She may only pay herself a certain salary because you can't guarantee what you are going to make on a regular bases. Some months business slacks off. Then if you get hit like during the covid shutdowns, you still have to keep your business a float and take care of your employees, when you aren't making the money, not to mention utilities and taxes, food that may get tossed and have to be replenished when it isn't sold. Even with a long term businesses, things can happen to cause businesses to slow or equipment breakdowns.
I am confused about something? Is this a continuity error? The fact that she was able to hear them through the wall using a cup establishes that she has GOOD hearing but her daughter in law keep repeatedly explaining the situation to her and she seemed unable to hear that. Can we get some consistent continuity in these stories? The author of this story could not decide whether she would have good hearing (like at the start) or be nearly deaf (most of the rest of the story). Its like those old Superman movies where his powers and abilities kept changing. They cannot decided whether or not she is deaf.
The problem isn't the writing. The MIL character hears without comprehension. Just because someone listens in on your conversation or hears what you are saying doesn't mean they understand. The DIL tries to correct her, yes. It's not that she doesn't "hear" what the DIL is saying, considering it's over text. She just refuses to hear anything different from the narrative she made up in her head. Eavesdroppers rarely "hear" and understand the whole story. In the beginning, MIL literally says she heard the DIL telling her son that he needed to pay his debts, and she still came out thinking that the debt was the DIL's because her son being in debt didn't fit her narrative. 🙄🙄

Not as much as hubby because I had to back burner my career when the kids were little but I do quite well. She kept trying to get our babysitters to quit. She got rid of two of them and I almost lost my job. At the same time she was asking us for money! I make about 40% of our income. I finally pointed out to the idiot that if I wasn’t working we wouldn’t have a penny to give her. This went on for almost 25 years before my husband put his foot down and told her not to call us for money anymore. The last 4 years have been amazing!
