      Few non-europeans appreciate how close German is to Dutch, Danish, Flemish and how many German-speaking minorities there are in Eastern Europe.
      Once you have the German grammar reasonably down German is actually much easier than English. Secondly: Germans are very forgiving to non-native speakers. They will nitpick constantly about minor grammatical points - but otherwise. French will outright refuse to speak to you if your french isn't perfect.
      When I was young: The first time I was in Germany, I spoke to a person just after I had arrived and then again to him just before I went back home. According to him: I started out with an error in just about every sentence and after 6 weeks I had one in every 10 sentences.
      Now generally the Dutch speak a very good German, but won't. They will much rather speak English - which they absolutely butcher. It is much easier to speak with Dutch in German - comprehension wise.

      If he didn't say it in the beginning I'd never have guessed that he isn't a native speaker. He sounds like someone from northern germany that has lived in england for a while. Really impressive.

      @@thomasborgsmidt9801 it's probably easier for the duch to speak german than for the germans to try duch. that's my personal experience at least 😅

    • @thomasborgsmidt9801
      @thomasborgsmidt9801 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@darthcalanil5333 Definately! Danes too. It is funny to listen to Germans speaking English - their grammar is much better than natural speakers; but their accent is so thick you can slice it - generally speaking. Ursula von der Leyen is an exception.
      The funny thing is: In Turkey you can get by speaking German, as there are so many retired workers that have worked in Germany at some point.
      My fourth language is spanish - it should have been italian - great food (allways important to a Dane) and great opera.

    You might like or dislike the Germans, but make no mistake: It is the central european culture in one variant or the other.
    It is sort of the same situation with the americans: You might like or dislike them; but to deny their importance is plainly stupid.
    Personally I would have liked an Italian also; but considering the political developments I understand there is a particularly nasty war on opera stages in these "difficult times".

      If you look at the sad state of the Bundeswehr-vehicles, you might know there is nothing to fear. The Bovington-Tank-Collection could beat them back ;)

      Actually "gekoloniseerd" is wrong German. It is "kolonisiert" or if you want to get across the meaning of colonized used lately in public media I would rather call it "besetzt".

    First I would like to apologise to Chris but that was one sexy video. As an engineer I am in always interested in the engineering of the tanks. Can we have a new “Tank Chat”, bugger the curator ( not really. the history is always good) but I want to know why 2 engines, which parts of the Mark IV came from commercial in use stuff COTS “Commercial off the shelf“ in modern parlance how did they make the Leopard so light etc etc
    Fantastic presentation!
    Cheers
    Tom
