertaining video I watched it, your the best. Based on vids on wavemakers now using them to get the circulation in my 100 g cichlids😊
I'm happy for you bro 400 gallon nice sized tank good idea keeping that Arrowarna a sump on a tank that size in my opinion is nessesy keep up the good fish keeping go Seachem 👍
It looks awesome, and I'm sure you will enjoy the new set up. I'll admit I'm relatively new to the hobby, so forgive my ignorance. With the tight fit under the stand, do you not need to get into the sump system after installation? There doesn't look like much room to get those media bags out for any future cleaning or removing any tubs for cleaning/maintenance. How is this accomplished or does it never need to be done?
It is a tight fit but just as I got the bags in I can get them out. With that being said though, I dont plan on ever needing to remove the media bags. Even if they're dirty that just means more beneficial bacteria 😊 Bio-media is something you want to interact with as little as possible in your tank 💪
This is an awesome setup and well explained. Thank you. That being said, my hand me down tank is drilled on the bottom and top for out and in. So there are something’s that will be different and I have to work through those while I’m saving up for my custom aquarium. 😅
Glad you enjoyed it Ruth! I would think you're drains would just be connected at the bottom and returns on top at the back. Custom aquariums would be able to guide you on how to connect your drilled tank properly 😁 But a new tank would be great too! LOL
Cant lie, this project was beyond me. I definitely stepped into the uncomfortable zone but glad that I did in the end. 😁 Sometimes you just have to push yourself over that hill 💪
Now that you have a sump, is it easier to maintain than a couple FX6 filters? I'm going to have a 300 gallon tank built, and I'm trying to decided whether or not I should just use my two FX6 cannisters, or if I should I have the tank drilled and get a sump. I appreciate your input. Thanks Kev.
Hey man. Pretty cool video. I'm seriously considering switching to a sump from 2 fx6s on my 180. Question though, with all the gluing that you did, what happens if you need to move?
From someone that knows nothing about this type of system, how would you clean those last 2 chambers if they're glued together? I'd think some debris is going to make its way in there because it always seems to make it through several layers of filter in a cannister. Also, can you remove the hoses or elbows from the attachment point on the tank if something happens? Does it still unscrew once you get glue in there?
Well 1, I dont ever plan to have the need to remove it. If the tank needs to be moved, I would just drain the sump and move the stand with it in there. 2, I'm sure if I really needed to I can heat up those connections to remove the cement glue and remove them 😊
The way I always did my sump fill was to fill the tank until it started to drain into the sump & then stop. Once it broke the siphon, I'd fill the sump to about 2" from it overflowing. That sets the power out level of the whole system. Then turn on the return pump(s) & once it stabilizes, you mark that as your running level. As long as you are never OVER that level, the system will never flood in a power outage. If you have an ATO, this is the level it should be set at to maintain.
@@KaveManAquatics yeah never used the Seamless Sump systems….my prior sump systems were always created with standard glass aquariums with cut glass pieces making the baffles/individual chambers
Correct, but I have since changed the layout of the bio-media in the baffle chamber to allow for more mechanical media. Which has improved the tanks clarity.
Kev if you want to the very best biological filtration available, run fluidized K1 media. Nothing else comes close and with give you the best water quality.
Been running this sump for little.over a year now. I can't get this thing to keep the water crystal clear. I'm about to add some fx4s for polishing. This is on my 350 gal
Really!! I highly doubt its the sump. There's something else going on in the tank causing this. My book on getting crystal clear water can definitely help! It's short, to the point, and covers all the causes and solutions for cloudy water. Comes in eBook and Paperback. I promise you won't be disappointed! Check it out here - bit.ly/clearH2O
Remove the socks is easy enough. Don’t ever really need to “maintain” the bio media. That’s going to stay in there forever lol Might give them a rinse once a year or so….we shall see 😁
Nice video broski trust me my friend changing those socks will be a challenge because the sock table is huge and the stand can only be so high I have the same setup on a 540 and I dred changing my socks because of this I hope you don’t run into this issue like I have I swapped out my custom aquariums sump and went to a pool sand filter water is crystal clear good luck bro I love your videos I’m not trying to be a negative person I’m simply telling you the issues I ran into hope the best bro
Just curious. If the only intakes are strainers at the top, and not intake tubes reaching down, how are you going to get the substrate clean with wavemakers?
