sam levinson really saw everyone pointing out and criticizing the bad things about euphoria, and decided to make a show based on all those exact things that dragged euphoria down.

@@lesliexhale Yah well said. Euphoria is honestly a very confusing show that had many unnecessary things especially the first season. But I feel like everyone who's watched Euphoria can say that the second season had a more intriguing storyline and the actors 1000% ate their roles.
The difference between this show and Euphoria is that Zendaya can actually act and you can sometimes ignore the bad writing, the Weekend can’t act and it only exemplifies the bad writing
the fact that this show was already written by a woman and Abel/TheWeekend said that it had too much of a womens perspective, fired the director and chose Sam Levinson and cowrote it with him, it just feels like a self insert fanfiction of him, its crazy how good it could have been
Omg I was reading about that. It would’ve been more interesting as a female perspective. I feel like Jocelyn is a character written by a man and she has no real personality.

It wasn't written by a woman, Amy Semeitz was supposed to direct it, but I don't think she wrote it. I read it was Tesfaye's story from the start. There's a lot of hearsay going around anyway. I only hope that if it was THAT good and thought-provoking, it wouldn't have been scrapped. Guess we'll never know.
I Watch it to crack on it lol. The show is ridiculously bad. It’s basically a long soft porno with The Weeknd’s music on the background every 5 minutes.

Sam Levinson is just showing how damaged and broken he is by exploiting these young girls like Lily and "Cassie" on Euphoria. Sam Levinson is disgusting.
As much as I wanna agree, why would any actress agree to even deliver those lines? I think the female actors should take part of the blame too. But yeah, still equally disgusting.
@@thecensoredmuscle563 see, the thing is these kinds of people (because quite frankly this can happen with both sides and I've seen it happen) usually romantise it because they are (again usually, not all the time) so touch starved that they begin to think its actually ok, which is a whole other pile of unsolved mental problems that if it was physical it would be a practically a island made of garbage and doesn't help that usually in young adult books they put in stuff like rape and abuse but "make it seem just fine" which in turn makes those people who read them become desensitised to it I will never understand the people who think its ok if I'm honest

“Nudity” riders aren’t just there to protect the talent. They are also in place for co stars and crew. You just can’t get naked in front of people unless they give consent. “mental illness is sexy” yeah it’s cringe as a line of dialogue but its spot on in this day and age, people do romanticise the hell out of it, this show will just encourage that though.
I think that line is a great example of them becoming the thing they were supposed to satirize. I wish they had stuck with the OG director, I think it could have been a good dark satire
That’s kinda the point they say that metal illness is sexy then don’t do anything with it like? They literally do what they were telling us the audience not to do….like….
I feel like anyone who has uttered those words or thinks mental illness is sexy has never suffered from the indescribable anguish that is true mental illness
The Weeknd fighting trolls on twitter instead of actually addressing the justified criticism of the show, including beefing with a 16 year old. He’s just ruining his entire reputation tbh and has turned into such a loser. Hugely disappointing bc I was a big fan of his. The Epstein “joke” really pushed me over the edge.
He’s always been a phony, wearing a wig. I’ve never understood how he has so many hits, and the fact he doesn’t write his own songs, just make his pop hits feel even hollower. The show should be about him.
I find it funny that BOJACK HORSEMAN, a dark-ish animated comedy show, actual did better portraying the dark side of Hollywood than this show. Also the character Sarah-Lynn is more compelling and very tragic than the main female lead. Another far better example of the dark-side of the entertainment industry: OSHI NO KO

