This song reflects Jerry in so many ways and is my favorite Garcia song... Saw him play it many times at The Stone in San Francisco. Best of times, makes me cry and gives me chills. Forever in my heart.
I cry every time I hear this. Oh my I love his voice and that sweet sweet guitar. Chills since I was little and exactly the same today at 65 years old. No other can compare
@@kimferguson9493 I just listened to the audiobook "Jerry on Jerry"--it's a bunch of interviews with him. He said there were some songs (and I am paraphrasing) that felt almost autobiographical and he sometimes felt Hunter really knew him. I can't remember how exactly he put it, but when he specifically mentioned Mission in the Rain he said he felt exposed when singing it (again paraphrasing, not quoting). It's also my favorite Jerry song.
This is just incredible. So happy i was in the room this Labor Day weekend of 1989. Bob & Rob opening. Garcia Band, GD, Stones back on the road first time in 8 years. I had no money and made a job seeing as much music as I could. Gone are the days. I’d trade all my tomorrows for indeed
And he’s makin’ it up all the way everytime. And that’s what is amazing. He is like walking on a tightrope and always making it on time. Not to mention how the Man plays with John and Melvin.
I remember doing this (walking in the Mission), and hearing this song in my head as I was going home tripping my brains out from the Stone. I also have some good stories about the Keystone in Palo Alpo(sic) too. I could hear Jerry play in all the different street noises. Thank you Jerry and the Jerry Garcia Band (especially the girls), Bill Graham, Berry Melton, Merle Sanders John Khan, John Cipollina, for all the priceless good times. Jerry shows were my favorites. It was church. One night I had to drive home and I was REALLY trippin. (Rose Crystal) I always could drive no problem on Acid. (I drove some OLD buses across the country tripping later on). I lived in Fremont at the time so I also had to drive over the Bay Bridge. I had this 68 Mercury Monterey (rare car today) big Tuna Boat, but it was a really fast Tuna boat. As soon as I was getting on the bridge it started to pour down, balls ass rain. It wasnt too bad on the bridge because the lights and all the colors I was seeing. After the suspension part, the rain was hitting the car like a wall of water. I couldn't stop, the show was still ringing in my head. My eyes were having a hard time focusing from the Acid and the buckets of water and the colors I was seeing, and I was starting to think that this might be it for moi, when I saw 2 little red brake lights. It was a bobtail heading my way and I latched on to the back of that motherfucker, and these lights took me all the way to Fremont. I poured the entire drive home until I got off the freeway. I remember Johnny Winter was at the show too, not playing, just watching. I this was probably the strongest Acid I ever got dosed with, and let me tell you, I was pro. I was sitting behind where he was and he literally looked like a skeleton to me, albino dude, and that white hair. Someone needs to hurry up and build a Time Machine.
I’m learning this too! I can play the whole thing except the second solo. Pretty tough song. I’ve heard people say that Jerry just noodles around the scale but actually trying to learn I realize there’s so much more going on and it all just adds to why I love Jerry so much.
Brings me back to a time when I had nothing but I had everything, I was free. They asked me to leave the mission in Downtown San Diego, highly addicted to cocaine and Tijuana, I believe that experience was necessary, I can also remember sleeping on the sidewalk and waking up in the morning with socks next to my sleeping bag, they said come out and bring us soup before bed at night, nostalgia is a feeling that I can’t explain it’s kind of overwhelming!I am embrace that experience , There’s nothing like just sidewalk surfing couch surfing and doing the next show. JGB was n is High vibrational N very welcoming,,,,Tears of joy
His guitar playing just is so crisp ..he uses chromatic and appegio scales like no one else.. Crescendo out the ass nobody can play like him...no gimmicks tapping the great board bullshit just clean sharp soloing
@@imissjg Not sure Jerry was ever "sober," as in no drugs or alcohol at all. But so far as we know, he stayed off the opiates from around 87-89, and what a difference in the music -- and his life expectancy, had he been able to stay with it.
@@obliviousdude9437 @obliviousdude well, clean from opiates IS what I call clean...as do most of people I know 😉...just saying. And there is an obvious change in the music. ...
I’m ready to give everything for anything I take... strikingly these words come back to now... I’m willing to give up any and all of my pre conceived notions for any sort of peace I take...way different than the old days...
As good as it gets, pure and simple. 89 looked great on Jerry and theses are some of the fondest memories I have of him. What a brilliant piece of music too. This really sums up what Garcia/Hunter could do.
I turn and walk away Then I come 'round again It looks as though tomorrow I'll do pretty much the same I must turn down your offer But I'd like to ask a break You know I'm ready to give everything For anything I take Someone called my name You know I turned around to see It was midnight in the mission And the bells were not for me Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain Ten years ago, I walked this street My dreams were riding tall Tonight I would be thankful Lord For any dream at all Some folks would be happy Just to have one dream come true But everything you gather Is just more that you can lose Someone called my name You know I turned around to see It was midnight in the mission And the bells were not for me Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain All the things I planned to do I only did half way Tomorrow will be Sunday Born of rainy Saturday There's some satisfaction In the San Francisco rain No matter what comes down The mission always looks the same Someone called my name You know I turned around to see It was midnight in the mission And the bells were not for me Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain Come again, walking along In the mission in the rain
I hope Jerry Loved and BELIEVED in Jesus and will go to Heaven... I hope Jesus lets Jerry play a song for HIM...!!!! While we are there... I never asked Jesus yet to but now I am... :) Love to You All... My Mission is with me... I am in tears. < My mission in the rain...
I doubt that Jerry believed in a white man in the sky... whose "Bible" had rules for servant (slave) ownership...ie Exodus 20 - 21... Hey... I'm sure Jerry's Bible was much simpler.... something like: Be Kind... Don't be a Cunt.... But what do I know... I didn't know Jerry personally...
Notice how, depending on the show, Jerry would play the solo flat, finger, combination picking. Some of his best stuff, in my estimation, was when he would work between the two. What a pro!
i hope gloria and jackie are well. love them. he played off kahn much like he played off brent. what a joy to watch. when jerome's happy, the whole world is happy.
Might be my fave song by anyone. I prefer the 76-82 versions, but it’s a masterpiece in any year. Wish GD woulda played it outside of a few times in 76, but thank god for JGB.
10 years ago I walked these mission streets and my dreams were most certainly out of touch. God bless you Jerry for summing it up so beautifully and with such meaning and heart.
It's all of you who keep Jerry's spirit alive. I love you all so much.

