I owned a 72 510 Datsun 2 door for 11 years. Had a SSS L16 engine with a 200SX 5 speed. Lowered 2 inches with wide tires and Mini Lites. Enjoyed humbling Beemers and Porsches on back roads of the northwest. Easy to work on and FUN to drive. One of the best rides I ever had. Sorry I sold it.
When my son was 16 I bought him a 1969 510 2 door as his 1st car. He didn’t think much of it then until one day he stopped at a red light and a guy with a Ferrari asked him to roll down his window and complimented him on what a great car he had. He came home confused and it was history from there. We still have the car by the way.
I've owned a 68, 70, and two 72 510s, I still have one in my garage today. I've dreamed of the opportunity to drive the legendary #46 BRE 510, and I'm not too proud to admit I'm more than a little jealous of Alex. Being that he races IndyCar I respect his qualifications as a driver, but as a 510 freak, the massive gap in his experience with "classic race cars" makes this vid hard for me to watch. Had Alex known how to drive a car with semi trailing arm rear suspension, this would have been a very different experience for him. Through the travel of the 510's rear suspension, the tires shift camber (direction). This creates what is called "trail through steering" where the car literally steers from the rear wheels when the car rolls in cornering. This camber shift allows you to accelerate much early through a turn. Done right, the 510 will literally jump out of corners like a shot. This is what made it's handling legendary as Alex said, but unfortunately he didn't know how to tap into what makes this car great. The little old 510 still holds track records at Laguna Seca, Sonoma, and Willow Springs.
He is used to a car that gets lose when you look at the gas pedal...I want to drive one of these so bad and you're right you can sorta just be at full throttle the keep the car inside a turn with a little breaks to put the weight on the front and you can full speed through a corner almost
I owned 4 Datsun 510’s back in the 80’s and nothing I’ve ever owned or driven since gave me as much thrill to drive as the 510’s, and they were so easy to modify and work on to
My God....I miss my 510. Had one built with 40DCOE's (twin) with full race mods. This Datsun was the one that inspired me to build mine. If I can, I want to build one more before I die....LOVED that car. Have had Datsun's since 1970. 1200 fastback,B210,280Z,1600 roadster,Race built but street leagal510 and a Nissan Maxima.....
I remember watching the BRE 510's back before the highschoolzoic era. There was NO technology to speak of,just a good car & skill. My heart still aches for those days. And cars like these. Truly a driver's car!
There is nothing like a built L-series Datsun engine in a 510. I have a lowered 1971 with an L-20 B, U67 head, dogleg 5 speed and a welded differential. I am collecting vintage race parts to build an x-cross car. I had a 1970 510 back in the day and have never gotten over it. The local Datsun dealer raced a 510 and I had lots of opportunities to look it over.
Great job! A wild animal for sure. Owning my 510 has been a very romantic experience. Balance and connection to the road is what it does. Again thanks for making this video.
PROPS TO YOU, Alex Lloyd, for praising the car's simplicity. It is true that modern cars aid the driver, but on the other hand, you have to KNOW how to drive a raw, basic race car like the BRE 510. I'll take that over traction control, paddle shifters etc. all day long and this is a sweet little racer. Thank you for your honest review.
I remember these racing. I wanted one. Finally was able to get one. A ‘71 four door stock. So much fun to drive. I always marveled that a small boxy car could be such a good race car. Till I drove one.
My '72 510 was my favourite car, and it cornered so well that two different people at different times started preying going into a corner. It was a dream to throw around and never lose control but my L16 never got near the HP these babies got! 180-190 HP from an L16 is impressive to say the least. I'd still buy one today, but just for the track days since I don't drive cars on the road anymore...too many self indulgent cellphone addicts out there. That's why my bicycle has a camera and car horns on it with a 6000 lumen headlight and it's still risky. The wreckers near here has about 10 510 rear ends with axles as soon as you enter the gates for people building small race cars, good choice. That's why it was referred to as the Japanese Beamer. The main difference, mine cost $500 ready to drive with a Paddy Hopkirk Carerra drivers seat and a Momo 12" steering wheel worth what I paid for the car. (bit of a wrist breaker)
I had bought a 2 door, moved a month later, had to sell. Had a 74 pickup and a wagon. Quick rebuild and a Weber on the wagon made it fun to drive on dirt roads.
My favorit car.
510s were my favorite “Q Ships”. Looked like a generic boxy sedan but after boring the engine out to 1800cc, adding a Webber two barrel carb, and turbo flow header and muffler, they would scream! I once surprised a guy in a Camaro who had pulled into the right turn lane, planning to go straight. I played it cool until the light changed. When he tried to move left, he looked over and found me right along side him waving his at him! He had to slam on his brakes to avoid running into parked cars. Boy was he pissed!
Yep I had a 510 back in 76 it was a mess..500 bucks at the wreckers.. and I built it up to a 3/4 race cam with webbers and bigger brakes...discs on the back...(it was a 69 import) that car out handled everything on the road. I did put bigger sway bars on it and I was never scared to go into a corner without brakes before the other guy. I really wished I had raced it on a circuit...sooo much fun.
So many interesting insights from A.L. as to why these little cars were so competitive and why these little boxes look so appealing... in a word - balance.
Makes me feel old saying this but my first car along with all my mates were Datsun 1600's and Escorts. I really miss those days. We would build them up into nice little weapons and they were fantastic. Would love to get my hands on either one now but they are becoming very hard to find now! Good video!
I had a 1972 510 with four spoke American mags just like those, with Good Year rubber on it, I put 175,000 hard Miles on it before it sucked a valve. What a fun can to drive, with rear wheel Independent Drive.
the spider gears are welded so that there is no differential action. it was a common race mod done if a limited slip diff was not available for your car or too expensive for your budget.
Hey guys! Love your videos! I'm a big Honda enthusiast my suggestion would be to show just how truly remarkable the Honda motor is. I never knew until I drove my buddies Civic and it became imprinted in my brain forever and put a smile permanently on my face. Possibly showcase the Integra Type R or if you really wanna get nuts find a Civic hatch or CRX with its' motor in it and HANG ON!
You're welcome :D Personally I like all the Saturday Mechanic stuff the most. -Maybe a video explaining the differences and mechanics of lowering springs vs. adjustable sleeves+Springs vs. Full coil-overs. -Flushing oils for oil changes and if they're necessary? -Radar detector review and cool changes -How often to change manual/automatic transmission fluids and what kind of fluids to look for. Those are just the few off the top of my head.

