Baritone Ukulele Lesson - Chord Theory

  • theukulelesite.com - Aaron breaks down the CAGED method originated for the guitar by Bill Edwards in his books Fretboard Logic. Here we show it applied to the Baritone Ukulele lesson. Aaron called this a beginner lesson but I think it goes into the intermediate and even advanced side of theory. These ideas can be worked on for years. Enjoy!

    What a great lesson! Learning the chords in root position without the first finger is very helpful. Thanks so much.

    nicely presented, Aaron!
    but... the first time I remember the fretboard being organized using what we now call the CAGED system was in 1983 by florida guitar teacher Bill Edwards. That's a lot of years before the excellent roadmaps series appeared...Anyway, Bill wrote a book called "Fretboard Logic".... don't know if it's still available but it's worth trying to find... it covers chords and pentatonic scales in all 5 shapes...
    I enjoy watching you and Corey teach and make music.
    thanks,
    Mike

    Unlike other ukes the Baritone uke is tuned DGBE. Aaron is tuned and chording appropriately for the baritone. G on a baritone is a C on standard ukes. Chord shapes are the same but the key will be different. The heading does say that it is a Baritone Ukulele lesson. Thanks Aaron. Great video.

    I made my own baritone by replacing the nut on a first act guitar (student model) from walmart toy section with a bass guitar nut and drilling the bridge 2 holes one btween a+d and second hole b+g. The zero fret on fretboard made it simple. And it sounds like your uke. Removal of bridge plate was needed to drill but ive been a tech for 30+ yrs now im thinkin bout buildin one of the kits from stew-mac

    Okay, I love my concert Uku, but this video makes me want a baritone. I play guitar and wonder if a baritone Uku would be too similar to the guitar to bother. I think the challenge of learning the new chords would be fun enough to justify getting one. Research is in order to make the decision.

    Just wanted to note to all frustrated viewers trying to play along that he is about a half step out of tune. Question: are these the same fingerings as for a tenor ukulele and do the fingerings correspond musically to each other? like if I play one chord on my tenor then, using the same fingering on my baritone ukulele, would I get the same chord but lower? Is the only difference pitch?

  • @ShadamAran

    Baritone ukulele chords shapes are a fifth below standard uke tuning. I’ve yet to see any baritone tutorial that mentions this, rather just reteaches chord shapes from the ground up. It’s a painfully easy transition for anyone that knows their circle of fifths. Not knocking the ukulele at all, it’s my second instrument, but the fact that so many baritone videos fail to mention this is a testament to the type of people that pick up the ukulele, folks that know nothing about music whatsoever. It really is a great instrument to start with, as there are a few keys with fairly easy chords shapes, but a basic understanding of theory will do anyone a world of good. I challenge anyone learning ukulele to learn all their major and minor keys rather than just two or three. Don’t sell yourself short, put in the work to be the best you can be. I guarantee you will surprise yourself with what you are really capable of. Don’t be another cliche 4 chord strummer.

    Aaron, nice. A little bit past 'beginner' level but very good theory piece. Only one minor issue. If you teach 'E' as index finger first fret third string, middle finger second fret fourth string, anybody who moves on to a guitar is going to have to unlearn that 'E' chord. Ring finger second fret fourth string please . . .

    I'm a guitar player who borrowed a soprano uke from a friend and it's just too small for fingers. This baritone seams a breeze to learn if someone already plays guitar right? Is the Baritone the best choice for guitar players?

    • @SiegeDestroyer
      @SiegeDestroyer 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      LindieLee Like most instruments it is up to personal preference. The baritone is the most versatile of the uke. It is tuned to standard guitar so if you are still guitar orientated it is a good choice. However if you want to go full uke, I would recommend the Tenor as it is traditional uke tuning which means uke chords and is the second largest uke.

  • @NapierThompson
    @NapierThompson 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is all very interesting and great for beginners but one of us is out of tune and it isn't me. You are in tune relative to yourself ie you have the correct pitch difference between strings but you seem to be in a different key to me and to the chords you are naming... That is to say, the chords you are producing with those fingerings are not actually those chords you claim because your tuning is non-standard. Baritone tuning is most commonly D-g-b-e same as the highest 4 strings of the guitar or sometimes d-g-b-e with a high d. I believe you can get string sets that allow a baritone to be tuned to G-c-e-a or even g-c-e-a but not only is this uncommon but then your chord names would be wrong. I don't know what your tuned to but it's not D-g-b-e!! Perhaps the tutorial would be more helpful for people if you stated what your tuning was before you begin and/or used a standard tuning. As it stands, I think it may confuse beginners a great deal, especially those new to music.

      And THAT is why I always read the comments from previous viewers of a post. If I had sat down to this with my ukulele and tried to follow along, I'd have been confused at first, then frustrated. My first baritone ukulele is due to be delivered tomorrow, so I thought I'd get a head start and watch some instructional material today. LOL... At least I'll know starting out that to get the benefit from this one I'll have to tune down.

  • @marlenesassaman3612
    @marlenesassaman3612 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Transitioning from one shape to another needs to be done slower; it is difficult to determine which fingers are going where after you do the original demo of each chord. When you start moving down the fretboard I need an instructor to go a bit slower. Thanks, tho,,,,

      @@skeeveskeeve I did not mean it that way, honestly. Looking at it I can see how it sounded condescending and I'm sorry, it truly was not meant to be. For me personally, it was a very good video because most videos are too basic and if you are familiar with the concepts and have been playing for a long time he wasn't going too fast, that's all I meant. I shouldn't have said start with beginning videos, I have no idea how you play so I apologize for that. Like the other comments here suggest, it is not a beginner lesson.

      @@christygordon7660 I forgive you and retract my criticism. It's hard to find beginner videos that focused on specifically a baritone ukulele caged system. This is one of the few and it just moves a little more quickly than I would like it to move. This isn't my first time watching this video, I've come back to it a couple of times over the last two years. And I'm still left wanting just a little bit more.
