@hugorezende199 so you are saying they should have kept Derek and Jordan together, too? That's crazy. I guess anyone can have billion dollar ideas these days!
Did I expect Portnoy to play Mangini's part exactly? No Did I expect him to play it close to the original with his own flare? Yes I also expected at least 4 Mangini songs in this set. They honestly only played this song, because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song.
"because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song." You make it sound like Mike Portnoy is the "new guy" who needs to prove himself as a drummer. Are you out of your mind? Besides, this is an anniversary tour (at least this part) where preference is given to older songs, including those that they haven't performed for a long time. Also, since Mike is making set lists, they will be constantly changing and maybe you will still hear what you want.
@SokolRock I meant I want to hear how MP would interpret MMs parts and have him demonstrate to us why bringing him back wasn't a mistake. I am currently speculative when I didn't want to be. Night terror was the first step towards my speculation. Him not playing hardly anything from MM era is the second step. I'm genuinely hoping you are right, but my recollection of DT tours during MPs time was that they had at most 3 interchanging sets, with a core backbone that remains the same. I just want to hear like 3-4 more MM era songs to feel this is new DT and not Nostalgia-DT
@@drdandalf "and have him demonstrate to us why bringing him back wasn't a mistake" This, without any proofs, is clearly not a mistake for many reasons: 1. Mangini was obviously not a fan-favorite drummer, which is obvious from the pro/con ratio in the comments. 2. It's also obvious that DT has lost a lot with the departure of Mike Portnoy, not only in terms of drumming, but also in the quality of songwriting and production too. 3. Do you see how many comments there are under the audience recorded video of their first concert with Portnoy? If this was the first concert of the next tour with Mangini, then there would be no such hype and you know it. In fact, with Manjdini the band only gradually lost popularity. 4. Portnoy is one of the founders of Dream Theater and his signature sound has always been one of the most important elements of the band's identity. So for me, the very question of whether he is worthy of being accepted back is extremely ridiculous.
@SokolRock I did not say he has to prove himself to be "worthy of being accepted back". And although I too believe MPs way of playing the drums is more lively and enthusiastic than MMs style of playing, it is purely subjective to insinuate he was not a "fan-favorite", or that DT lost their quality in song writing or production. Just because a song isn't as catchy doesn't mean their songwriting diminished. Music production-wise, there is a lot of evidence on the contrary that it improved. Again, I want MPs return to be filled with euphoria, but right now... I feel it's just nostalgia-bait, and it didn't contribute anything substantially new and impactful. I want to hear MP completely dominate MM-era songs. I want new DT music that doesn't have to follow the same riffs, formulas and simplicity that was evidenced through BC&SL (the song Wither literally talks about this). Night Terror didn't really fulfill that. It sounded like another DT song, but with typical MP fills. I know MP can do better, and I know DT has way more up it's sleeves. I am trying to be hopeful, I really am.
@@drdandalf " it is purely subjective to insinuate he was not a "fan-favorite" As I said, you can just see how many people support Portnoy in the comments (and likes) and how many would like Mangini to stay. There are a lot more fans of Portnoy. "...or that DT lost their quality in song writing or production." It is impossible not to lose quality if one of the main co-composers, co-producer, backing singer and lyricist leaves and the band doesn't replace him with anyone (As Mangini himself said, he was just a drummer and there wasn't even talk that he would do something else in the band). "Again, I want MPs return to be filled with euphoria, but right now... I feel it's just nostalgia-bait" Again, this is an anniversary tour. It's not about something new, but about celebrating their legacy. By the way, do you know how many Mangini-era songs were played on their XXX anniversary 10 years ago, when they had already released two albums with him? Two. "Bridges in the Sky" and "Behind the Veil" - and they didn't change the setlist back then, it could only be shortened for some festivals. "I want to hear... I want new DT musiс...." I want, I want, I want... So what? What made you think that the band owed you something? If you don't like it, don't listen and don't go to concerts. What is the problem?
at this time you'll see the diff of two drummer. 1 song but with different version/style of drumming. and both version is great. they don't need to replicate each other parts note by note. use your own style or version. well in this version, what can i say? just wow..
Mike did a really good job here, proving the naysayers wrong. He nailed it extremely well. I'd have loved to hear more Mangini era songs (Bridges in the Sky, Outcry, The Enemy Inside to name a few), but he did a great job on both songs. Much love and respect to Mister Portnoy, and hats off to him.
Why do people want to split them into two separate bands? Both Mikes are part of Dream Theater. It’s not about respect or anything, They’re just playing their songs. No one says stuff like this about other bands. Does Trujilo plays Enter Sandman as a respect for Jason? No.
Yeah are people are like too invested or something. It's a DT show so it's pretty normal MP is gonna play some songs from MM area. Nothing unusual about it.
sekelas portnoy aja bingung maenin lagu ini.. ini bukan improvisasi atau gaya dia tp ini lebih ke cari aman aja.. pasti bentar lagi ada yang komen setiap drummer punya karakter dan ciri khas masing masing 😂
Exactly this I've been a drummer for most of my life, Portnoy was the reason I started playing, and ill be the first to say that Portnoy is NOT as good as Mangini on a technical level. That said, portnoy's playing style is (in my opinion) such an integral part of dream theater's sound, and portnoy's take on this song makes it sound like it could've been a portnoy era dream theater song easily. He absolutely killed it, and I'm GLAD he played it his own way.
It’s kinda obvious since the beginning lmfao. Not only they never held a pair of drum sticks in their life, they’re also clueless about the band catalog before Mangini joined the band. Mangini is such a nice guy and cool dude. I simply don’t like him in the band because his playing style is just too different. But if people say Tool fans are obnoxious, Mangini fans for some reason beat them as the champion 😀

Parece que eles evitaram as músicas da última turnê e tb músicas muito tocadas nas ultimas tunes , como A Nightmare to Remember and Count of Tuscany . Mas acredito que na turnê do disco novo eles √ão tocar mais músicas da era mangini.
one of my favorite songs from the Mangini era
4:41 J.Myung mistake?