510 was the best car for it's time! I never found one, though I had the quirky '67 411 4 door with the 1189cc engine and I got wheel chirp in 2nd AND 3rd. Had to fab a sway bar for it though. B210 and the F10 where also really fun cars. Had a friend who took his moms F10 rally racing all the time.
I auto-x a 510 in the late 70’s and it was a very competitive car with minimal prep. It remained street legal and was surprisingly tractable. My mom used it for grocery shopping since the gutted interior provided so much space. Sadly, it was stolen and intentionally destroyed by the vandals.
Top Japanese cars of all time 1970/71 Datsun 510, 1970 Datsun 240z,1978 Toyota land cruiser fj40, 1990 Honda civic si hatchback/fastback,1995 Honda civic si, 1976 Datsun king cab
Great video. C&D is coming out with some really awesome content that can easily rival the drivel coming out of Top Gear USA. Well done C&D....well done.
It would be interesting to know what this car actually has in it. BRE originally started with L16 but switched to the L18 which they modified to almost 2L. From the way he started it would seem it has an ultraclose race tranny in it which is not a stock 240Z although could be a real tall rear diff. I find it hard to believe it's not a lsd or locked rearend. But, oh that sound!
How did you make the motor How Did you make the motor go from 6000 - 8000 RPM to 10 000 11000 RMP ?? what do i need to do ? Or could you please point me in the right direction ?
Thanks for this. I wish Nissan would build it again, as some sort of affordable 1-series alternative. . . And I'm not gonna fault the guy for talking too much: he's a race car driver, not a show host. He's paid to give feedback, and does it well. I don't know too many young drivers who would know and respect the BRE history like this.
you are correct Sir found the info online after looking into it. but what is odd is all US models of 240 and 260 have to have the shifter hole enlarged at the back to make the 5 speed fit. Was there a US body and a euro/ japan body? thank you for your comment
great vid made me happy to see the old girl on the track. FYI there was never a 240z 5speed it was released in 1977 in the 280z had 3 of them and 2 of the 1978 280z 2+2. keep up the good work
The funny thing was, these were strictly Mom-get-groceries cars on the street. The "tuner" versions didn't turn up until years later, oddly enough. The shame is though that you have a very, very hard time finding one that hasn't been (to be honest) trashed over the years by enthusiastic but untutored hot rodders. This car was actually an answer to the BMW 1600, and it was a slap in the face to the Germans. It was every bit as good on the track (with BRE and others) and better on the street. Oh, and by the way: cheaper.
Did you ever turn off the wipers? (~6m in) Great video of one of my favourite cars, Thank-you. There is a "Datsun" doc available here on you tube that chronicles the '71 season and victory of the BRE team and John Morton...VERY highly recommended. (Against all Odds).
If it is still available I would suggest to give a review to R(auh)W(elt)B(egriff) and the Porsches they make. Like "Pandora One" "Artois Stella" or Spearmint Rhino.
ahh ok so the difference is the early 5speed (not having access to one in the states only have the 280z 5speed) and that is the one that needs mods to fit in the us 240 and 260, have done many of the retro fits as a tech working at Zcar Atlanta in my early days. one again thx for the reply
indeed, BUT i would guess you have quite a bit of footage without narration, i would reallt love to see (and not least hear) some more footage :-) thanks in advance.
TRUE STORY: I think it was 1975, I was 18 when my friend who had a Datsun truck and was a spectacular driver & mechanic stopped by my house to show me a special Datsun 510 2-door car he had been secretly working on for 3 months. Secret because 510s were a bit unknown at that time and he did not want his V8 friends making fun of him. He gutted the car, lowered it, had side draft holly carbs, daisy rims, flared fenders and made his own frt air-splitter. He took me up this local city road in LA, where it's straight and has a slight kink in the middle and continues straight. He said "get ready for the impossible"... He floored it and never let off the accelerator as we approached the kink doing about 80 mph and he just went around it like it was not there. !!!!..IT WAS INSANE LOVE..!!!! He always wanted to be a stunt driver and was always learning incredible crazy stunts like this one time he took me in his Datsun truck on a very rainy day and just put the pedal to the metal doing about 80 going down a straight road and said, Watch This! He spun the steering wheel to the right and the truck just went straight ahead! I was screaming for my life!!! When he said, "shut up we'll be fine", then let go of the steering wheel and the truck fished tailed a little bit and then continued going straight. He was really good.
Amo este carro, pero tengo una duda, por que dentro del vídeo en el minuto 8 se puede ver donde van los brazos de los limpiadores están en movimiento como si estuvieran trabajando?