@@gosick442 I don’t know much about him, but I doubt he ACTED like a serial killer. You know, all creepy and weird. A cult leader wants to lure people in, not make them hide and call the police
EXACTLY!! Real life cult who try/succeed in killing people never act like it’s their goal. An example I recently read about was a Japanese cult(who’s name I forgot but if you look up some Japanese cults they will most likely show up.) The cult leader presented himself as other worldly and magical. He literally took a picture that looked like he could float in the air, and used it to gain followers. He claimed that he could help others reach that point as well, and it seemed pretty chill at first, probably because it started as a yoga club.(might not have been yoga, I might remember it wrong) He literally became a trusted instructor, and then slowly turned his students to his side. When he later started doing morally bad stuff, like performing dangerous human experiments, he framed it as the way to reach his level of divinity. If you survived, you were one step closer to being just like him, and if you didn’t, then you were never meant for such power. (According to the cult leader of course) of course, like any other cult, they also portrayed non-cultist as below the cult. Claiming they were less worth, and that when dooms day came, only the cult would survive. Cause you don’t just make it clear you want to hurt others, you easy people into believing hurting others is for the greater good. This cult was so good at it, they got some seriously smart scientists into the cult, and used them to start producing some really dangerous gas. They then used the gas on some of Tokyos trains, killing and hurting a lot of people. Especially cause one of the gas packages made it onto a station, and therefore hurt even more people then just those on the train. Obviously commuting theorisem means the police and the government start coming after you, and the cult leader was eventually caught. And now Japan is a lot more strict when it comes to keeping an eye on religions and cults. If you’re interested I recommend looking into it more yourself, because I can’t tell everything with all the facts in a single comment. But it’s super interesting on how cults function. And how a leader can manipulate people. Although you need a bit of a stomach. Some stuff that went on is seriously messed up, and not for the faint of heart.

Some actors and music artists are able to cross work with both professions. The Weeknd is an example of sticking with one career or profession throughout your life.

