    I just bought a Nikon D3400 today! Recently I have been going through so tough times emotionally with family and relationships. Photography is something I always had an interests in but have never really dived in. Thank you for making these videos, it's getting my mind off things and helping me fall in love with photography! Thank you again and I hope to see more videos like this.

      Hello Kevin - thank you for the feedback and welcome to the world of DSLRs!:) I know what you mean - photography is a creative escape for me as well. NOTE - deep thought follows!:) - there is something about composing and creating an image that tells a story ... a story that is felt and expressed through an image ... an image that is captured in a fraction of time and frozen for reflection. That is a deep thought!:) Nonetheless, study the camera and thoroughly understand the modes (when and how to use them). This will open creative doors and become a healthy outlet ... you can do!:) Be patient and stay the course!:)

    I have spent the last few days learning my new D3400. I have been using the settings you recommend.
    After a lifetime with my camera set to auto I decided to go PSAM. I thought it best to focus on aperture and shutter speed. Yesterday I spent working on indoor shots using the A setting. I used the smaller 18-55 kit lets. My grandchildren had built gingerbread houses so I spent my time taking pictures of candy, frosting and gingerbread. That was fun. It isn't hard to take interesting photos.
    I spent today outdoors with the larger 70-300 kit lens set on S. Light varied as clouds came and went, and I changed focal lengths as I shot the same subject from 70 through 300. I noticed a few things I thought I might ask about. First, on a few occasions as I slowed the shutter speed toward 1/60 after a certain point the aperture increased. It was sort of like the optimum number was shutter 1/125 and aperture 4.3, if I lowered the shutter speed to 1/60 the aperture would increase to 5 or so. Is that what I should expect? Second, the color pallet would vary from focal length to focal length. It was a winter day and the clouds were coming and going. If the I moved from 70 to 200 or 300 the dominate brown pallet would give way to something shading blue. Can I assume that is normal?
    The first 500 shots have left me impressed. Most of my pictures were good. The initial learning curve isn't nearly as steep as I thought it would be, just a little common sense. Maybe the camera is good enough to protect a beginner from most of his screw ups.
    I really love your videos.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Ron - welcome to the channel and thank you for the feedback!:). Typically, if I am shooting something stationary (i.e. portraits (people posing, etc.), landscapes, fixed objects, etc.), I will leverage aperture priority. If I am shooting is low light situations or moving objects (i.e. people moving, etc.), I will leverage shutter priority to freeze motion. Regarding your observations of shooting shutter outside at 1/60 of second and seeing the aperture increase - yes, this is normal as the camera compensates for the available light to maintain proper exposure (remember, the camera controls the aperture in shutter priority). I would also ensure the ISO is set to something low when outdoors and relatively good light (something low being 100 or 200). If you set the manual ISO to 100 and enable auto ISO with a minimum shutter of 1/60, you should be in good shape IMO:). If you have not seen my video on PSAM, consider watching here: th-cam.com/video/KTneVSxv1qs/w-d-xo.html ... I discuss the ISO as well. Hopefully this helps!:)

      @@RealWorld I like the D3500 very much because it doesn't try to overwhelm me with features, and it seems very well made. However, one thing I don't like about it is that they took away the ability to use a remote. To remotely trigger the shutter, I have to use the Nikon app on my phone, which is a flaky experience.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhhhh yes!:) I recall the same when I got my hands of the D3500. Nikon also removed the function button from the side which was another sticking point for me. Nonetheless, the sensor is great along with image quality.

    Well done as usual. I look forward to the upcoming tutorials. I'll mention two things. In the movie setting menu, it might be a good idea to switch the "Movie Quality" from "Normal" to "High" if you want the very best results. Also, for those just beginning to edit their images, I'd recommend the free version (30 day trial that never expires!) of PhotoScape X Pro. It's RAW compatible and has many of the same features as Lightroom, is somewhat less complicated, and it's. . . free! The $30.00 PRO upgrade provides even more editing tools once you get the hang of it. Just do a Web search to find the download at the Windows store.

      Thanks for the post/feedback Rod!:) There is a time and place for smartphone photos but if you want to elevate your game, migrating to a DSLR or mirrorless is the next step. Smartphone photos are great from a convenience perspective but will never have the capabilities nor sensor size of dedicated cameras ... this is a physical limitation of the form factor which is to be expected. If/when you go down the dedicated camera path, take full advantage of what the dedicated camera offers by staying off the full Auto mode ... leverage the power of the camera and explore the creative possibilities ... this is what makes a dedicated camera shine in my opinion:).

      I bought my D3400 last Saturday. I have been reading the manual and watching the RealWorld videos. I went to a popular local spot on the river where the kayakers and surfers ride the early season standing waves. A number of very successful action shots using shutter speed priority semi-manual mode to shoot at high speed to freeze the subject. I'm delighted with the images. I have a ticket for the F1 Grand Prix de Monaco next month. Any video tips on how to get the best shots there, including blurs, would be greatly appreciated. ;-)

    Awesome video! We kinda stumbled into photography last summer when we bought a used Minolta X-700 for twenty bucks! And man it's so much fun to use and it's a FILM camera! We're thinking about buying the Nikon d3400 so that's why we're here! Thanks for the good info!!

