This movie was aweful, didn't care about any of the characters one bit. Conner was a cartoonish villian, story had no clear point. Fell asleep 30 minutes in, didn't even bother to rewind, can see why this wasn't a theatrical release.
@paulreyes3972 I agree the movie was terrible, but considering Connor doesn’t get introduced until about 50 minutes in. Imma have to say you lied somewhere in your overview lol. You either fell asleep 30 minutes in, and you are just repeating what you’ve heard from reviews, or you’ve watched the whole movie and lied about the nap
i don't hate it. but conor mcgregor's acting is greatly detrimental to the overall experience. a lot of people are borrowing from tom cruise's portrayal of jack reacher lately
Agreed on McGregor. My dislike of him as a person aside, his performance just wasn't good in this. Your Tom Cruise Jack Reacher comparison in on point. This film definitely feels like those movies.
I totally agree with your review. Patrick Swayze, Sam Elliot and the original 1989 Road House is so iconic, so much fun, so over the top ... I think the idea of doing a remake would inevitably be a flop.
As ridiculous at the original is i acknowledge that its a cult classic so I was hesitant to watch the remake that no one asked for , but did only because I am a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan. And while the movie was silly from jump I still found it entertaining enough but as soon as Connor Mcgregor's character was introduced I literally stopped watching. He was so ridiculously cartoonish and over the top I couldnt stomach it anymore. Him and the Director who allowed that performance (a term I use loosely) should NEVER be allowed to work in hollywood ever again. I dont expect a wrestler to give an Oscar worthy performance..especially not in his debut film but THIS...was laughable to say the least
Finally watched Swayze's Roadhouse last Saturday. Love at first sight. You call it silly, I call it glorious. Lead actors and extras getting bloody and dirty throughout the film. Props being destroyed left and right. Physical buildings being violently leveled. The roadhouse itself going through a character arc, transforming from a degenerate infested blood bath every night to a mellow maintenanced bar. Swayze commands the respect of everyone who works under him. Going from a calm level headed philosophy major to a man pushed to his absolute rage filled limit. A romance that evolves flirtatiously slowly. And a villian who was a unique kind of asshole that build a town up to have the townspeople be indebted to him. Who pushes a patient man to become vengeful. In comparison the new film has many empty words in the script nor does it convey anything visually. The bar stays the same. Gyllenhaal's Dalton doesn't get tested(not like Swayze) he didn't get nearly as dirty nor bloody. Villians are just the same assholes we've seen in other modern films. The romance felt like: Girl: I openly critique you and think your an asshole to suddenly being flirtatious with no natural building block. Guy: indifference to being flirtatious to suddenly pushing back with no natural building block. To then have the guy and girl in the end not really sharing much time together that was something close to flirtatiously slow. Both flims are roughly 2 hours. You feel the runtime with the new one, but the classic, time goes by faster then swayzes kicks.
Saw this. It was serviceable. Aside from Gyllenhaal’s performance, nothing really stood out. This isn’t a bad movie. Not by any means. It just comes up short against the 1989 original. Thankfully, can still always watch that original.
Mediocre remake and it wouldn't be able to stand on it's own even if it weren't a remake. The movie is just not good. It has no sense of fun. Everything about it is just sort of bland.
The original Road House was intended to be a serious action film, but became kitsch because it's so bad, it's good. With just a simple Google search, you can find any number of movies of the same era that Road House was trying to be, but are completely forgettable because they had the unfortunate luck of being at least semi-competently made. The charm that we see in the original movie is purely coincidental, and contemporary reviews panned it almost universally, with Gene Siskel even literally saying he could only enjoy it as an unintentional parody. The new movie embraces that, but didn't go as far over the top because it doesn't have the benefit of hindsight, and has to actually be a well-made film. The difference between the two is nostalgia, because if this were called something else, you wouldn't have the same complaints.
Chris, Go Watch Road House 2 & Road House 2 is a 2006 American direct-to-video action film directed by Scott Ziehl. It is the sequel to 1989's Road House. Johnathon Schaech stars as a bouncer who must protect a Louisiana bar from criminals. Scott Weinberg of DVD Talk rated it 2.5/5 stars and called it a predictably "mindless, silly mess" that was made to capitalize on the first film's fandom.[1] In a review of both films, Cam Lindsay of Exclaim! wrote that it was better to ignore the sequel and simply rewatch the original instead.
I think the movie was solid. If you wanted some nuanced performances, I think one should look at a different project. I did laugh out loud several times. We got a smoldering Jake Gylenhall. A lot of great camera work during the fight scenes. I was entertained. I got everything I expected and that's what I wanted for my escapism.
Wasn't looking for nuanced performances. I was looking for fun and charismatic. Everyone came off flat to me and I couldn't understand what Connor McGregor was saying half the time. Glad you got some enjoyment out of it though. Have you seen the original 89 film?
I don’t have the attachment to the original Road House like other people so it might explain why I just thought this movie was alright. I was actually really enjoying the first half and I thought Jake Gyllenhaal was really good as Dalton, but some of the supporting characters were flat, the fights were a mixed bag, and Conor McGregor was over the top, but not in a good way, he’s just himself. I didn’t hate it as much as you did, but it was just serviceable. When Doug Liman was talking about how this should’ve went to theaters instead of streaming, after watching it I’m like, “It’s right where it belongs.” 😆
Yeah, Doug Liman's insistence that this was his best work and it needed to be in a theater was strange. There are several films of his that are definitely better than this. It very much belongs on streaming.