Sam Levinson have a history of use plot points to talk shit about people he doesn’t like and is well known how much he fought the guys enforcing the intimacy contracts in Euphoria. And like Ryan Murphy with Glee but on steroids.
im sure there are a few glimpses of it on the plot, the only good scenes like jocelyn calling for her dead mom, troye getting electrocuted and admitting to have resentment towards jocelyn, the table debate on how pain makes the best art. The og team was kicked cause they’re too focused on the “female experience” for The Weekend’s taste so that says all we need to know about what could have been.
18:53 If the show followed through with Amy Seimetz's original vision, I think it would have a lot more to say. Huge thanks to Mr. Sam Nepo Baby Levinson and Mr. Abel Weeknd for taking over, calling it too "female-centric" even though the *main character* is female, and redoing the whole thing until the project became the worst version of itself. At least everyone's coming together to clown on Abel Weeknd. Never should have let him cook.
they need to release Amy Seimetz's cut just for my mental health i need to know how much they ruined the original work but they probably wouldn't because they know that verson is better and they'll be more critisized for it
@@windyp0d i agree! Would love to see an actual woman’s perspective take on this , I really wish they’d give us more than 5 episodes 🫤 it felt so unfinished
Yes!! They had shot about 80% of the show when apparently The Weekend didn't like that it was "focusing on the 'female perspective'" and Levinson got in and they re-shoot most of it, turning it into a whole different show. I want to see the Amy Seimetz's cut!
Since they changed the point of view, and gave more importance to Tedros (The Weeknd), why didn't they also change the title of the series ? "The guru" or "Guru in Hollywood", instead of "The Idol" 😉. By the way, there are no clues about how Jocelyn is so famous and popular around the world ...
The comparison to twilight is ten times funnier when you consider the fact that Robert Pattinson hated Twilight and the Wkend was apparently super into all aspects of production like taking it over etc 🤣
These people really thought that Tedros and his rat tail would be the classic hot love interest. Also one of the director/producers (I'm not sure what role she had in development but it was major) was essentially fired for making the show have "a female perspective". Oh dear, a female perspective in a show with a main character who is a woman. Utterly tragic.
The woman who was fired was the original director. About 80% of the series was completed before The Weekend essentially fired her and replaced her with Sam Levinson.
Sam levingson probably has a lot of power and is just allowed to keep going and going without any pushback, like the nickelodeon foot fetish guy and the US gymnastics team doctor. We'll probably be getting a lot more content from this egotistical "man."
I find it unbelievably gross that they 100% took Jeannette McCurdy’s trauma and gave it to Jocelyn because “I’m Glad My Mom Died” was so well received. This show could’ve been so good and it’s literally got people who are in the music industry in it…but it’s just not. 😒
You can kinda tell the writers were going for a parody of Hollywood and what young women go through to become famous, but either Sam Levingson didn’t get that, or didn’t know how to execute it properly. Either way the product became what it was meant to poking fun at. The scene with the intimacy coordinator is made extra icky when you remember Sydney Sweeney had to put her foot down for season 2 of Euphoria and told Levingson she wasn’t taking her clothes off for no reason anymore, as his response seems to be “but women want to take their clothes off and intimacy coordinators are the issue!”
I vaguely remember Emilia Clarke kind of had to do the same thing for Game of Thrones and the internet kind of had a similar reaction that because she did it early on when she was unknown then they somehow figured she was making a big deal over nothing once she had the audacity to use her newfound leverage to stand up for herself.
This, and I honestly think it’s hypocritical how they want to critize the oversexualization of women in the industry while literally sexualizing a woman in the industry
I gotta say, it's kind of insane how terrible Tedros' character is, because I didn't see ANY girly make any video, or post, or whatever about him. Even, the ones who were making sad edits of Evan Peters' Jeffrey Dahmer are SILENT and If I was the Weeknd I'd feel the burn.
@@CuteAnimalVideos2580 that wasn't the point I was making. Plenty of people could love a character like Tedros no matter how toxic he is. Him being bad or toxic or an abuser could be compelling. But The Weeknd can't inject any charisma in his 'acting' and it makes the character look ridiculous.
The fact that this came out the same year as Oshi no Ko (covers the horrors of the idol industry and media in general in Japan) is so shocking to me. After it, even.
The part about her characters non-existing personality is so true, it really made me wonder who her fans even are and how she seems to be so popular?? Like what is there to like??
The biggest irony about this show is that it is supposed to show the dark side of the music industry and the exploitation of Joselyn, in other words how cruel is the management of pop stars but after watching episode 4, Joselyn management team (Chaim, Destiny, Leia) are the only characters that have good intentions and are actually likeable, even Joselyn is narcissistic sometimes.
Well since the director (a woman) was replaced because the show was too focused on "female perspective", I guess the new one (a man) didn't like the message so he changed 98% of the old script😒
Joss is more than a narc, she abused troye sivan(can't remember his character name sorry, LOL) and let leia get treated like shit. she lost all sympathy i had for her the past episodes.
It is showing the dark side of the industry you actually have to be in the music industry to understand everything that’s going on. Exploitation of women in music is only one aspect. They explored how labels treat their artists, how someone you can trust can turn into competition, the gatekeeping of some artists, how the media portrays stories, the cult like parties and violence that goes on. I don’t think this show is for everyone to understand it
Watching this show feels like being gaslit. One moment you can sorta see what they want to critize. The next you wonder why the characters are doing devil tango
Exactly this. I've been trying to find a way to explain this feeling. It's like you watch a horrible, tone deaf, shallow scene but you can immediately see how the showrunners would justify it as something with a deeper meaning that we, the audience, can't fathom. But it's really just all poorly written with little subtext or subtlety, that CAN be read into (in a way the writers probably never intended)
What I think is interesting is that the creator of euphoria had to deal with a young female blonde actor wanting less sex scenes in season two, and then he decides to write a show where there's a hot blonde young actor who's so badly wants to show her body. It's like a parody of real life except he's made it seem like the woman was the one who wanted it and not him.
I would have been fine with The Weekends character always coming across as a little creepy and weird, because too often bad men are portrayed as “cool” and it inspires other dudes to behave like him (examples: Patrick Bateman, Tyler Durden, and Derek Vinyard) but he at least needed to have enough charisma to charm Joselyn and his followers. Like look at Charles Manson, many people who met him found him off putting, but he still had enough charm to get people to kill for him. But The Weekend’s acting is so bad I can’t buy it even for a second!
I can maybe see where people think Durden is cool but I'd argue going the same route with Patrick Bateman and Derek Vinyard weren't paying attention to the movie even a little bit.
Honestly i think abel should just stick to music, he's good at it. I love his songs but idk about acting. Like i feel like he was made to be a singer. He's terrible at acting lol

And we all thought Riverdale was the bottom of the barrel💀This show is just an excuse for Sam Levinson to create his own fetishes and I can't believe HBO let him.

