    Lance I'll give you a piece of advice on how to turn in the air so the hip becomes easy. As you roll up the face of the jump and start to lean into the turn, steer your bike slightly to the left. This will move your weight inboard and get the bike on a lean. As you get to the apex of your arc then turn the bars right and and the back end of the bike will come around.... and you will make the turn easily. The thing is you cannot turn in the air if your weight remains over the top of the bike. You have to get the bike outside of your body mass. You don't need to jerk on the bars either... subtle movements will do the trick and you'll be amazed at how good it feels.

    It's good to see an old guy jumping his bike. Hats off to you!!!!! I like to jump on my mountain bike a lot. Being 63 Its something I like doing
    But you need to tail-whip to get lined up. Well, you are only as good as you think you are. So be the best in your mind and you can do it. I watch your videos a lot. Keep it up! You got me inspired and I watched you practice all the time. Cheers!!

Regarding the skill level , kudos for having the cajones ( or is that stupidity? ) to give it a go with no backup from mates, you're well ahead of my skill level that's for sure . Fantastic work in having a go at the young lads air field. I have only played on the bottom bit of it . Hey it’s all about practice and as we get older we have more fear it’s not like when we are young we have no fear and no comment. If you hurt yourself it’s okay mum and dad will support me . But when we get older we have mortgage a wife etc to support. So we don’t want to hurt ourselves. I love all the camera angles etc you always do a fantastic job on filming . So looking forward to seeing you and everyone down in Christchurch putting out some more great content. Keep up the amazing videos Lance

    Props mate. I’m turning 52 November. Started riding again 3 months ago after quitting entirely in 2010. Already placed 2nd in my first DH race back (cat 2) and another the end of the month. Stoked to see blokes are age getting out there. Jumps freak me out for some reason though and it makes me pissed because the ole “I use to do this”. Can’t for the life of me stop dragging my brakes before the take off EVERYTIME. I’ll figure it out. But good to see you hitting it. I need to ride with you

    may need to practice some bunnyhops and and use a bit of hop off the lip to get a bit of extra height and length out of the jumps and for the hip kind of jump may practice some whips to turn for the next jump. this has helped me on some jumps but everyone is different, maybe Give it a go and see if it works for you

      I’m having the same problem (different jumps) I think it’s all in the boost, higher you can go in the air the more speed you get hitting down, been getting better results in really squashing and boosting each lip, I’ll be interested to see your solution

    Yeah that left line I also have trouble railing the right hander to get max speed. I'm dominant right foot forward and using pressure through my left to turn right at pace needs ALOT more practice. Just like passing a rugby ball off your favored hand. So its up to the individual if you want to put in the work in to get better at a certain skill. Or have just fun hitting the lines your good at. So many challenges in this sport and I love it!

    You're not rubbish. It's a skill that you haven't learned yet. bshallard's advice is pretty solid. One of the things I would suggest you do first is do small bar turns on the straight jumps. As you get more comfortable, turn your bars a bit more. You should notice that the action of turning your bars actually moves your weight around on the bike. This should help you out with getting a feel for changing directions in the air, and also should unlock some style too!

    When you're in Chch Lance try to find the time to ride some of the Port Hills tracks, not just the Adventure Park. Up Rapaki and east to Godley Head or up Rapaki and west to the Adventure Park.

  • @LandanBell27
    @LandanBell27 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I really recommend spending time learning to preload off lips and pop off the jumps. You'll see major growth in your riding and you'll find bigger jumps will be so much easier to clear. From what I've seen on video and real life you almost push through the lip which leads to you casing lots of the jumps. A good set of jumps to practice your popping is on the last 2 on how good. Try go slower than what you'd normally go and try pop of of the lips by pulling the bars more aggressively, basically doing a big bunny hop off of the lip until you can comfortably clear it. Keep going slower and slower so that you can go over the jumps with less speed but still be able to clear it. This will mean when you do bigger jumps you can go a lot further than you currently go. Apart from that great progression, I'd recommend right side line on airfield because that berm on the left seems to not be high enough so you can't carry a whole bunch of speed. If you want me to teach you how to pop off of lips let me know and I can meet you at woodhill to give you a lesson :)

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that. Have been working on the pop but it is a gradual process. I rely too much on speed rather than technique. Work until you can't get enough speed🙄

    • @marcelknop1
      @marcelknop1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bestdayevermtb2 Nice vid again Lance, I appreciate how you take us through how you progress. Gives me inspiration too. One thing that helped me a lot is learning to "stand up" at the lip. Loam Ranger has a great video about this that inspired me. Also I found that it helps to not lean back but keep centred relative to the horizontal. It also helps to concentrate on not pushing the front out as soon as you hit the lip. If you push that front out it basically absorbs your pop. Related to concentrating on not pushing that front out, I also visualise letting that front wheel arc up on the angle of the lip, not forward/horizontal. This helps me subconsciously keep ""pulling"" at the bars and that seems to help with the "POP". DISCLAIMER: I SUCK AT JUMPS AND AM LEARNING BUT I AM PROGRESSING. YOU JUMP MUCH BETTER THAN ME, PARTIALLY BECAUSE MY BALLS KEEP DISAPPEARING AT CRITICAL MOMENTS. FOLLOW MY ADVICE AT YOUR OWN RISK😜

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  ปีที่แล้ว

      @marcelknop1 I have seen the stand up in the jump video. It is very good. I guess change is difficult and slow. I don't want to try too bigger change and crash. Needs to feel natural and not forced.

    • @marcelknop1
      @marcelknop1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bestdayevermtb2 I know exactly what you mean. I also struggle with that change. I find that it is easier for me to concentrate on a particular technique on new features. If I do it on a trail that I know well already, that muscle memory I already have of each trail feature makes it more difficult and uncomfortable to try the change in technique. On a new feature its easier because I don't know what to expect. I then often have the eureka moment and the technique gets embedded in muscle memory and feels natural. I can then tentatively approach a known feature to use the new technique on. Slow at first then progressively faster to full speed once I get used to the feel of it.

Its a real pity there wasnt "some of the kids" there to at least give you some idea where its going wrong. Personally I find all the copy paste jump jump berm stuff _so_ boring. Singletrack with jibber-jabbering is all good 👍🏻 multiple cameras is a tough one, it makes your ride less enjoyable and gives you heaps more editing to do. I'd say the odd FOV shot on a feature is all that's really needed. Of course if you have a big group of people on a ride anything goes.

    • @ToddNZMTB
      @ToddNZMTB ปีที่แล้ว +1