5:38-5:55 brings me tears of joy, listening to that engine roar.
Same here, Alexis.

Michael Wells I believe they were Mikunis
I am truly happy to own a 510. Sadly many young people these days will never experience what it's like to drive a car that is fully mechanical.
Whoever disliked the video doesn't appreciate history.
I remember watching the BRE 510's back before the highschoolzoic era. There was NO technology to speak of,just a good car & skill. My heart still aches for those days. And cars like these. Truly a driver's car!
That SOHC 1800cc engine sound at high RPM is fantastic. I owned 6 of these before age 20. Yes, I loved them a lot.

get a LSD; the "welders" are twitchy
Ive owned a couple of fun 510 4 door sedans..... this video gives me goose bumps.
Great job! A wild animal for sure. Owning my 510 has been a very romantic experience. Balance and connection to the road is what it does. Again thanks for making this video.
That's one beautiful piece of racing history my friends! And the engine sounds!!! It's music to my ears!! Awesome
I still own 510 and love it every time when I drive; -) rebello engine with 44mm side draft screams like bat from hell.

Love the sound when floored, 190bhp at a weight of 1700... yes! Had one of this but a four door back in my college days early 80's😊.
I had bought a 2 door, moved a month later, had to sell. Had a 74 pickup and a wagon. Quick rebuild and a Weber on the wagon made it fun to drive on dirt roads.

Great Car... that was my favorite race car in the 1970's, for sure. Go BRE
Had a few of these myself back in the 1980s ....was in a 510 car club , raced them every week and pushed those cars to there max....very fun cars !!
this is the best road test ,since ken purdy''s writings!!! awesome job !
Makes me feel old saying this but my first car along with all my mates were Datsun 1600's and Escorts. I really miss those days. Just saw this car along with pete brock, truly a piece of history
Excellent video! The 510 is such a cool little car.

Wow! Datsun had the VTech sound 20 years before Honda lol! That thing sounds awesome!!
Simplicity at its best.