Wavemakers may not do as good of a job, but they’ll still help. The goal is to get them to keep detritus moving and not trapped somewhere on the substrate. If I can get that setup properly, the floating debris will find the overflows 😁
I feel like the refugium section need a return pump back to the socks u have unused... So more flow will thus bio filtered water can be utilised in the tank
hmmm...that isnt a terrible idea... will definitely think about it, thanks! I did modify the sump after this install though, check it out - th-cam.com/video/8FSPKWroxNU/w-d-xo.html
Nice setup ,must of cost a good buck , I don't like that sump is sofar back ,also no real way to see in it. Maybe an inspection window in each section . Im very curious to see how you like it and how bad or easy is it to clean
I lost my last comment to edit. So if there is a power out, the water will continue to syphon untill the water is below the outlet on the tank. In which case it would be best to build a catch can under the tank that can accommodate the over flow extra water level from the first tub where the pump sits. So it doesnt flow onto the floor.
Seems pretty straight forward except the refugium. Not really understanding how water flows back into the sump? Obviously water will come in through the black pipe, but from there how does it get back to the system?
Great question! The T-Valve has 2 output drip lines. 1 drips into the Evap reservoir and the other drips into the Refugium. So the pump chamber is always continuously dripping into both reservoirs 😁
You only tested for power failure. What if the overflow stops and pumps drains the sump for water? Also, just put glass or something like it, on top of the sump, there is made room for it. Then there is almost no evaporation. Looks good.
It has glass tops, I think I showed them in the tank setup video before this one. If the tank isn’t overflowing then the sump will eventually run dry and pumps won’t have water to pump into it. Also, having multiple overflows will prevent this from happening if one gets clogged for some reason.
Great video as usual. Typically not a great idea to put a heater in the pump chamber. Ask me how i know. You can never have too much filter floss. You'll find a way to add to more. And check valves in returns. Not criticizing just trying help.
Appreciate the tips. Heaters are in the baffle separated from the pumps, but I know what you mean lol Can’t wait to add a ton of mechanical media and floss for that crispy look! 😁💪
I wanna know more about your parrot fish Gordo, hes like the most mysterious biggest fish, you never seem to talk about him much. Also my fish Darwin is the same species as him and I just got him like 4 months ago.
Hey, I was just wondering if you had heard anything about the FWC's proposed whitelist down here in Florida? While I believe it's implementation has been postponed for further analysis, I think it is important to get the word out about what they were trying to do as it would impact the hobby on a national level. I haven't seen any of the bigger fish keeping channels mention this issue and was hoping you would. This proposed whitelist could decimate fish farms here in Florida and make the acquisition of fish on a national level far more difficult, expensive and eliminate legally keeping a large number of species. As I said, the FWC has put this on the back burner for the moment to do further analysis as they were unaware of the amount of species involved, (about 30,000 of which they were aware of 2 to 3 thousand), but this still has the potential to seriously affect our pets in the future of it isn't completely shot down. Hope to hear you speak about this as it is a serious threat to our hobby/lifestyle. Keep up the great work.

How are the water changes on this thing? Do you even need to do them with this advanced of a sump?
Yes, no matter what type of filtration you have, water changes are still beneficial.
Very well explained Kave bro 👌
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! 😁
Welcome to sumping!
Thanks!! 😁💪
Excellent video👌
How are you ever going to get the last 2 parts of the sump out of there if needed if you glued them together at the black pipes?
Well 1, I dont ever plan to have the need to remove it. If the tank needs to be moved, I would just drain the sump and move the stand with it in there. 2, I'm sure if I really needed to I can heat up those connections to remove the cement glue and remove them 😊
Hey I know this is a off topic question but I don’t know when and how much KH and GH I should add to my tank if you don’t mind can you help ?
Great Presentation 🐟🐠💪
Thank you! 😁 Glad you enjoyed it!
Sir I love the new tank, do you think youd be able to run a tank this size with 2 Fluval fx6?
It depends on your bio load. Usually with a tank this size, you’ll have a lot/big fish so 2 canister won’t be enough.
Excellent! I would have filled the same way but wanted to ensure there weren’t any leaks in the sump first 😁
@@KaveManAquatics yeah never used the Seamless Sump systems….my prior sump systems were always created with standard glass aquariums with cut glass pieces making the baffles/individual chambers
Kev where do you think I should get my discus from?
First try "The Fish Hut of New Jersey" I got mine there. If they arent shipping currently, then try Jack Wattley Discus. Tell him that I sent you 😊
@@KaveManAquatics thank you!!!