Exactly.
This song always chokes me up!
Was my buddies song at his funeral.
Chills and tears every time
6:24 A brilliant example of what made Garcia perhaps the most inventive guitarist of all time. He invented that shit man.
Yeah he busts that out of nowhere. Garcia style
Amen!
Power shredding! Powerfully psychedelic!
That’s Jerry man

Attentive, aware and awake! Love this version. Sobriety was why the late 80's and early 90's were so good. RIP Jerome!
Fucused yes. Sober? Well...it is wild how you get shown the light in the strangest of places. A perfect mission right here🙂❤️⭐️
He was sober during the years mentioned in the OG comment....92 saw him return to the demons that weighed on him so ...miss him so much

love the solos and the transitions between them and the harmonizing of them
Excellent version.
It sounds like standing on the moon to me . Both songs are so soulful and beautiful.
Enjoyed this show with an old soul... Jimmy M. and myself had a blast.. Thank you JGB!!
Just amazingly beautiful wow

it's raining in the mission right now...
AH crikey. That's beautiful
I was there. Peak period for JGB. Great version of one of his prettiest tunes.
I turn and walk away
Then I come 'round again
It looks as though tomorrow
I'll do pretty much the same
I must turn down your offer
But I'd like to ask a break
You know I'm ready to give everything
For anything I take
Someone called my name
You know I turned around to see
It was midnight in the mission
And the bells were not for me
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
Ten years ago, I walked this street
My dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord
For any dream at all
Some folks would be happy
Just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather
Is just more that you can lose
Someone called my name
You know I turned around to see
It was midnight in the mission
And the bells were not for me
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
All the things I planned to do
I only did half way
Tomorrow will be Sunday
Born of rainy Saturday
There's some satisfaction
In the San Francisco rain
No matter what comes down
The mission always looks the same
Someone called my name
You know I turned around to see
It was midnight in the mission
And the bells were not for me
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
Come again, walking along
In the mission in the rain