Those are just the few off the top of my head.
i remember these cars , they dominated the SCCA races of the 70's, paul neuman drone the BRE 240z
John Morton drove the champion bre 240z. Newman drove for datsun later on
ハコ車の元祖510。コーナーは、テールの滑り出しも滑らかで扱いやすい。ソレックスとタコ足で抜いて、楽しく、良く走りました。時間とお金があればまた、手に入れて乗りたい。ハコスカよりも好きです。
Love the sound of old school 4 cilinders , weber carbs reved hard down the track.
The chin spoiler is not there to create downforce. But it IS there to reduce front-end-lift from air building up under the nose of the car and to reduce drag by making it bypass the draggy open underside. Some performance cars have gone as far as to have aerodynamic belly pans underneath to deal with the latter.
we want to hear& see the 510 full lapps of in car views. Nobody never understood the full meaning of my 510 pulling 8200 rpms now they have a better idea. Wasnt near long enough.
There is no better sound than a twin Weber rally Datsun at full tilt in the forest in the middle of the night.
i’m starting to like these old school sedans… like this one, the c10 Skyline, the bmw e30 and the bmw e21
now nissan needs to make a new version of this car ,rear drive included not to mention the high revving engine to boot!
got serious tears in my eyes from that engine noise
Man that engine just made love to my ears
Man,* love* .*
Take off the sunglasses buddy. Awesome car, great vid. Cheers.
We had one of these in Jamaica. When it was sold in the 80s it was still in excellent condition.
I auto-x a 510 in the late 70’s and it was a very competitive car with minimal prep. It remained street legal and was surprisingly tractable. My mom used it for grocery shopping since the gutted interior provided so much space. Sadly, it was stolen and intentionally destroyed by the vandals.
Great video! That thing looks like a blast to drive! And the sound....!!!
Top Japanese cars of all time 1970/71 Datsun 510, 1970 Datsun 240z,1978 Toyota land cruiser fj40, 1990 Honda civic si hatchback/fastback,1995 Honda civic si, 1976 Datsun king cab
Car and Driver, thank you, thank you, thank you for using proper microphones.
theres nothing better than revving a 1000cc-1800cc motor past 10,000rpm, in a car made of sheet metal.
Great video with a classic race car
Great video. C&D is coming out with some really awesome content that can easily rival the drivel coming out of Top Gear USA. Well done C&D....well done.
Nice video, great job on describing the experience of driving a vintage race car
good video and im surprised they allowed u to drive it as hard as u did!
At 7:57 I think the wiper motors are running.
Alex is uninformed; the car would have a R180 (240Z) LSD in it.
havent ven watched this yet but i love this datsun so much i want one
that lil' motor noise rev. high, almost as high as the man's voice. the car is hot as hell.
510s are awesome!!!
I've actually cloned one of these , certified by Pete Brock as well (Bre )
How did you make the motor How Did you make the motor go from 6000 - 8000 RPM to 10 000 11000 RMP ?? what do i need to do ? Or could you please point me in the right direction ?
I had a chance at buying a BRE 510 a few months back, I regret not doing it, its probably one of the only ones in Europe.

Spolier alert!! a Yeah moment happens @ 5:39 as i listen..i smile. this is one of them 'Yeah' moments you feel it..then say it.
My dream car, after a gtr of that era

Really would have liked to see an actual lap at speed in this segment.
Such a great, historical car.
Look for the BRM V16 engine. 1.5L Supercharged V16. Sounds awesome.
There it is 09:38
I just saw the vid that the clip @ 0:21 came from... about how they beat Alfa Romeo.
I got a datson 510 wagon, double weber carbs, 5 speed out of a 280z rear end from a 350z best car ever so fun
Did you have to pound the trunk in to fit that diff in I heard you do
yup. i'm def. going to put a datsun 510 on my bucket list!
Great video. I always regret selling mine. Please nissan build us nissan fans another car similar to this to compete with the frs/brz.
Ayyy my native track!!
Did you ever turn off the wipers? (~6m in)
Great video of one of my favourite cars, Thank-you.
There is a "Datsun" doc available here on you tube that chronicles the '71 season and victory of the BRE team and John Morton...VERY highly recommended. (Against all Odds).
That engines valve train is capable of a lot more than 10k my friend
If it is still available I would suggest to give a review to R(auh)W(elt)B(egriff) and the Porsches they make. Like "Pandora One" "Artois Stella" or Spearmint Rhino.
Vintage Datsun BRE 510 race car is very good. I LIKE it.
7:35 on, going into turn 14 at Road America. I even remember that tree
This guy looks like Arnie in the original Terminator movie. Especially in the scene where he pokes his own eye out and then puts on the shades, lol.
ahh ok so the difference is the early 5speed (not having access to one in the states only have the 280z 5speed) and that is the one that needs mods to fit in the us 240 and 260, have done many of the retro fits as a tech working at Zcar Atlanta in my early days. one again thx for the reply
indeed, BUT i would guess you have quite a bit of footage without narration, i would reallt love to see (and not least hear) some more footage :-) thanks in advance.
TRUE STORY:
I think it was 1975, I was 18 when my friend who had a Datsun truck and was a spectacular driver & mechanic stopped by my house to show me a special Datsun 510 2-door car he had been secretly working on for 3 months.
As impressive as today's racing machines are, I wish there was still a real connection between the cars on the track and the cars in the showrooms.
Real cars for real men, real race cars for real race pilots.
At 8:00 min I noticed wipers aren't there but that doesn't stop you from turning them on.
"Against all odds..." He said the movie title! :P

Amo este carro, pero tengo una duda, por que dentro del vídeo en el minuto 8 se puede ver donde van los brazos de los limpiadores están en movimiento como si estuvieran trabajando?
