Dormant Rail Line Revived after 3 Years - Milford Industrial Track - 2021

- In 2018 CSX's last customer in Milford, MA closed up and the need for rail service to the town was no longer needed. CSX truncated their local service to Bellingham, MA to continue servicing BlueLinx and Garelick Farms, about 6 miles east of Milford. Despite not being used the owner, MBTA, continued to inspect the tracks with their geometry train a few times a year. This kept the line open for future use and didn't require major work to revive rail service when needed. While CSX was pulling out a Milford, the Grafton & Upton Railroad kept pushing to get their line to Milford restored. The last time the G&U had operated to Milford was in 1983 but that changed when their line restoration was completed in June of 2020. Soon after the G&U acquired the freight rights from CSX to serve the customers in Bellingham, MA. Service was revived by the G&U on 2/1/2021 and since then the G&U has provided reliable and frequent service. This video shows the revival of the line after three years including the occasional inspection train, first train to use the restored connection at Milford, as well as the reinstated freight service through Milford to Bellingham/Franklin, MA. An interactive map is linked below to give the viewer the exact location of the rail line.

It’s always great to see rail lines in use.
this is not far from where i live love seeing older lines coming back thnx
Well done, glad those lines are revived
Great video awesome job. My question is Do these freight trains have cabooses?
No
Now that .. that is what railroading is all about
congrats for line re instatement.
It was a shame rail lines disappeared so much. Trains can carry so much between cities. Passengers get a more interesting ride when they can see scenery. Have you ever seen an air liner dip down so passengers can see something on the ground?
Just had some fun comparing/following the map you supply with the GOOGLE MAPS sat view...interesting!
Glad you liked it!
Let’s make rail great again.
Absolutely all of the rail lines were abandoned in the 50's and 60's in favor of trucks, NOW they can't get drivers and the traffic moves at a snails pace
Its been in use for a few years.. GU uses that track every week, 2 customers. track gets inspected once a week
Been in use for one year now. I uploaded this just a few days after the one year anniversary of freight once again traveling along the route.
South Coast Rail, great video. There needs to be a second or third track, in case a textile company or furniture company , sets up business in town. Another thing to look at, Dormant Rail should buy more Switcher locomotives called SW 1500. I can see business, just pick up at full speed, and those switcher locomotives are working over time. Dormant Rail line needs to hire more personnel. That;s what make a great railroad. Personnel and equipment together.
This is so awesome to see 💪
Use to go swimming off that tressle there use to be an old cement company there back in the day
Is it normal or everyday practice for the GU to run 2 or 3 MP15's in "push-pull" configuration? Glad to see abandoned track back in service.
Quite normal, it’s not unheard of them doing it when they have to work Upton, and sometimes when they have to go to Bellingham and Franklin. They have shoved north coming from Bellingham and Franklin in the past but it doesn’t happen often
If you don’t have a runaround track then you have to have an engine on both ends which is comon on short lines….these 1100 engines are ideal for running in either direction…..these are mp’s which are equipped with a road/yard selector switch…..we had the 1170 & 1156 were i worked out of…
@@mshum538 I totally get why they do it, makes perfect sense. Just wondered if that was normal operating procedure.
What is a geometry train ?
9:52 What be the free space with the many lamps at left and right side?
Forge Park Train Station. It is actually noted in the video.
That's great news
Love the video, love even more the verbose explanation with links ! Three engines to move one box car ? What's up with that ?
The current operation requires a locomotive on each end of the train due to track arrangement. They also handled a long train that was dropped off in Upton and Hopedale before continuing to Milford.
Is that an equipment move?
nice
I live in Hopedale. I occasionally see a G&U train, but not too frequently. A while back, the MBTA ran a non-revenue train via the G&U. Did anyone get a video of it?

@@SouthCoastRailVideos Cool! I’m going to have to check that out!
So was it the coming of that new business and the fact that there is definitely some rail traffic that decided to make them reactivate that line?
The G&U wanted to expand to these two customers that were previously served by CSX. There were no new customers but by taking over they could increase traffic and run trains more frequently.
@@SouthCoastRailVideos good deal
An chance the T will extend service to Milford?
It’s been talked about for years, they have done studies on expanding to Milford, even Hopedale too. They’re just studies though so we’ll see within the next 10 - 20 years
They’ve been talking about that since the late 1980s. I’d love it, but I’ll believe it when I see it.
@@dcrailmedia8054 They were talking about doing it on the Franklin line; adding a station in Milford and Hopedale. I would love that so much. I feel like adding one in Upton would work too.
@@SilhouetteJudas to be honest it would be cool to see the T in Hopedale on the regular but with the tight curves NIMBYs and grades it would be very hard to see a proper commuter service
@@dcrailmedia8054 NIMBYism about passenger rail service has to be the dumbest thing ever. “You’re telling me I can take a train that’s located in my city/town to work everyday or see friends and go all over the state?? And that I don’t have to drive as much anymore?? How dare you even suggest that”
Thanks for sharing, I live a few miles from Bellingham Junction. Out of interest what do you use to get the timetable for trains on these lines? Would love to get some pictures/videos myself one of these days.
They run as needed
What does Garelick farms, ship in or out? powdered milk outbound.? What is that large facility on the southwest corner of Bellingham Junction (it doesn't have a label on Google maps)? That appears to be the only Bluelink distributor in Southeast, New England. With a 350,000 sq ft. building, seems like they would need a lot of spine cars.
You might be thinking of the BlueLinx facility on Maple St. in Bellingham. It used to be Georgia Pacific.
I think Garelick Farms receives plastic pellets to make milk bottles.
@@VictoryHighway I found the Blue link building. But I'm still curious what the large facility at Bellingham junction is?
@@VictoryHighway well, that would make sense.
@@kwlanco2714 it’s a power plant.
Why the wig-wag lights at the beginning? I thought that meant some kind of equipment failure(?)
I think they use them because they look kinda cool.
@@chickenwing111 Mike, you meaning the “ditch lites” on the bottom of the controller they are required on the leading end ( forward) for operation today for speeds over 20mph…..ms~~~
I wonder where they’re picking these cars up ? IBT?
CSX drops off cars for the G&U at North Grafton, MA
Those look like ex csx locomotives
They are.
@@VictoryHighway ok thanks
I see my truck
