    I’m a car mechatronic technician, engineering technician and a certified repair technician for JLR. I used to work in an independent multibrand workshop and now i work at the JLR dealership
    I must say that I admire people that enjoy working on cars in their spare time and that theyre passionate about it.
    I cant imagine myself doing anything under the hood of any vehicle in my spare time. A few months ago, a light bulb went out on my own car and i simply wouldnt drive during nighttime instead of replacing it the same day. Thats how much I dont like cars and messing with them anymore.
    But what I do enjoy is watching your videos because you make it seem interesting. As a person with a lot of experience in car maintenance I must say that you dont do a lot of mistakes. None, basically. Good job, and keep doing what youre doing! If it makes you happy, dont ever quit.
    But dont make it your job. Hobbies are meant to stay hobbies for a reason. You might start to hate the very activity that used to excite you. Trust me.

    I do not know anything about this guys work history and I have seen nothing other than this one video, so I may be completely wrong - but it is made to look like such an easy job that it makes me believe he must have done about 100 of these chains and probably works at a BMW dealership or an independent garage that churns out chain swap jobs and nothing else :) Or he is just some guy that watched a bunch of videos and read all there is to read on the subject and did a good old college try and won :D
    Doing it with relatively basic tools just goes to show that most things are not that hard if you really want to do it. And that torque "wrench". OIh. My. Gods. :D
    In any case, well done!

    Well done! At least you didn’t make the mistake I did on a 3.0 TDI VW Touareg. I replaced the chains on it and put it all together, wouldn’t start. No RPM signal. After much digging, I found I had gotten some oil on the magnetic pickup wheel that goes on between the crank and flex plate. Very annoying and very dumb that thing can’t get anything on it without being destroyed.

    I don't know if you mentioned it, but how many kilometres was the car driven before changing the timing chains?
    I have a 2008 X3/E83, 20d/N47 177hp, with 220,000 km (as spare car!), and a 2011 X3/F25 30d/N57 190kW/258 hp, with 251,000 km.
    So there is some DIY work with both cars... one at a time... That's why I have two of them. One quite cheap to repair, and the other not that cheap to repair and maintain.

      If you don’t like cam chain issues, do oil changes every 15 000km. If you do strictly city driving not letting the car get up to temp (and staying there for a while!), then replace even sooner.

    • @thisissparta9
      @thisissparta9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      City driving modern diesels clogs up dpf, egr, intake ports and injector nozzles. Remember to do plenty of highway driving. Bear in mind that certain newer bmw petrol engines also have issues with timing chain (it's not exclusive to the diesels), such as N20. M47 engine itself is very reliable apart from swirl-flaps which should definitely be removed. N47 timing chain more prone to snap and should be done preventively around 200k mark, other than that it's a fairly reliable engine which easily drives to 350k.