I watched the movie after listening to John Campea give it a glowing review. I had to go back and leave an irritable comment. Did we watch the same movie? 🤦🏾♀️
What you have to realize is that there is a certain type of person who is going to claim that any movie showcasing prominent black female characters with boys names, & large bodied women, is good. Their assessment is based on certain, "progressive" criteria over actual film quality.
Havent seen it yet. What i did see was horrible, but the action is enough for me to say hell with it. Now i gotta see the whole thing. I saw the final fight and it was garbage. The bad guy was fucking horrible. Why remake this film? Why? The original was great and bad. But way better than this garbage. Disrespectful to redo an already classic film.
I would give props to Jake Gyllenhaal having his own unique portrayal of Dalton. Very sorry for Chris not loving the movie, but I enjoyed Jake’s badassery and wisdom in the role. And lol Ben Gazzara’s smug villian expression is better than the new villian’s whiny peformance 1:31 Lol that cartoony villian laugh 😅
Ben Gazzara's smugness is so entertaining to watch. He just does these weird little things while chewing scenery. Oh, Jimmy the Henchman's laugh lives rent free in my head. That is one of the most iconic villain laughs of the 80s.
What badassery? You mean him asking permission before asking a simple question like a little girl and being treated like a child by two women throughout the movie? Yeah so badass
I freaking loved this movie. Yeah some villians are lame (especially Ben Brandt that guy is a joke) but it was intentional to show off there stupidity. Conor Mcgregor is funny cartoon character and I love him. Jake Gyllenhaal's character is such a loveable guy from the start all the way to the end when he is pushed to his limits.
Well I really liked the movie the action is solid a little bit over the top, but they stick to their tone and yes I felt the bad guys were cartoon characters. I think these film should have been put in theaters, respect your opinion though. Thanks for the content.
I'm glad you liked it. There are definitely a lot of people coming away enjoying it. I appreciate the kind words too. Have you seen the original 89 film?
Conor McGregor was absolutely horrible in this movie. Man, he was basically a cartoon. I personally think Amazon was in the right to have this movie go straight to streaming instead of theaters because Ricky Stanicky felt more like a theatrical release movie than this remake did.
The movie was smart, if not a little goofy until the 3rd act where it completely went off the rails. Almost like the writer got tired and wanted to go to bed so he just blew up a yacht.
I had to play this at x2 speed to try and get it to feel better for getting to the point faster, And to be honest it's still too slow at x2 speed. You talk so much and say so little.
It’s not that bad. Obviously not as good as the original. Some of you just gotta take shit to seriously and act like uptight douche bags and shit on everything.
I think you're being a little hyperbolic. I recently saw a new documentary series that's great and I'm loving X-Men 97s and a certain horror film that just came out.
Super cringe movie .....the two bouncers jake was there to look after at The Road House looked like little high school kids it was pathetic. Lol all around weak casting
This movie was aweful, didn't care about any of the characters one bit. Conner was a cartoonish villian, story had no clear point. Fell asleep 30 minutes in, didn't even bother to rewind, can see why this wasn't a theatrical release.
I fully agree with you. I would have been pissed if I paid money to see this in the theater.
Patrick Swayze turned down the role of Gabriel Cash in 'Tango & Cash' to star in 'Roadhouse'.
That's interesting! Tango & Cash is good. Haven't seen it in a while though.
Tango and Cash is a classic, glad he turned it down. Can’t see it any other way!
Good choice
@@chrisjherman It's fair.
WTF happened in the 2nd half of this film? He literally became a serial killer. Totally didn't see that one coming.
I don't know why more people aren't talking about this
The director made a big stink about this not getting a theatrical release...seems like the studio got it right
The studio was right. This has no business being in a theater.
i don't hate it. but conor mcgregor's acting is greatly detrimental to the overall experience. a lot of people are borrowing from tom cruise's portrayal of jack reacher lately

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the review. I'll be doing a Discord watch party for the film during the first week of April.
I'm really glad the writers didn't have Conor McGregor say "I used to **** guys like you in prison" like in the original movie.
We probably wouldn't be able to understand him any way if he did say it 😂
Why was MacGregor playing an S.O. leprechaun?
I have no idea! I know a lot of people were excited about him being in it, but he did not work in this movie at all.
As ridiculous at the original is i acknowledge that its a cult classic so I was hesitant to watch the remake that no one asked for , but did only because I am a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan. I watched it. It was mildly entertaining, but you're right, this movie has nothing on the original.
Thr original is just good, cheesy fun. It has so much personality. Thanks for warching!
Why couldn't we have gotten a late 90s reboot with Chris Farley as Dalton? I mean, c'mon.
😂
That could make a very funny comedy short!
@@chrisjherman As an SNL sketch, yeah, totally. But without the real Farley, it would be lame.
It would definitely top Beverley Hills Ninja. Never cared for that one.
He really just did another great job showing me that he’s ready for Batman.

Agreed, Southpaw is a much better film.
Mediocre remake and it wouldn't be able to stand on it's own even if it weren't a remake. The movie is just not good. It has no sense of fun. Everything about it is just sort of bland.
Yes, even without the connection to the 89 Roadhouse, it's just a very generic and poorly made action film.