I know damn well that the scene with Joseline and whole the nudity thing is just Sam’s way to get a free out-of-jail card from people reasonably criticizing Euphoria for sexualizing high school teenage girls. I’m all for women using their bodies for whatever, it’s your body and you have the freedom to do what you want with it. But there is a line drawn when in regards to an underage person in terms of showing off their body, and it is so fucking funny seeing Sam trying to use the whole “Women show body cool” as an excuse for underage nudity and sex scenes.
Even if they're not underage, it's still not "empowering" at all y'all just say all this to go with the crowd. No matter how you look at it explict TV or sex work: you're STILL catering to men. Incredibly weird men and your livelihood depends on these men who merely see you as an object and would deny you abortion if you were sexually assaulted or any other rights. ight back all you want but it's the truth 🤷🏻♀️
Yup. It’s the same reason why grown men think it’s ok to sexualize underage girls because they “mature faster” but the moment you correlate this assumption to girls therefore being given all the authoritative positions over their male peers, foam comes out of their mouths in denial.
also it's so stupid how she thinks they're prohibiting her from showing her body or whatever, when in reality she can do whatever she wants as long as she lets them know in advance !!!! it's so simple
"Weird dude meets boring girl and we're supposed to think he's hot" you'd be surprised how much unfortunate success this trope has... I am literally friends with a girl who loves this trope (and much, much worse tropes).
This show sounds like the underwear versus bikini argument. True Lily Rose Depp is 24, and as an adult can take whatever role she wants, but as they do with all young female actresses, they put them in certain roles that objectify them until they hit that Hollywood wall and get discarded for the next crop of young actresses.
The show made the weekend songs corny for me 😭 I genuinely started to roll my eyes last episode when I heard another weekend song especially after watching the weekend act

"this show makes twilight look like a masterpiece" is my new favorite sentence. i can see sam levinson losing his shit if someone ever said this to him
The scene where Teddy Rose threatens the guy in the store with his soft Michael Jackson voice will never stop being funny to me and will always live rent-free in my mind.
“As far as I can make out, ‘edgy’ occurs when middle- brow, middle-aged profiteers are looking to suck the energy-not to mention spending money-out of the quote-unquote ‘youth culture’, so they come up with this fake concept of seeming to be dangerous when every move they make is the result of market research and a corporate master plan.” -Daria
HBO went from having some of the literal best shows ever made (Sopranos, Sex and the City, Succession, The Wire etc.,) to destroying themselves like Netflix but in another way! How fun. Also I’m so disappointed to see Hank Azaria and Dan Levy is in it :/
The whole “trauma vessel” thing is SOOO true, ESPECIALLY since it’s Sam 😭 I mean that was rues entire purpose in the show, to be an over exaggeration of his experience w/ drug use and such. I think it makes for such a boring, predictable, and frankly unlikable show when done wrong, and Sam Levison continues to do it wrong EVERY TIME!! But one thing about him, he will never fail to consistently make shitty directive decisions. I mean as soon as I saw the opening shot of the show and the photo shoot scene in ep1 I thought the repetitive unnecessary nudity was verry on brand for him 💀 like honestly, if I got to ask him one thing, I would ask what’s his thing with putting young actresses topless in a scene that COMPLETELY DOES NOT CALL FOR IT 😭😭
Bro fr like even in Euphoria, I've seen all the girls naked except for Rue 💀💀 but honestly this is WAY WORSE than Euphoria. At least Zendaya ate her role and left no crumbs
Sam Levinson known to cast and humiliate women that look like his mom. Heard this in the comments of another video reviewing idol. I searched up pictures, Diana Rhodes (his mom, often pictured with his dad at red carpets or events), Sydney Sweeney, Lily Depp. These 2 actresses, even down to their facial shapes, have a lot of similarities to his mother's appearance. Disgusting.
As someone studying acting and who has done some intimacy training you are 100% right in calling out that intimacy coordinator scene... That is... Yikes. Especially given the show enjoys exploiting and fetishising abuse and trauma (including sexual abuse). I mean, talk about being tone deaf. It's also hilariously ironic considering they would've had an intimacy coordinator for much of the filming of the show.
6:17 i honestly think it’s trash the way they want to excuse the sexualization of women by the “my body, my choice” narrative when it has nothing to do with the situation in the show and it’s only being used to show nudity with an empowerment excuse or some shit that has nothing empowering about it, it’s just contributing to the problem.
I think we all owe Edward Cullen, Christian Grey, and Massimo from 369 days an apology. Like they don’t deserve the amount of slander. The Weekends crusty ass creep of a character deserves The Hague.

