- The first domestic railway line in Switzerland opened in 1847 and covered the route Zürich - Baden.
Since then, the expansive Zürich station complex has continuously developed over the past 180 years.
As the largest and busiest railway station in Switzerland, Zürich HB has 16 surface level terminus tracks and 10 underground tracks, 8 of which are on through lines to Oerlikon or Stadelhofen. The station is served by all types of SBB long distance trains, including loco-hauled formations, plus famous international express trains like the French TGV, German ICE, Italian Freccargento and Austrian Railjet. Night trains also run from Zürich to destinations around Europe, especially to the north and east.
The following footage from summer 2020 gives a snapshot of operations at Zürich HB and shows both the latest multiple units and classic locomotives such as the Re 420, Re 450 and Re 460 classes.

Das gegenwärtige Bahnhofsgebäude in Zürich wurde zwischen 1867 und 1871 vom Architekten Jakob Friedrich Wanner im Neo-Renaissance Stil erbaut. Die modernere Bahnsteighalle über den Gleisen wurde 1930 eröffnet. Der erste Untergrundbahnhof an der Museumsstrasse wurde 1989 eröffnet, die unterirdische Endstation der Sihltalbahn und Uetlibergbahn ein Jahr später 1990. Der neuste unterirdische Teil ist die Ost-West-Durchmesserlinie (DLM) des Bahnhofteils an der Löwenstrasse. Dieser wurde 2014 für den SBB Fern- und Nahverkehr freigegeben.
