My German minority mother was born in Banja Luka in 1935 as part of the Donauschwaben, and as a child, she spoke Serbo-Croatian to the various family members, as some of the ethnic minority Germans married Serbian, others were Croat, but she had to flee, lost everything, became a child refugee, because the Partisans and Tito killed all the Germans just because they were Germans, ethnic German minority, in the area, and she and her family first fled to Austria and then, later, after the second world war was over, she and her family were re-settled in destroyed post-war Germany. During the Balkan wars, our relatives who still lived there were both Serbian and Croats, and could not phone each other, but could phone the family in Germany separately to stay in touch. Sretan uskr was always on the Easter cards, and all I remember about the Christmas cards was a happy new year was nova godina...Indjia
Before the separation, was there an attempt to use one language only? If so, which one did they want? In Spain, the dictatorship made it forbidden to use your family’s language. That’s why today people use them more. They were trying to erase differences by force, and people want to reclaim their culture.

I mean, yep, there are some minor differences. But it is also true that BHS can be learned and studied as one single language