I agree. That is extra disturbing even within the context of this s**t show!
Wtf is going on at hbo? Does Sam Levingson have blackmail on everyone or something?
@@MagicCardboardBox just a perv honestly
Who on the set was out there thinking rat tail ponytails are cute? They need help.
That's a great book. I couldn't get through one episode of this.
I Wonder What Jenette Thinks Of This..
Jesus christ Jennete doesn't fucking OWN the disorder or having abusive parents wtf is up with you people
I also saw theories on TikTok that the Idol is based off of Selena Gomez
I have a friend who thinks everything The Weeknd did in this show is sexy 😭
You know it's bad when a movie makes us look at Edward Cullen from Twilight and go "perhaps we judged you a little too harshly"
Eddie Cull was a saint compared to whatever Tedros, Hardin and Gray got goin' on frfr
What a brilliant way to summarize a whole show: "The writing, the acting, the themes, like everything about this show is mid to stupid"
💯💯💯 🤣🤣🤣
Is it supposed to be a comedy?
@@DebNKY I don't see any comedy in this show just bad writing and acting
Heck, Nathan from Euphoria got a handful of thirst edits too. He's a problematic character from a show Sam Levinson has creative control over too.
@@lactosened9178 Honestly as terrible as Nate is, he is pretty fascinating, mostly because Elordi IS a good actor and he can pull it off.
Because Dahmer is a real person
@@CuteAnimalVideos2580 that wasn't the point I was making. Plenty of people could love a character like Tedros no matter how toxic he is. Him being bad or toxic or an abuser could be compelling. But The Weeknd can't inject any charisma in his 'acting' and it makes the character look ridiculous.
true😂😂
The fact that this came out the same year as Oshi no Ko (covers the horrors of the idol industry and media in general in Japan) is so shocking to me. After it, even.
That show is a masterpiece compared to this
Exactly my words👌🏻
yeah everyone should just go watch Oshi no Ko instead of whatever the heck this is
(Hits The Idol a few times)
Yep. Just as I thought. Tone deaf
I actually watched an episode of oshi no ko and it was really interesting. And 10000000x better than this, by all accounts.
The part about her characters non-existing personality is so true, it really made me wonder who her fans even are and how she seems to be so popular?? Like what is there to like??
She's pretty, that's probably why
@@milkyway4827 Yep, 80% of popular people are just extremely attractive and that's about it
Wait, who are we talking about
The biggest irony about this show is that it is supposed to show the dark side of the music industry and the exploitation of Joselyn,
in other words how cruel is the management of pop stars but after watching episode 4, Joselyn management team (Chaim, Destiny, Leia) are the only characters that have good intentions and are actually likeable, even Joselyn is narcissistic sometimes.
@@lead6186 Agree! I tried so hard to get along with Joselyn but even with her trauma she has no right to be an a*shole to everyone
I don’t think this show is for everyone to understand it
@@UncleT525 okay sam levinson.
I would've NEVER expected Alex Meyers to review this show 😭
Ikr but he killed it
Same, I was so surprised when I saw it and then immediately had to drop everything to watch 😂
And that rat tail, Oh my gosh... It is hideous
My thoughts exactly! Abel just doesn't have the suave or charisma to pull off this role.
Same !
They could have just had Jared Leto play himself
As tedros I mean. 😂
He’s that bad?
That's what I thought too!!! Like he would've been perfect for this
@@Reese493I don't know, considering Letos reputation to go method in the dumbest and most annoying ways to everyone around him possible and him already having a cult, just seems a recipe for disaster.
@@blendedcircuit479 even if he doesn't have a cult, do we really want to encourage him?
I saw a trailer for this show, and I thought it was some stylized thriller about a young pop star getting sucked into a cult for celebrities. Boy, I was way off. 😳 I had a much more interesting plot in my head than what we ended up getting.
SAME!!!! I too was waaaay off! I thought it was going to be parallel to pop stars careers like Britney Spears or stars like Anna Nicole…which in way it does seem parallel to their lives but this show…whew took a really dark turn & twist…disturbing and so cringe @ the same time!
they honestly couldve gone for some deep emotional type of stuff about fame and hollywood, sky is the limit and already in the weeknd's music such as in "after hours" his lyrics do touch some of this. but nah, the weeknd's yes men and that sam guy made it weird
I was thinking the same thing, and I THINK that was the original writer/directors vision, and there's some hints of that, but then the weeknd and euphoria guy took over and ruined it. Which is a real shame, because there's a lot of potential there
Big props to Alex. The stuff he goes through for our sake is impressive
I like that Alex's commentary dug deeper than normal, considering the audience for this show is older. Really would like to hear his real criticisms more often!
Agreed 1000000%
I firmly believe that if Amy Seimetz would have been allowed to do her vision the show would have been good
I honestly forgot she was part of the project with how much the weekend and sam Levinson get talked about
@@Bisexualdragon4042it’s sad, they literally filmed six episodes with her as the director before sam; and then scrapped it.
@@YelloHoesthose episodes should be released as an apology for whatever this show was supposed to be