Am i right ? the only mechanical filtration is the socks? along the two little fine pads you added ?
Correct, but I have since changed the layout of the bio-media in the baffle chamber to allow for more mechanical media. Which has improved the tanks clarity.
Hey Kave, would a fx4 be enough for 75 gal. Mbuna tank?
10 yel. Labs. , 7 demasoni, 6 or 7 acei.
Kev if you want to the very best biological filtration available, run fluidized K1 media. Nothing else comes close and with give you the best water quality.
I wanna get a similar sump, maybe smaller. Do those hoses included? If not, what are they?
Yes, everything is included and they do make a smaller version 😁
Fish cave for the W!❤
😁💪
A sump without a dry/wet tower system? how can you let this happen?
Been running this sump for little.over a year now. I can't get this thing to keep the water crystal clear. I'm about to add some fx4s for polishing. This is on my 350 gal
Really!! I highly doubt its the sump. There's something else going on in the tank causing this. My book on getting crystal clear water can definitely help! It's short, to the point, and covers all the causes and solutions for cloudy water. Comes in eBook and Paperback. I promise you won't be disappointed! Check it out here - bit.ly/clearH2O
We need a an in person tour of your setup. Can you say field trip?
🤣🤣🤣
There doesn't look to be much working room under the tank. How will you maintain the bag filters and matrix if the chamber is full etc?
Remove the socks is easy enough. Don’t ever really need to “maintain” the bio media. That’s going to stay in there forever lol Might give them a rinse once a year or so….we shall see 😁
Are you not suppose to let the cement dry before adding water?
The cement drys almost instantly! It's not like silicone. 😊
Thanks for the heads up. I will let you know how it goes changing the socks out...Havent touched them yet but no fish in the tank yet either lol
Hi, I wondering where do you get the 3d root background?
All my backgrounds are from aquadecorbackgrounds.com Tell them KaveMan sent you, lol Also use code Kaveman10 at checkout for a 10% discount 😊
Love from India 🇮🇳 ❤
Thank you sir! 😁
nice build dude
Thanks! 😁
That last chamber only have 1 bulkhead into it ? How does water go in and out of it ?
The T-valve drips water into both the evap and Refugium reservoirs 😁
I feel like the refugium section need a return pump back to the socks u have unused... So more flow will thus bio filtered water can be utilised in the tank
hmmm...that isnt a terrible idea... will definitely think about it, thanks! I did modify the sump after this install though, check it out - th-cam.com/video/8FSPKWroxNU/w-d-xo.html
Yes yes 🙌 I need a 400 hundred gallon down I got 220
Nice setup ,must of cost a good buck , I don't like that sump is sofar back ,also no real way to see in it. Maybe an inspection window in each section . Im very curious to see how you like it and how bad or easy is it to clean
Nice idea, a display window would be nice. here's an update video on it - th-cam.com/video/rfyb6EHob9c/w-d-xo.html
Awesome ❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
I did not see the name of the “glue” in the the description. Can you provide- thanks.
Check again, I recently added it. 😁
Love it!
Thank you!
I need to see the fish in there!
Had a recent mishap with the tank! Working on it and that video for next week, fish coming soon! 😊
What package should I get for my 230gal
If you contact customaquariums.com directly they will take care of any questions you might have and set you up for success! 😊💪
Add a check valve to your pumps to prevent the back siphon
I’m no expert but it seems easier to build your own. There’s so many equations in this setup.
Equations? Building your own? Hey, if thats your strong suit, go for it 💪
Is this good for stingrays
Of course
Great video as usual. Typically not a great idea to put a heater in the pump chamber. Ask me how i know. You can never have too much filter floss. You'll find a way to add to more. And check valves in returns. Not criticizing just trying help.
Appreciate the tips. Heaters are in the baffle separated from the pumps, but I know what you mean lol Can’t wait to add a ton of mechanical media and floss for that crispy look! 😁💪
Pro tip: insert pvc fittings and give it a 1/4 turn for a very secure seal and cure.
Keep up the great work.
what are your tank dimensions?
96x36x28
This is not affordable for most people this is a TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR PROJECT 😳😎🍀
Adding a sump is no where near 10k….🤣🤣
@@KaveManAquatics the whole system including the tank stand sump substrate fish I’m close KEVIN LOL😎👍🍷🍾
How much does a sump set cost
It caries based on size. I suggest you check out their website and input your measurements 😁
