This song is pure McCartney genius. There are so many things going on here. The contributions from George on guitar were perfectly subtle. And George Martin's arrangement of horns and strings is classic fifth beatle timelessness.

@@Sun-ph6rh The only problem is the basic track for the song is guitar, piano and drums. Unless McCartney has 4 arms, which we know he doesn't, then it's impossible for him to be on drums. We did a McCartney marching band show in college (2002) that won us a ton of awards and this was our opening song. Our brass section was amazing that year and they had a ton of fun. Our flag girls had floppy sheepdog ears, fluffy leg warmers and tails that they could tear off at the end before the next song. McCartney is brilliant and such a crowd pleaser, he easily became my favorite Beatle (and musician in general) after dissecting his music just a little more closely. Thanks so much for posting this. I think what this shows is how stunning each part is in its own right. The piano basically carries the song, it's a wonderful piece of piano music in its own right and tricky to play. The orchestration is not over done with with very melodic counter parts. Why do sixties brass parts sound so friggin good? George's electric part was always going to be a toughie to add to what is basically an acoustic song, but it is done to the usual George perfection. Paul's vocal, enough said!

If anyone's still wondering who's the Fifth Beatle: just listen to George Martin's amazing brass arrangement in de the second half. The trumpet pealing a high F over the return of the verse, and the horn doing that stuff in the middle right underneath. It's very exciting. And this is all stuff that most people never heard originally, on their crummy sixties speakers.

    Martha, my dear
Though I spend my days in conversation, please
    Remember me
    Martha, my love
    Don't forget me
    Martha, my dear
Hold your head up, you silly girl
    Look what you've done
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you
    Silly girl
Take a good look around you
Take a good look, you're bound to see
That you and me were meant to be
    For each other
    Silly girl
Hold your hand out, you silly girl
    See what you've done
When you find yourself in the thick of it
Help yourself to a bit of what is all around you
    Silly girl
    Martha, my dear
You have always been my inspiration
    Please, be good to me
    Martha, my love
    Don't forget me

I'm 80% sure George played guitar here, because of the strumming and the fast chord changes

Honestly, I don't know what reading source these people say that all the Beatles played on this track, or worse, saying it was Paul who played the guitars.

On October 4th, 1968, Paul, Ringo and George Harrison entered Trident Studios in London at 4 pm to begin working on the song. The rhythm track was recorded first, the instrumentation being Paul on piano (track seven) and lead vocals (track five), with both George on electric guitar and Ringo on drums together on track six of the eight-track tape.

Are the vocals two separate vocal takes? Or one take doubled? I think its the former. But if so? Gad…to sing and match the timing and pitch ? )There is mo God. But there is McCartney.