Euphoria is doody and in ten years we'll be asking "remember when we all thought that bad show was good? Wasn't it weird how much the show sexualized high school age characters?"
It deppendss how you view it, if you view it as a teen show, by teens for teens, then it is GOLD, but if you view it as an adult and just a smidgen think you wanna bang one or more of the Characters, then theres when we have problem 😅
Euphoria is a pedo's dream. It's a bunch of children wearing lingerie and having sex
I already say that. And drug use. Like just because it can and does happen to teens doesn’t mean we should make it look sexy and edgy for them
@@megteg not defending euphoria its trash but have you seen the show? how do you watch episode 5 in season 2 and think yess I want to end up like rue....The shows handle's rues addiction pretty well and does NOT romanticize it...There is also that scene of 3 seconds of nothing that further proves that it doesn't romanticize it, no teen watches rue OD and have such raw realistic fights with her family and thinks yeah im doing drugs, it was quite the OPPOSITE OF THAT WHEN IT WAS AIRING. It never condones drugs but rather the opposite say wtv u want abt euphoria but it does not romanticize drugs...It shows both the good and the bad
I feel like the first season was actually good and then it just went off the rails
the fact that we have underrated, underappreciated, absolutely stunning Indie directors, actors, animators, artists, writers, and photographers
while the mainstream media is being flooded by stuff like this who mind you take hundreds of millions of dollars just to make in this day and age is just... abysmal

Thank you Alex for putting yourself through this so we dont have to.
I think what make the show even crazier is that the original writer wanted a story to show the real struggle of being a pop star and Sam and the weeknd was like forgot that let’s make it sexy and raunchy
Made it into a rapist's fantasy
And we all thought Riverdale was the bottom of the barrel💀This show is just an excuse for Sam Levinson to create his own fetishes and I can't believe HBO let him.
*This isn't the weeknd, it's Monday morning*
Shows like this make me really appreciate well written shows that involve trauma like sex education. Like they built stable characters who were affected and developed trauma and you see how they change. That’s how you write trauma and social commentary

Yeah he's trying hard to manipulate people into normalising it pretending like people are just a bunch of apes
@@martas277THIS! Thank you!
also it's so stupid how she thinks they're prohibiting her from showing her body or whatever, when in reality she can do whatever she wants as long as she lets them know in advance !!!! it's so simple
