  • Is Uganda an Indian colony? This is the title for the recently published book by historian, Prof Samwiri Lwanga Lunyiigo, a Ugandan scholar.
The book wades into the combustible subject of Indian story and weaves it around commerce, politics and the culture wars between the settlers and the natives. But is this the case?

Africa, India and China also have trading relationships from ancient times. When the first Portuguese ship reached India, it was an Indian merchant ship that sailed between Africa and India showed it the route to India.

All those in positions of political power, all governments, all kings, and all republican authorities have always looked askance at private property. There is an inherent tendency in all governmental power to recognize no restraints on its operation and to extend the sphere of its dominion as much as possible. To control everything, to leave no room for anything to happen of its own accord without the interference of the authorities-this is the goal for which every ruler secretly strives. If only private property did not stand in the way! Private property creates for the individual a sphere in which he is free of the state. It sets limits to the operation of the authoritarian will. It allows other forces to arise side by side with and in opposition to political power.

Look at this comment section. These people are busy resenting the one community that is succeeding and helping their economy grow. Is it only in Africa? No. Indians are successful wherever they go. Indian-Americans, for example, are the top earning demographic in USA. This is the result of Indian ethos. Africans in general and Ugandans in particular need to learn from the Indian example. Imagine if Africa could be one nation just like India is one nation. Africa would be one of the top 10 world economies by GDP and military might as well. Instead, Africans are busy resenting their colonial past, forgetting to live in the present. Even if Ugandans got their wish and all foreigners including Indians left, Uganda will still remain the same. This time it will be one black tribe fighting another. And these blame games will remain the same.
BTW, I don't mean everyone in Africa is like that, but many are. And they are the real reason for Africa's lack of progress (although some African nations have been doing rather good).

If you mean to ask how many Indians in Uganda hold dual citizenship of India and Uganda, the answer is zero, despite what this fake news report might make you believe.
If you mean to ask how many Black Ugandans hold Indian citizenship, the answer is: ask your own damn selves. Black Ugandans can get Indian citizenship by following proper procedure just as easily as White Westerners can. Indian law in this regard is the same, it doesn't depend on skin colour or race.

The same thing on a small scale happens in the hood. People not from there can easily get a business and get rich but dont keep the money or spend it there, or try to help the community, and they hire very few people from the community. Its sadly a parasitic relationship and anyone can see it. They just want to get rich from a community but don't want to give anything back even on the smalest scale.

Says who? You? There is a proper process by which you can get Indian citizenship. Many people do. Just get married to an Indian, live in India for 7 years and then you can apply for citizenship. After that, swear the oath to Mother India and just like that, you are now an Indian citizen.

But other forms of social cooperation is certainly possible between Ugandans and Indians. Unfortunately, intermarriage is extremely difficult. The huge cultural gap can't sustain such a marriage.

Why then make marrying an indian citizen a Condition to Citizenship if u well know that its culturally impossible to marry an indian Citizen.

    • @jamfold2956

@@ug.nationalistMarrying Indian is not a condition for citizenship. Living for a certain period of time and knowing one of the official languages is.
Also, having and sustaining an Indian wife is very very difficult for non-Indians. Are you willing to sacrifice your food habits, change your religious practices, face nuances of the caste system, too many rituals, buy too much gold for your wife, be okay with your kids following different religions and speaking different languages etc?
An Indian woman would not be okay marrying others unless she gets these liberties. Even in western world, mixed Indians almost always have Indian part as a dominant one. The US Vice President's mother was Indian, father was black. Now their 3rd generation kids including her nieces and their kids all have Indian Hindu names. Even my own ethnicity has some Portuguese great grandfathers. But our great grandmothers who married foreigners completely absorbed their husband's cultures and it vanished overtime. We hardly have any Portuguese and are fully Indian now. Are you willing to pay that price for having an Indian wife? Your own heritage will be lost among your descendents.

    indians were part and parcel aswel as beneficiaries of the Colonial Project in uganda......., When Colonisers were forced to leave Uganda, the White man instead, for his own benefit, handed Uganda's Resources i.e economy, Properties and Big Jobs to his indian friends of British Nationality/Passport hence compromising independence;
Recall; uganda by that time was more of a Socialist state as per Obote's "Common man's charter" with all resources owned by the Gov't..,
By this, independence was not complete as per the african Desires..., But a change of Guard.
After the Expulsion (Real independence), All those properties and those that were acquired by High Ranking Uganda government officials of indian/foreign origin as a result of Corruption and Embezzlement were supposed to be confiscated by govt as well, as it will be the case Now after Sevo rule..., No foreigner is Demanding Uganda Govt whatsoever in that regard......, All Those initial 10,000 properties(i.e All Properties & Factories in Ugandan Towns then) should be re-nationalised again including Busoga sugar factories as they were supposed to be handed over at independence Day.

You know what Uganda's problem is? Ugandans resent Indians. You lot kicked out Indians once before. Now only a few are still left. Now when Indian companies and Indian Nationals who have nothing to do with Uganda's history come to invest in Uganda, they get the same harsh treatment.
This hatred against even new Indian entrants into Uganda is illogical and while it is to no detriment of India if one puny nation with a GDP as small as some Indian cities decides to kick Indians out, the reverse is not true. If Uganda can't protect interests of foreign investors, it will receive no foreign investment and keep languishing at this same level forever.

That statement insinuates that Indians can hold Indian and Ugandan citizenship at the same time. But everyone knows that India does not allow dual citizenship, so in the eyes of the Indian government, you can either be a Ugandan citizen or an Indian citizen, not both.
