  • I saw great duttar player Mr. Abdurehim Heyit at a small musical instruments shop in Kashgar. I met him by chance when I was traveling Kashgar. He is the most famous duttar player in Uyghur (Xinjiang). In this video, he seems to relax and enjoy playing the duttar in his hometown. He was very gentle, friendly person.

Amazing, reminds me a bit of music from where I come from, Turkey. It's so nice to listen to music from all different cultures and respect it for what it is, regardless of where you're from. Beautiful.

Hearing this reminds me of the smell in the markets of Kashgar, i can't really place it, but there was something special about being in that place, back at that time I was a kid with my family about 12 years ago, and the damage was already apparent. My parents were teachers and everyone they interacted with was Han Chinese [1000's of miles away from Beijing the actual China]. But leave the campus and it's all Uyghur's and other Turkic "minorities". The non-Han Chinese were very poor and living in increasingly squalid conditions - but they were the good thing about that region. Their food is still my favorite cuisine, their instruments are awesome, and the people are generally just good people. The only people who really gave us any trouble were, ironically, the Han Chinese who were coming to "modernize" or "centralize" the region. It has been a long time since I have returned but from what I've heard things have managed to get worse for the exact people this video celebrates. Sure, Kashgar is being "rebuilt into a modern city" because it's a world heritage site, and so they tore everything down and built a tourist-trap on the rubble. I guess my point is that this music is a dying art from a dying culture, which is sad because Xinjiang is by FAR my favorite place "in" China - if you could time travel 20 years back to when it still existed.

+Samuel Wallace That's part of the truth. If it's about the welfare of Uyghur people, then the focus should be on their autonomy. They should have the right to tradeoff between development and tradition. Neither "Han Chinese" like me nor international friend like you should force our imagination on them. It's just different forms of Orientalism.

Urumqi and Kashgar are being torn down and now some of the Uyghurs there are resorting to terrorism. I'm not the only person who's upset about this. The situation over there is getting more and more f###ed up on all sides; and I think mainland China should be more respectful of Xinjiang's inhabitants. Further than that, I don't know what the Uyghur and other "minority" population wants to do with their future, but I'm pretty sure they'd rather not have their land bulldozed - which is what's happening. At the current trajectory, the indigenous cultures of Xinjiang will be completely wiped out and replaced soon - That's what makes me sad.

+Samuel Wallace It's really sad. All the peoples that don't have a state to represent them are condemned to disappear, I guess that's wy some desesperate people chose the path of terrorism (fight or die?). There are unique and ancient cultures that are disapearing slowly. If nobody acts, we'll finish in a world with no difference between peoples, everyone eating fastfood, listening the same crap music (the same crap I hear everywhere), dress the same way and having the same belief (or no belief). We're losing the soul of mankind.
At the end, the entire world will be like Indian Reserve in america (some of them), with only few mexicans dressed like indians and doing the show for the tourists.

+Samuel Wallace actually lots of chinese cities have been bulldozed. there have been many old buildings/heritages gone. however this doesn't necessarily mean cultures are dying as there're national level heritage protection projects that preserve different cultures and buildings. In case of Xinjiang, uyghur population has grown significantly during past few decades and universities developed dedicated programs to encourage uyghur cultures and arts. national tv programs and festival celebrations all have uyghur performances around the country, that in turn encourage people study/learn and develop different ethnic cultural arts

Halig Hugh Well bear in mind, there are a lot of programs that are LOOK good on paper, to appease the non-local masses, but are a hollow ploy - at best. Last I heard they turned some Kashgar households into tourist-traps.
I don't know, what you're describing sounds great, and I really hope they are doing that FOR REAL. From my experience, I am extremely doubtful they pulled a 180, but I guess I don't know what I don't know.

The turkic people and other asian, tajiks, farsi and afghans have lived in central asia for a long time, the province called xingjian in chinese is called east turkestan in other central asian "books" or whatever, the meaning is that that was the most easter part where the ughur have lived.
There is some unrest there now, but it is the same as all non han majority provinces in china. The major being recent unrest where close to 200 people died.
Pm if you whant some more info, always glad
