I have an Echo Show 8. I HATE it. Amazon advertises to me all the time. I am downgrading to the Echo Dot to get rid of the screen, which to be honest I don't use very much. I'm tired of seeing advertisements and annoying notifications to rate products I've ordered on Amazon. I'm going to give mom my Echo Show 8. She may like it more than the Show 5 shes has now.
Could NOT set the clock on my Gen 5 Echo Dot. Tried updating version, asking Alexa, Nothing it was set on Easter time I live in Pacific time?? I returned it, ordered a new one.
Nah I got one and I try the pause function for it and I taped it it doesn’t work at all I also hit it hard and I think I made it worse because the mute function doesn’t work anymore so everyone that thinks “hit it harder” I’ve already tried that
Useful things to ask alexa 1. Alexa whats my notifications? 2. Alexa whats the temperature outside? 3. Alexa tell me a joke 4. Alex play _blank_ song Alexa set a timer for _blank_ mins 5. You can ask Alexa to go into sassy mode. 6. If you have The Ring Camera doorbell and connect it to alexa she will say. Someones protected at your front door. Just for you to know Alexa will not listen all the time and you have to say it 2 times. Theres alot more to ask her so if you get it just ask some stuff. I don't know how to do this but.. Alexa will ask you polls of the day like whats your favorite food.
I don't mean to rain on your parade but I was so impressed with Echo Dot 5 that I had to respond here. The biggest feature is the smart home assistant feature which I feel was not mentioned properly when considering buying this product. It does everything! I am 66 and needed help turning on and off things because I have about twenty remotes and things got messy and confusing. So I turned to Kasa smart plugs for each device and outlet which are excellent and purchased the Echo Dot 5 so that I could to tell the assistant what to turn off and on. I was able to change her wake up name to Echo which was a huge plus. The other alternative was Amazon, and of course Alexa but for me the name Echo was perfect. I have it tell me the weather or if there are any Amazon deliveries scheduled, turn on the news, tell me a joke, play music, sing to me or just about anything you could ask. When I am waking up in bed, I tell Echo to make coffee, turns on the coffee pot for 8 minutes and then shuts it off automatically and say's "Your Coffee is Ready". I also have it remind me to take out the garbage every Saturday at 4pm. I also have it remind me on the fly. For instance I will say remind me in 5 minutes that I have a chore to do and she says it without programming it in. Although It is easy to set up routines in the settings on your Alexa App on your phone. Best fifty dollar investment ever.

But I have an Echo Show 8 and all it does is advertise to me on the screen as it cycles through products and weather notifications. It's annoying. I'm downgrading to the Dot to get rid of the screen from the Echo Show. I hate being excessively advertised to. I bought the thing, why advertise to me?!