Correct. He is still human...
Yup we all know that@@laler7687
Bless the band mates of DT for keeping Mangini paid. Rock on! \m/
Epic concert
MP is back! Fresh and full of energy. He needed a brake in 2010 and he made it. But now It looks like it’s time for LaBrie to take his pause in DT. Forever)) But there will be an absolutely another DT. 😂
Blimey, that was quick!
finally the drums can be heard in Dream Theater concerts again, after more than a decade, and they will be heard on recordings for sure, the drums sound is crystal clear finally again. Long live the King❤
Wait, is he the drummer from the Winery Dogs? Cool! He really fits Dream Theater well!
First Mangini song to be included
Fantástic!!!!!! Wonderful
wondering about the alien and the enemy inside with MP style, thx 4 uploading
Yes
yeah i'm not sure why so many people think he won't be able to play the alien. there's a few fills he might have to dumb down but the majority of it really is in portnoy's wheelhouse
@@Chest3rTheSquirrel Mangini "dumbed down" plenty of Portnoy stuff. It is what it is.
@@Chest3rTheSquirrel yeah I think The Alien isn't that complicated for portnoy, but yeah he need time to learn it
Im so happy now, finally i can sleep better
Let's be real guys, people won't shut up until Mike plays "the alien" and even then they will still nitpick..... never enough comes to mind
Portnoy can play and improvise anything! One of the greatest 🙌🙌
Mike is the greatest drummer 😊
Sounds so good....
Oh LaBrie, it hurts listening to you singing alive and not reaching the high notes anymore... although MP played Mangini's era song so damn well, not exactly as MM but it was played by MP very well ❤❤
Better alive than dead
Here's a billion dollar idea, they should have kept both MM and MP. 😮😮😮
Not really. More people to split payment
@hugorezende199 so you are saying they should have kept Derek and Jordan together, too? That's crazy. I guess anyone can have billion dollar ideas these days!
Did I expect Portnoy to play Mangini's part exactly? No
Did I expect him to play it close to the original with his own flare? Yes
I also expected at least 4 Mangini songs in this set. They honestly only played this song, because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song.
"because This Is The Life hardly counts as a drum song."
You make it sound like Mike Portnoy is the "new guy" who needs to prove himself as a drummer.
@@drdandalf "and have him demonstrate to us why bringing him back wasn't a mistake"
This, without any proofs, is clearly not a mistake for many reasons:
@@drdandalf " it is purely subjective to insinuate he was not a "fan-favorite"
As I said, you can just see how many people support Portnoy in the comments (and likes) and how many would like Mangini to stay. There are a lot more fans of Portnoy.
"...or that DT lost their quality in song writing or production."
It is impossible not to lose quality if one of the main co-composers, co-producer, backing singer and lyricist leaves and the band doesn't replace him with anyone (As Mangini himself said, he was just a drummer and there wasn't even talk that he would do something else in the band).
"Again, I want MPs return to be filled with euphoria, but right now... I feel it's just nostalgia-bait"
Again, this is an anniversary tour.
I want new DT musiс...."
I want, I want, I want... So what? What made you think that the band owed you something? If you don't like it, don't listen and don't go to concerts. What is the problem?
at this time you'll see the diff of two drummer.
1 song but with different version/style of drumming.
and both version is great.
they don't need to replicate each other parts note by note.
use your own style or version.
well in this version, what can i say? just wow..
I was not expecting this or This is the LIfe to be played or any Mangini erea songs. But hell, I'm glad they're playing some with Portnoy.
Same. I was at the show and was really surprised that they chose this is the life, and was so happy they played barstool warrior. Amazing show
I really liked how portnoy ended the solo with a unison attack togeter with Petrucci's little 4 note intro at 0:51
He does that a lot in other songs.
Respect MM🙏 MP🙏
Im in love with this version
can't wait he plays on the back of angels
Mike did a really good job here, proving the naysayers wrong. He nailed it extremely well. I'd have loved to hear more Mangini era songs (Bridges in the Sky, Outcry, The Enemy Inside to name a few), but he did a great job on both songs.
Much love and respect to Mister Portnoy, and hats off to him.
All the best critics of this planet in one video is priceless , stop being a bunch of clowns and enjoy a show you couldn’t even attend.
Mike Mangini 👍❤🙏
👍
Tp klo sebaliknya gini portnoy jd Kya ngeja...🤔
This remind me one song in album six degree inner of turbulence
Well done Mike. Well done.
Why do I get the feeling that the few people talking smack about Portnoy playing Mangini’s parts have never held a pair of drumsticks? 😂
Exactly this
I've been a drummer for most of my life, Portnoy was the reason I started playing, and ill be the first to say that Portnoy is NOT as good as Mangini on a technical level.
It's because you hate when someone tell the truth about your idol. Portnoy is not as Good as Mangini is.
It doesn't matter, go cry with your Idol too! 😂@@Jdmp09
@@Jdmp09 Naa, Portnoy's DNA is on all the classic DT records. Mangini is amazing in his own right. Portnoy is phenomenal as well. Two different drummers. Love Portnoy's feel on this track. And I loved Mangini's version as well.
Very surreal to see and hear Portnoy playing this song. I migjt fucking cry if I see this live wow.
I'm kinda waiting for his rendition of Pale Blue Dot, but this one is amazing too.
the 16th one handed notes not gonna happen hahaha, would takw too much time to play that solid, he will probably use two hands on a closed hihat.