Not certain if you caught my review video on the camera, but worth a quick watch if not - th-cam.com/video/cORINOaLSTk/w-d-xo.html ... best of luck and have fun!:)

    First of all, I like your review and the introduction of D3400, even though I don't speak English as my main, I can still almost full understand what you talk about, and your words make all the concepts much more comprehensive. Via the video you made, I can tell you really are a person who wants to make green hands, like me, to learn how to take photo, how to use the camera. I am a person who doesn't have enough money, but really wanna enjoy photography. That's why I chose D3400 as my first start. Anyway, I have subscribed your channel, thanks for your devotion to the photography field.

      Hello Mike - thank you for the feedback and welcome to the channel!:) If you are new to the DSLR world, the D3400 is a good camera to learn and grow. I know many people who purchase a nice camera and remain in fully auto. I've just completed viewing your vid's on Nikon D3400 Field Test and Review, as well as Got your first DSLR (Nikon D3400) and found them very interesting. I have been a DSLR user since the release of the Pentax K10d over a decade ago. I can't believe what I paid for my two K10d's in 2006 for 10megapix back then............to what I just paid for 24megapix now. Your vid's are very informative but I've logged onto them because I want to create video's for a winery. My D3400 comes with the P (silent Pulse motor focus) but regrettably I've found that even the subtle breezes in the vineyard create background noise. I am building a library of video's to send to our club members with regard to seasonal progression of ripening in the vineyard and I feel it is time to eliminate the unwanted background noises. Is there a way out of my problem without buying a better DSLR?

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Brad and thank you for the feedback/question:). Wow - interesting use of the D3400 (for a winery:))! I got a good laugh from your comment regarding what you paid for a K10d in 2006, because I know the feeling!:) Funny to think about how technology has improved and prices have dropped. What I find more interesting is the fact that we considered 6 or 8mp camera awesome and completely fine at the time:). This is one reason I do not push megapixels too much simply because I feel that I was able to do much with less. Nonetheless, the higher mp's allow for more cropping, detail, etc. which is always good:).
      Regarding background noise ... most DLSRs have terrible built-in mics (even the professional models (including the Canon 5D Mark IV which I recently tested/reviewed)). A mic-in is a much better option. This allows the user to attach a mini boom mic of some sort (i.e. Rode mic (similar to this: amzn.to/2hfANly)). Unfortunately, Nikon removed the mic-in port from the D3400 (they had it on the D3300). Nonetheless, I have always used an external mic called the Zoom H1 along with a cheap lavaliere/lapel mic (Zoom H1 found here: amzn.to/2gE6rZ8). The only challenge with using an external device for recording is syncing the sound which is not too difficult:). I created a video regarding the Zoom H1 that might be helpful ... th-cam.com/video/4StJ6QmYvpQ/w-d-xo.html

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Kathy - sorry for the trouble. RAW is the best format and the right choice. You can open/manage RAW files but will need to process them ... RAW means getting the best the camera has to offer:). I created a video on how to post process RAW files which can be found here: th-cam.com/video/tqd_Cnk-FBM/w-d-xo.html ... if you find this to be too much trouble and already have RAW images you would like to quickly convert, I suggest the following site: raw.pics.io/ ... going forward you can switch the format back to jpeg or to both RAW+jpeg which will save the image to two files (one RAW and the other jpeg). This would give you the opportunity to quick send/share a jpeg and take full advantage of RAW later. Hope this helps!:)

    Ooooo.. THAT is that metering actually does.. We were at an event (Star wars Identities) And the lighting was shockingly bad for taking any type of photo.. I am completely inexperienced with DSLRs (I used a Cannon 1100d kit from work) and tried to fiddle with the settings to get some decent photos and i got 'some' .. i should've put it into spot metering to ignore some of the backlight i guess and get better photos that way... i also think i wasn't at maximum aperture. Will probably get a decent f/1.8 prime lens a bit later for that kind of indoor/concert photography .. can't wait to get my D3400 :D

    • @RealWorld

    I own the Nikon D3400. In your review of the 50mm f1.8 lens, you don’t mention whether you’re using the D or G model. Can you tell me which 50mm lens you’re reviewing and if the G model works with the D3400? Thank you-and thank you for your programs.

    • @RealWorld
      @RealWorld  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the post/question Paul:). I use the G model and the reason is this ... the D model does not have an auto focus motor which means the camera body must have an auto focus motor. Both the Nikon D3000 and D5000 series lack an auto focus motor. You can still use the D model on a 3000 or 5000 series body but will not have AF:).

I will do my best to help with the up-coming how-to videos as I feel many people can benefit. Fully understanding ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed are key to any given image. I strongly believe in practice, practice, and practice:). It is important to understand how you would take photos under various conditions BEFORE the situation arises:).
